San Francisco's seventh different coordinator in as many years is Jimmy Raye, last seen coaching the Jets tight ends. And this time the transition is reportedly going smoothly.
Practices under Mike Martz last offseason were notoriously poor. The team's quarterbacks struggled to adapt to a complicated scheme.
Under Raye's meat and potatoes approach, both Alex Smith and Shaun Hill have reportedly looked better than they ever have on the practice field.
Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat says only one transition has possibly gone as smoothly as this one: when Jim Hostler took over in 2007.
The 49ers finished dead last in offense that season.
It remains to be seen if the improved practices translate on the field. For all the criticism Martz took, San Francisco's passing game dramatically improved under his watch.
Yup, and Jon Kitna had great yardage also. Unfortunately these guys are trying to win their fantasy league. Where is Mad Martz now?
Are you Jimmy Raye?
Who wants to know?
Jimmy Ray sucks as an oC. For all the criticism that Martz takes (more for his surly attitude than his job performance), he's undeniably good, particularly with passing games. he needs a strong HC to remind him to run the football, and his approach to QB's is overwhelming, but you can't argue with the explosiveness he brings to the passing game. His 49er offense with JT O'Sullivan of all people at the helm, actually looked competent. He just made too many critical mistakes, which was why they improved with Hill starting the latter part of the season.
I think people forget how terrible the 49ers offense was before he came there and just how horrible the Lions offense was after he was fired (0-16 anybody, lol. Talk about making chicken salad out of chicken shit.
Hostler kept the same playbook as Turner, that's why it went smoothly.
Hostler was a horrible OC that did not know how to call a game. The offense improved that year when Ted Tollner joined to basically take over the OC position.
Raye has never had a good QB, and while the Niners QB situation is certainly debatable, Hill is an above-average QB with sub-par arm strength.
The Niners roster is greatly improved from previous years, and because they are in a weak division, they have a shot at the playoffs.
"For all the criticism Martz took, San Francisco's passing game dramatically improved under his watch."
For all the praise Martz gets, he also called many stupid plays that negatively affected games, and, as always, his offense=sacks.
Jimmy Raye is a good coach and an outstanding person. Otherwise, guys like Tony Dungy wouldn't travel to Fayetteville, NC for Jimmy's annual youth clinic and foundation banquet.
We'll have to wait and see whether he succeeds in installing a winning plan that the players execute; I hope he does well and I think the offense is in good hands.
yeah but does jimmy let dungy mentor his kids? i dont think the saint is good at that.
every time a team changes coordinators the same story comes out. how much better they look. How his philosophy is better. When they still cant move the football with one of the best backs in the league this sentiment will change
