Favre squeezing the Vikes for more money?

Despite a widespread belief that the Vikings would pull the curtain off the Brett Favre statue later this week, in advance of the July 20 date on which single-game tickets will go on sale, it now appears that Favre possibly won’t be making a decision (or, as the case may be, announcing a decision that already has been made) until some date later in the month of July.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that, if anything happens with Favre, it won’t happen until closer to the opening of training camp, on July 31. (This meshes with Ed Werder’s more comprehensive report regarding the status of Favre’s deliberations.)

So could it be that Favre is being coy in the hopes of finagling the best possible contract out of a Vikings’ team that has done nothing to knock down the notion that Favre will be a Viking?

Maybe the reality is that the Vikings don’t need to unfurl Favre before July 20 because everyone who would be inclined to snatch up the single game seats already is assuming that Santa Claus is coming to town. And maybe Favre thinks that, with each passing day, the threat of not playing at all for the Vikings could cause the team to pay him even more money.

With no other team in the mix (yet) for Favre, his only leverage is to remain retired.

And if that happens, it would be fitting. Favre has a knack for doing the unexpected, and nothing would be more unexpected at this point than for Favre to do nothing at all.
