Many of you have pointed out that Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis went a little bit over the top (not exactly out of character) when eulogizing former Titans and Ravens quarterback Steve McNair.
Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News takes a more pragmatic view of McNair's life, and of the reality that many pro athletes and celebrities parlay their fame and fortune into multiple simultaneous relationships with members of the fairer gender.
We, too, tried to take an objective look at McNair's legacy in a recent PFTV segment. Here it is, in our swanky new NBC video player, along with a look at whether McNair will end up in Canton.

my bad, it was probably flashblock on firefox that kept it from loading. on IE it works fine.
What two broken thumbs said. Go back to youtube. I've tried watching that shitty video three times now and it keeps restarting after only 30 seconds.

I have a tough time with Warner getting in the Hall of Fame too. He is very borderline because he has been a bit of journeyman for a good portion of his career. From this generation, it's Brady, Manning, and Favre. Those are great quarterbacks. Warner and McNair had some great years. But how many quarterbacks are you going to put in Canton anyway? Enough is enough.
Steve McNair belongs in the Hall of Very Good. He does not belong in the Hall of Fame. Never won a SB. Never led the league in passing. Never led the league in TD or rating. Was a very good QB who found a way more often than not, to win. But he was not a HOF type player in my opinion and I should be biased in his favor as a Ravens fan.

I guarantee he will make the HoF. White guilt and sadness over his death makes him a lock.

You aren't racist, but your comment is absolutely moronic. You clearly have no idea what white guilt is or when it would apply.
"Swanky new NBC video player" = commercials? No thanks. Looks like PFTV ratings will be going down.
Speaking of ratings, when are comment ratings coming back?
@ ringsoft - exactly!
Video keep reloading & won't play (Firefox v3). I hate to complain, but when it takes several attempts at logging in before the Reply box appears, and the video itself doesn't play > 30 seconds, any football-related comment I may have is pretty much gone..
The NBC Video Player is really poor. It takes forever to load. It restarted once after about 30 seconds and then I lost picture but not audio for the second half. Also the volume control is poor and I didn't have the option to increase the screen size.
The youtube player is much much better and has a lot better server capacity. Please go back to youtube or just quit making video segments. This is one thing about going to NBC that is definitely a change for the worse.
I agree with truthsayer. You beg for people to watch PFTV and now you add commercials at the beginning of them? TIVO was invented for a reason, to bypass commercials we don't want to see. If every PFTV segment is going to have a commecial at the beginning, I will never watch another PFTV segment again.
GO BACK TO WHAT GOT YOU HERE FLORIO!
Seriously, you've got plenty of ad space on the left and right of your blog to sell if you really need the money. Keep the commercials off PFTV. PLEASE!
I will stop watching these segments if it continues. And I've been here for the 8 years since you first opened the doors on PFT.
Don't disappoint you faithful followers!
Video wouldn't play after 10 seconds. Phuck it.

Quit staring at us, Mike. It's really starting to freak me out. It's like that doll that looked like Costanza's mom. The NBC logo on the camera must be like a magnet for your eyes.
You're right though -- McNair
McNair was revered by many.....
I drove thru Mt Olive, Mississippi last Friday night on our way to a weekend home we have near there. It looked like parking at the Minnesota State Fair. Hundreds of cars parked near the road and Highway 49 southbound backed up for over a mile. They expected 2000 people to show up at the Mt Olive funeral home for visitation and 5000 showed up.... in a town of 982 people.
People waited in line for up to 5 hours! Was he loved? H*ll yes, he was loved for the man he was, and this episode did not define him in anyway.
The Hattiesburg Memorial service had 5000 people, add in the other 5000 people in Mt Olive that came out, both white and black. 10,000 total in Mississippi alone. That isn't even counting the Nashville service either.
I drove by Griffith Cemetary (his burial place)on the way home tonight w/o realzing he was buried there, it is not far from his 650 acre property. I may have to stop in some time.
McNair was a giving, generous and humble individual who did not complain. He was giving of him time and money to others. Had he lived the positive returns from his life would have been even larger than the thousands that mourned him can attest.
To be honest, comparing McNair and Kurt Warner is pretty silly. It's almost like comparing Randy Moss and Jimmy Smith just because a couple of their career numbers look vaguely similar on paper.
First of all, McNair's body of work had the benefit of 53 extra starts. On a per-game, per-season basis, Warner has had better numbers.
Looking beyond the one or two stats that are close, PFT decided to examine only McNair's rushing numbers. He was obviously the far superior running quarterback. But what about the fact that Warner is obviously the far superior efficient quarterback, which, in my view, deserves mention. Check out their completion percentages, yards per attempt and passer ratings. Not even close.
Also not close are their playoff legacies. Warner has the 3 highest single-game passing yard totals in Super Bowl history, while leading two different franchises to the big game. McNair got there once. Their career playoff TD-INT totals? Warner 26-13, McNair 6-11. Career playoff W-L totals? Warner 8-3, McNair 5-5. McNair may have been one tough mofo, but as a big-game clutch QB, he's right up there with Drew Bledsoe.
I'm not trying to take away from McNair's solid career. But there are reasons why Warner has been discussed as a potential Hall of Famer. To say McNair has been overlooked in this regard is stretching it. To me, he has gotten the amount of respect he deserves, on the same level as a Phil Simms, Boomer Esiason or Randall Cunningham. Very good players, but ultimately, on the outside looking in.
