Bruce Smith convicted of DUI

Roughly one month before a day that Bruce Smith will remember forever, he had one he'd like to forget.

The all time NFL sacks leader was convicted of DUI Thursday in a Virginia court.

Smith has been arrested three times for driving while intoxicated, but this is the first time he's been convicted of the charge.

The former Buffalo Bills stalwart received a 90-day suspended jail term, and the court fined him $350.

Smith says he'll appeal the verdict.

His lawyer argued previously that Smith struggled with the heel-to-toe walk of the field sobriety test because of all his previous surgeries.

Smith will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 8.

See...it takes a MAN like Gregg Rosenthall (much unlike a child like Aaron Wilson) to not link a story about a former Redskins (though he's known more as a Bill) to....

    - Albert Haynesworths Court Case
    - Redskins Tampering with Haynesworth
    - Laron Landry wanting to be traded
    - Clinton Portis showing up Florio

I LOVE that the Redskins are SOOOOO in those two fools' heads.

    HAIL!!!

3 times D.U.I. and gets a 90 day suspended jail term and a $350 fine. And he's going to appeal that slap on the wrist. What a douchebag! Pays to be famous I guess.

Too bad he won't be making his speech from a jail cell.

I don't usually like cops because I've had bad experiences with them, but you can't really feel sorry for someone who was drinking and driving.

Though this story would have been far more interesting had Smith sacked the arresting officer, causing him to fumble his gun, and subsequently run it back for a touchdown. Followed by much more serious charges.

Being a life long Bill's fan and in the Buffalo area (Go Figure), what he was sentenced is way too short. He has done this over and over again. The excuse before when he was a sleep behind the wheel at a traffic light in Virgina was that he had sleep apnea. No he was drunk and past out. Take responsibility and do your punishment, don't try to BUY your way out of it.

He is a great player don't get me wrong, but this garabage of DUI and previous drug use (including suspensions) has forever tainted him in my eyes.

Saying Bruce Smith couldn't do the heel-to-toe walk because of previous surgeries is like saying a guy is only cheating on his wife to fill the void left after retiring from football.

    Ridiculous...

Is there a mixed drink called 'surgeries'? there must be and he must have had more then a few, because that's the only reason why his heel to toe test was so troublesome.

I liked Bruce Smith as a football player, but he's a habitual drunk driver. Obviously, he's learned nothing through the years about how drinking and driving is a bad combination. The only question is how long it will be before this asshole drives drunk into another car and kills someone? My guess..., it won't be long.

Interesting tidbit: the officer who arrested Smith for this DUI got busted for DUI himself on June 20 after causing a crash at 2 am. Officer Womble, who is a part of the Virginia Beach Selective Enforcement Team that focuses on catching drunk drivers, registered a .15 on the breathalyzer.

If convicted, Womble would serve a mandatory 5 days in jail. I believe he will also be required to have an ignition interlock installed in his car.

I would also imagine Bruce Smith's attorney will be praying for Womble's conviction so he can throw it out there during Smith's appeal.

For his THIRD DUI??? And that is just the times he has been CAUGHT.....no telling how many times he actually drove under the influence.

He (and his fellow citizens) should be grateful he did not kill someone while behind the wheel drunk.

With a stiff sentence like that one (tongue now being removed from cheek) I'm SURE he will never, ever do it again. That'll teach him, for sure.

He got off the other two, so he's only a first time offender. It's obvious a lot was left out here. He will lose his license to drive for a year, the $350 doesn't include court costs, and he will have to attend ASAP which will cost hime $300 plus class room fees.

Maybe he will show up to his "enshrinement" Schmitt-Faced?

Wow, Quite a lot considering the fact that Michael Irvin was sentenced to a $10,000 fine, 800 hours of community service and four years probation for a crime that he was never convicted of. Good thing for him that Dallas area cops and courts are totally in the tank for Cowboys players, unlike every other freaking place that has an NFL team. A Patriots player gets busted dead-to-rights smuggling drugs, doesn't cost him a thing. A guy from the Bills runs over a lady, doesn't cost him a thing. A Cleveland Browns guy kills another guy, he gets 30 days. A Giants guy discharges a firearm in a bar and in the process violates a law that carries a mandatory 3.5 year prison sentence, another Giants guy transports an illegal firearm across state lines for purposes of hampering a police investigation, we'll be lucky if either of them spends an hour in jail. Looks like the Eagirls guy who was caught burglarizing a residence will get off like his brother did. Nobody really gives a damn that the Colts WR shot up a section of Philly and hit a kid in the process. But oh yeah, Cowboys players get preferential treatment. If Leonard Davis farts near the DPD HQ he'll go straight to prison for discharging noxious fumes without a permit.
