Ayers Off To Fast Start In Denver

We recently wrote about how defensive end-outside linebacker Jarvis Moss, a former first-round draft pick, is still struggling to crack the Denver Broncos' lineup.

Well, it's reportedly the opposite experience for Broncos rookie first-round draft pick Robert Ayers.

The former University of Tennessee all-conference pass rusher could wind up starting immediately at outside linebacker or defensive end.

Ayers has taken the majority of his snaps with the first-string defense at linebacker, according to Pro Football Weekly.

The Broncos have been experimenting with Ayers at both positions in their 3-4 alignment.

With Moss' minimal production, the Broncos sorely need someone to generate a pass rush.

And Ayers' athleticism could provide a boost.

The 6'3," 272-pounder has 4.75 speed in the 40-yard dash. He registered 15 1/2 tackles for losses and three sacks last season.

Ayers is a run stuffer, not a pass rusher. He will play OLB in running situations and DE in passing downs...letting Doom rush from the edge!

Well if we hadn't had traded for Cutler he was the guy I wanted the bears to take at 18, ironic eh?

I knew he would be a great player coming out of Tennessee. I saw him play a lot this year when I was watching some SEC football and he looked great. He should be great in the NFL. Jarvis Moss on the other hand looks like he will be doomed to the bench his whole career.

Took the words, orangecrushd, right out of my moutch. A website that actually works and good news from Denver. Hell froze, eh?

I don't care if this guy is Rich Jackson, Curly Culp and Lyle Alzado rolled into one. This team -- if they're lucky -- is 4-12. And I'm calling my shot here: Chris Simms is the quarterback. If not out of the gate, at least by week 4.

Good luck with 4-12, Joshy. The Denver fans are KNOWN for their patience.

I see more like 6-9 wins for the Broncos. The losses will likely be due to the defense slowly getting its act together.

Everyone is dissin' Orton based upon his play on a lousy offensive team called the Chicago Bears. In Denver, nobody will be asking Orton to throw Cutler-like rocket-armed passes 50 yards downfield. He's got one of the best offensive lines in football in front of him, a line that not only will generally give him more time than he ever dreamed of in Chicago but will also provide effective run blocking for what may well be one of the NFL's better rushing attacks.

This is a season for the Broncos to get themselves figured out under McDaniels and Nolan. I've got no problem with 7-9 wins and no playoffs if by season's end the team shows it's starting to gel. I definitely think the long range outlook is much better now than it would have been under Shanahan who refused to part with his woefully bad Defensive Coordinator Bob Slowik and allowed Cutler to sulk and pout during and after games.

It would have been nice if things could have worked out with Cutler in Denver, but if ever there were a team that Orton might have a decent chance of success on, I think this Broncos squad could very well be it.

    GO BRONCOS!
