Report: Kazemi Recently Bought A Gun

At a time when skepticism seems to be growing regarding the notion that a 20-year-old girl shot retired NFL quarterback Steve McNair four times before shooting herself in the head, a new report has emerged that could put the case to rest.

A nephew of Sahel Kazemi says that police told him Kazemi recently bought a gun, and that they are “almost sure” she killed McNair and then committed suicide.

Nashville police did not respond to the comments of Farzin Abdi, who was raised with Kazemi.

Abdi corroborated recent remarks from Kazemi’s niece, Sepidah Salmani, regarding Kazemi’s belief that McNair would be soon divorcing his wife.

So since Kazemi recently purchased a gun, that makes her guilty of killing Steve and killing herself? Ha, this doesn’t change the case at all.

any one else why no shots were heard? 5 shots and no one heard anything? just thought that was odd.

3. ninerblitz says: Jul 6, 2009 2:08 PM

Senseless violence. Senseless. The question that keeps baking my noodle is. If McNair didn’t cheat on his wife, would he be here today? Would Kazemi have done this to herself or someone else? No matter what the answer is. McNair will never get the opportunity to make amends for his bad decisions. Now ballers are going to have to pat down their “girlfriends”. I hope men and women learn from this.

The papers were saying Sahel was of Iranian decent. In all reality, if her and her family were conservative and Shi’a (majority of Iranians are Shi’a muslims) it’s considered a severe stain on the family name to have pre-marital relations of any kind. Honor-killings as they’re called is when a woman who has done something bad enough to stain the name commits suicide (or in more gruesome settings can be killed by members of the family, relatives, or members of the village).
If she expected a relationship with McNair and he renegged then the possibility that she did commit suicide is very very likely.
In no way am I bashing or being derogatory towards her or her nationality/faith etc.. as seen by my username I have a great affinity for the middle east and its cultures.

7. Reapster says: Jul 6, 2009 2:14 PM

Wait a minute how can a 20 year old buy a gun, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun, unless it was a rifle that doesn’t make any sense unless she bought it illegally.

8. JohnComp12 says: Jul 6, 2009 2:14 PM

Her recently buying a gun means nothing to you?? Was OJ innocent too?

9. EShine says: Jul 6, 2009 2:18 PM

Your linked article says something different than your assertion that they are “almost sure” she killed McNair…
“Abdi says he does not believe Kazemi would have killed the former Tennessee Titans quarterback and herself.”
Which is it?

No, but come on man, use your head. What possible reason would she have had for buying a gun now?
Sure, it could be coincidence, but it’s awful convenient for her to have bought a gun recently and for both Steve McNair and her to now be dead.

11. Miamifinzfan says: Jul 6, 2009 2:22 PM

Whatever, notice how “Cops” told nephew? Cops don’t do this. They do, but its simply to get nephew to confess or see what he knows. This is trickery that has been around forever. They would never release that info. This is a tactic to get murderer to relax. Watch.

12. MJA says: Jul 6, 2009 2:23 PM

Of course this changes the case. They now should be able to see if the gun used in the murder was registered to the girl. If it was, then it’s probably murder-suicide.

13. Bender says: Jul 6, 2009 2:26 PM

No matter what the movies want you to believe its pretty hard to fake a suicide. The forensics are going to point to what really happened pretty quickly.
Days leading up to it:
She keeps asking him when he is going to leave his wife. He ignores her
She buys a gun (probably with the intent of threatening his wife).
She is in DUI incident with SUV. He realizes his wife is going to find out and decides its time to end it.
Day of:
He goes to break it off – she flips out – they are both dead.
Lets not forget how volatile a 20 year old girl’s emotions are. I emphasize it because she is, for all intents and purposes, still a young child. Its a tragedy, but extremely common amongst us regular folk. No reason it wouldn’t be any different when there are millions of dollars involved.

Sure it does. The gun was found at the scene, so it shouldn’t be terribly difficult to trace it back to a registered owner (if there is an owner and if the sn is legible.) Chances are, the lead investigator already has a pretty good idea of what went down and these tidbits of info are either leaked or slowly released to the press as to not disrupt the process.

18. hotchick says: Jul 6, 2009 2:32 PM

No it only makes it less likely that this will not turn out to be what every reasonable persons first instinct was.
As soon as we heard “woman in the room too with one gunshot wound to the head” the safe assumption was murder suicide.
Every trickle of info since has supported that assumption.
So it does not make her guilty. It just makes the assumption that she is that much stronger.

24. Vicente Bastardo says: Jul 6, 2009 2:58 PM

Since it appears there was pre-meditation involved, it is possible the gun purchase was used as an attempt to keep the police off the boyfriends trail to further the notion of a murder-suicide.

25. RealityBased says: Jul 6, 2009 3:12 PM

Wait a minute. Most of the comments here are accepting the following at face value:
“A nephew of Sahel Kazemi says that police told him Kazemi recently bought a gun, and that they are “almost sure” she killed McNair and then committed suicide. ”
What makes that sound believable at all?
Why would the police tell the nephew that she recently bought a gun? And if they did, why would he run to the media with that info? Why would the nephew be talking to the media in a way as to point the finger at his deceased aunt?
If anything, this makes me start to wonder about her family as possible suspects.

Maybe she bought the gun as self protection from something else. Maybe McNair was there to help console, protect her. Too many maybe’s…I just know that the first assumption isn’t always the right one.

29. SB42everyyear says: Jul 6, 2009 3:28 PM

Miamifinzfan is right.
No police officer would say such a thing to an associate/family member of a victim considered to be a suspect in a murder.
Next we’ll be reading whether or not the gun she purchased is the same one used. Then it may take a few days to interview everyone and get the various forensic results.
Gotta admit this is one heck of a mystery.
And let’s try not to assume anything based on her nationality, age or sex. The murderer can not be profiled. That’s just plain silly talk.

She was from Iran but was of the B’hai faith. One of the articles I read gave her faith as the reason the family fled Iran.

32. manofaiki says: Jul 6, 2009 4:11 PM

It’s going to turn out the relationship soured really quickly and he was trying to ‘turn it off’ and ditch her and she killed him then herself.
This may be the first murder I am aware of over a situation like this involving a major sports figure, but stuff like this goes on all the time.
Countless sportsbeat writers could tell you stories of married players fooling around on the side that had their groupies/mistresses show up on the family doorbell itching for a confrontation with a player who had just dumped them, often ending up getting into it with a wife or a relative.
In one infamous incidents, a Philadelphia Eagles LBer was married to a white woman, with whom he had a child, when he began an extramarital affair with another younger black woman. Both ended up sitting in the wives section at a home Eagles game where a brawl broke out between them that had to be broken up by security.
Basketball star Kobe Bryant opened himself up to a more serious problem trying to get cheap easy sex in a hotel room from a hotel staff member while on a trip away from his wife.
Bill Parcells, a guy who has seen it all, used to have a speech he would give to his players on taking command of a new team. It essentially told them what they did off the field was their own business, but *******it, he was too old to put up with drama like some players neurotic girlfriend/groupie/mistress constantly trying to call him up on a cell phone during meetings and if that private stuff ever strayed on to the practice field, God help you.
Every year now one of the biggest things about the Rookie Symposium is teaching these young guys that now that they are young, often handsome, rich, and highly visible public figures, in their respective cities and across the country they become targets for neurotic, unbalanced women looking for an easy payday.
95% may just want a good time and to have fun, but unless you have a very sensitive radar for reading people, you might not be able to detect that dangerous 5% that is hoping to take you to the cleaners or worse.
Brian Urlacher, the MLBer for the Chicago Bears, has been embroiled in a child custody and other legal disputes with a – there’s really no other way to describe her – professional gold digger so shameless she deliberately got herself pregnant by him so she could sue him for a fortune. At the time he began a brief relationship with this woman he had no idea she had already publicly worked her way through two other men that were wealthy and high-profile, one being Michael Flatley, the creator of “Lord of the Dance”, whom she attempted to sue in court for allegedly raping her, seeking millions in damages.
Subsequent investigation revealed that she had made a false charge in the hopes of extorting money from him, and had a judgement of millions of dollars rendered against HER in a counter-suit.
Not knowing hardly anything about this dangerous woman, Urlacher met her in a nightclub, started a relationship, tried to end it a month or so later when he finally got around to realizing something was not quite right about this woman, at which time she was already pregnant by him.
Guys that insist on starting relationships like this should be well aware of the potential dangers they are facing, ESPECIALLY if they are married.
Nobody is more wrathful than a groupie/mistress who’s been told some player is leaving his wife for her and then finds out not only is the player not leaving his wife and kids for her, she’s being dumped.
More than a few players trying to be closet Lotharios have had to come home to find some wife in tears or in a rage or both after opening up the front door and finding herself face to face with some harpy looking for a fight, demanding to know where their husband is, and WHY HASN’T HE LEFT YOU YET??!!!
Every team has it’s favorite stories. This is undoubtably going to turn out to be the most tragic.

You want to know if it was suicide? Find out if she had gun powder residue on her hand. There is no possible way she can fire a pistol and not have residue remaining. That would answer the question. If she has none, then we have a double homicide.

Maybe it’s my imagination but I thought the (probable) murder weapon was in the room.
Call me stoopid, but has anyone asked these questions yet…
Was the gun at the crime scene the murder weapon?
If so, who was the gun registered to?
Did McNair or his buddies or his chick have any connection to the gun?
I’m thinking the answers to these questions will go a loooooong way in resolving the mysteries here.

And to think somebody actually took the bait and replied to me saying, “OK. You’re stoopid.”

We should be looking at the girl’s boyriend (Keith Norfleet) and his buddy as the prime suspects. There was a status update on Norfleet’s friend’s MySpace page that read:
“riden with keith. f*** a quarterback. who is Mcnair in 09? rip sahel kazemi”
The last log-in date for that account was July 2nd, two days before the murder.
The account has since been suspended, but I took a screen shot and sent it to Florio. Unfortunately, Mr. Florio has ignored that e-mail.

39. texasPHINSfan says: Jul 6, 2009 5:07 PM

if she bought a gun, and it was her gun used in the killings, the police would have figured this out on the first day when they ran the serial # on the gun.
the fact that this wasn’t solved on day 1 of the investigation and the fact that the coroner ruled her death “unknown” a day after the crime almost makes it obvious there is foul play….
i still think the investigators know more than they are sharing with the public, and they are being secretive hoping the killer slips up.
there is another possibility that perhaps Kazemi received death threats and bought the gun for protection. there isn’t a single source that has said the gun kazemi bought was the one at the scene – a lot of assuming going on in this thread. ;)
