McGinest To The Jets?

Maybe we should have considered more carefully the whole “launch our NBC partnership on July 1" strategy.

The problem is that, at a time when we’re ready to rip it up like Randy Moss in his rookie year, we’re forced to be mellower than Randy Moss during a blue moon.

So we’ve been scouring and re-scouring the Internet more closely than usual for anything that can be fashioned into a PFT-on-NBC blurb.

Here’s one that we found while perusing the Twitter page of our pal Adam Schefter.

Schefter posted on Thursday, after news broke that Jets linebacker Calvin Pace will miss the first four games of the 2009 season for unintentionally cheating, that the Jets might be interested in adding linebacker Willie McGinest to the roster during Pace’s suspension.

The only problem with this strategy is that, because McGinest is a vested veteran, he’d be entitled to receive his full salary as termination pay, if he’s on the opening-day roster and if he’s cut after Pace returns.

So the cheaper alternative would be to carry a guy who otherwise would have been dumped before the season started, and to drop him behind Vernon Gholston on the depth chart while Pace is gone.

McGinest, a 15-year veteran, has expressed an interest in returning to the Patriots. But we’ve heard that the Pats are unlikely to bring back the player they initially acquired in round one of the 1994 draft.
