Cooley lobbies for "smart football"

NFL_Cooley_250.jpgThe four-week sabbatical from his Monday Morning Quarterback column continues for Peter King of SI.com.  And so does the parade of guest writers.

This week, Redskins tight end Chris Cooley gets the honors, and he devotes the fairly well written (when grading on a curve) item primarily to making the case for the NFL to load up the football with the technology that once caused Michael Scott to drive into a lake.

It's not a new idea (sorry, Chris); many have argued over recent years that the notoriously change-resistant NFL should embrace all available computerized innovations.  The goal should be to "get it right" all the time, and many tools are available for making that happen.

And the technologies are in the works.  For example, in December 2008, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that a professor at Carnegie Mellon University is developing a ball equipped with remote sensing technology.

But Cooley isn't a fan of all technology.

"Cell phone cameras are out of control right now," Cooley writes.  "Just shake hands and say hello.  Oh, and I know that if someone tries to video me taking a piss again, I'm not going to hesitate to punch them square in the face."

So, under that standard, wouldn't Cooley have to punch himself?

Can PFT add a Meathead Power Ranking feature to the site? Cooley is a surefire top 10 pick.

Since your post didn't tell us anything about what sort of "smart football" Cooley is lobbying for, we are left to either click a link away from your site or make assumptions.

Anyway, if they made smart footballs, smart shoes, and smart fields, then we would perhaps be able to tell for sure when the ball crossed the plane of the endzone and whether the WR got two feet down before or after catching the football.

Chris Cooley is awesome. That dude should have his own reality show.

  5. jersey73 says: July 13, 2009 9:54 AM

Cooley is all over the place in that article. As unfocused and undisciplined of a writer as can be.

And what is with the knock on Trent Green? Was it sarcasm?

Why is the NFL so quick to remove fun things like endzone celebrations yet do nothing to to ensure the calls are accurate from these $hit headed refs?

I've said before and I'll say it again:

We'll all be cyborgs before we know it.

Humanity is evolving symbiotically WITH technology.

Hearing aides, bluetooths (blueteeth?), contact lenses, microchip implants, prosthetic limbs, pace-makers, cell phones and ipods, Lee press-on nails, the internet and social networking sights, bar codes, and so on...

We'll be the BORG (like on Star Trek) before you know it.

    Wait--what were we talking about?

    Oh yeah...football. With technological modifications/"upgrades".

    And photos of men p1ssing.

    I'm against both of them.

Pretty much a lame effort by Cooley. He put much less into this than Light or Green. How would smart football have helped Al Davis. The tuck rule was correctly called on review. It's not the same as Ed Hochulie blowing a call. Is Peter King running out of white guys to replace him? I would love to read 10 Things Chad Johnson think he thinks.

  9. orangecrushd says: July 13, 2009 10:11 AM

I wonder if King is going to invite a black player to write in his place in the 4th week. 3 white guys in a row in a league that's 85% black. I'm not black, but it's interesting.

  10. empty13 says: July 13, 2009 10:18 AM

that's cause those other guys dont have coherent thoughts and cant write anyway.

I love how the race of the guest writers is being brought up. Seriously? I have no idea how the guest writers were chosen, but my guess is a bunch were asked and what we got are those that agreed to do it. Surely some declined and some of those that declined were probably black.......ah I mean african american.

I am a Skins fan and I love Cooley, but does anyone think Cooley was in the top 5 of people King wanted to do this? Sure he has a regular blog, but what is put on there mirror's what he wrote for King. All over the place.

So there have been 3 white.............ah I mean european americans writing in place of King. So what? Or does SI need to enact a "Rooney Rule" for guest writers?

King is just trying to keep the man down

What's with the criticism of Green, McNabb, and Birk?

This poorly written piece doesn't exactly separate him from the allegedly poor writing of others.

  14. mashoaf says: July 13, 2009 11:14 AM

Why is Cooley worried about anyone video taping his junk? Didn't he already do that a' la Sean Salisbury with his playbook and blog?

  15. smiley says: July 13, 2009 11:43 AM

Good article. Why wouldn't we want to use technology os it's available?

  16. Eddie Drycleaner says: July 13, 2009 12:00 PM

    A. I believe you are considered "Anglo Americans," or "Caucasians". European Americans are people from Europe who immigrate here and become citizens. Surely some of you were born here. And Australia has white people two, and contrary to your beliefs, Australia is not in Europe, that one's Austria.

    B. I'm sure the players union just LOVES how Cooley brings up his teammate's contract(Haynes"not"worth) in relation to how much money is in the NFL. Hey moron, you're in a labor negotiation. Do you really want to bring up that you guys are overpaid? I mean I love overpaid athletes, they're true capitalists, but you just shouldn't bring it up when you're negotiating.

  17. Eddie Drycleaner says: July 13, 2009 12:01 PM

Sean Salisbury showed his weiner too? I guess I better join the trend. You will get pictures within the hour

  18. Pastabelly says: July 13, 2009 1:35 PM

Yup, you always want guys like this taking over your column for a week:

"All apologies from the website. We are very sorry that we showed (genitals) on our website all day yesterday. That was by no means our intention and we did not want to offend anyone. The picture wouldn't have been up for so long, but we were in the middle of winning a big game. Once again, this was a complete accident and we regret not reviewing the post more closely. Thanks."

He posted a picture of himself completed naked on the web and it wasn't intentional. Good thing he wasn't playing with his twitter or he would have been in trouble with the league office.

Let's not forget he is an entertainer (sports is entertainment for all of you who dont think so) on and off the field. Keep doing your thing Cooooley ! How could anybody not like this kid? Unless you live in Dallas,Philly or NY....or Cleveland (get over it) HAIL

The main problem with the "smart" football is that when there's a questionable call at the goal line, I think it's much more often a question of whether the ball crossed before the runner's knees hit the ground, rather than a question of whether the ball crossed the plane at all.

I've seen far more cases when it was clear that the ball did indeed cross the goal line, but not clear whether that occurred before or after the runner's knees, often obscured within a pile of humanity, hit the ground. In those cases we'll still be stuck with instant replay and judgment calls, no matter how "smart" the ball is.

Wow...I can't believe Florio AND a bunch of you commentors totally missed the mark on Cooley.

He's a sarcastic pain in the tuchas. That's his persona. Of course he's going to call out Birk and Green like that...he's doing it with a smirk on his face.

Go to his blog...read up a little more, and stop trying to out-wit the world.

In Florio's case (and that insecure garbage writer Aaron Wilson)...get that huge Redskins Chip off our shoulder.

Besides. Reading some of the stuff that's here every once in a while (don't get me wrong...most of it is great)...I don't think Flo-Ri-Duh has much room to talk either.

    "Hello Pot...I'm Kettle...Did you know you're Black?"

How dare you call us "caucasians". Only caucasians can use that word. You racist pig.
