Nick Collins Has Some Catching Up To Do

When Packers safety Nick Collins showed up for minicamp a few weeks back, he didn’t enjoy the media questioning his comfort with the new Green Bay defense.

“Let me get that corrected, correct you all on that. I’ve been in my playbook. . . . I know what I’m supposed to do out there.”

Collins may know the playbook, but defensive coordinator Dom Capers wants him on the field. “Obviously he’s got ground to make up,” Capers admitted recently.

While there is plenty of time before the season, Capers’ statement could be a subtle way of applying pressure to Collins that he better show up to training camp on time.

Collins skipped most of Green Bay’s offseason workouts and won’t publicly commit to showing up to training camp. His presence at the recent minicamp, however, indicates he’s likely to show on time for training camp.

As recent Green Bay contract disputes go (Javon Walker, Mike McKenzie, Ryan Grant), Collins’ desire for a new deal has been low key. Capers’ comment is another reason to think it will stay that way.
