Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is an unknown commodity, a wild card in the new regime’s plan to jump-start the offense.
As Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer points out, Daboll is the least seasoned of the Browns’ coordinators after defensive cooordinator Rob Ryan and special-teams coordinator Brad Seely.
Daboll has a varied background as a quarterbacks coach with the New York Jets following stints as a receivers coach and defensive assistant with the New England Patriots.
It’s unknown, though, what sort of play-calling abilities Daboll possesses.
“Mangini’s biggest gamble is Brian Daboll,” Pluto writes. “It may be a gutsy choice that pays off, or Daboll could suffer some of the rookie problems that come in the first year of calling plays under pressure. . . . Word from some of the players is Daboll’s personality doesn’t exactly ooze warmth, but he does know a lot of football.
“He is very organized, and there seems to be a purpose to what they are practicing. One key will be not to fall into the trap of some first-year coordinators who give their players too many formations and too many plays.”
It’s widely believed that a major emphasis for the Browns’ offense this fall will be establishing a more physical running game with Jamal Lewis running behind some bigger offensive linemen.
Per the report, the Browns also want to bolster drop-prone wide receiver Braylon Edwards’ confidence and feature his ability to run after the catch.
Daboll sounded very bright in his press conference…just like Mangini does.
I really really like the makeup of this coaching staff. Rob Ryan is the “players’ coach” who the defense will play hard for while Mangini is the discipline coach who keeps the team organized. Daboll is very organized and wants to use concepts of the Weis offense, the West Coast and the Air Coryell offense for a nice blend of offensive concepts.
This team is going to surprise some people now that there’s a real coaching staff here.
It’s fitting in a way – whenever one thinks about Mangini, “gutsy” is the first thing that comes to mind.
If they want to show off Edward’s running skills after he gets the ball I hope they plan on handing the ball off to him because he sure in the hell can’t catch!! And another thing if he could catch who is going to get him the ball?? Mangini won’t be there three years before they run him out of town.
Daboll is just Benito’s camp-follower. Before that he was McDnaiels’ understudy in NE. The difference between Daboll and McD, is McD actually is a damn good QB’s coach (just a sh!t-awful OC).
Cowher, Chuckie, Marty, and Mikey will all still be available after this season, though. For the sake of the Browns players and fans, lets hope one of them is running the show in Cleveland next year.
Nothing like firing all the coaches in Cleveland before they even coach their first game. I think a lot of people on here will be eating crow in the near future. Give the guy a chance.
