Pats announce Butler signing

Not long after we posted an item indicating that there was concern in league circles that the NFL Management Council would disapprove the contract signed by the Patriots and second-round pick Darius Butler, the Patriots officially announced that Butler has been signed.

It’s not clear whether this means that the NFL Management Council has approved the deal, or whether the deal has been signed by the Patriots and the player and submitted for approval.

We’re in the process of tracking down the answer to that specific question.

And we’re grateful for the fact that this story has provided the basis for multiple postings on an otherwise sssslow day.

    Little bit of Journalism 101 for you, Florio. Don’t put up a follow-up piece to an article until you have all the facts. It doesn’t matter whether the Pats have confirmed the signing. All that means is that he could have signed a piece of toilet paper. Instead of putting up this piece, confirm that the contract has been approved by the appropriate sources then write a follow-up stating that the contract is official on both sides.

    @ryans46d . . . .
    why not just call it “how to deprive your audience of information about what might be happening 101″? why is it wrong to let the audience see what’s transpiring as a story is being pursued?

    I might give Flo a lot of unsolicited advice, but I don’t think I need to give him journalism advice. For one, he doesn’t claim to be a journalist(but don’t tell NBC that.)
    I guess the title “Rumor Mill” wasn’t clear enough for some people.

    Florio, i would give you a “5″ on the rating system, but……

    @Mike Florio
    Wrong. The reason why media in this country, regardless of media, is complete and utter garbage is because nobody confirms sources. I get wanting to provide the readers an “as the story unfolds” piece but if you put in that piece a statement that says its unknown whether or not the NFL Management Council has provided approval, to me, is wrong. Find out if it has been. Make a phone call or two. Probably not too hard to find out.

    OMG. That has to be the first time I’ve seen Florio just b**** slap someone.
    Good job.

    I wonder if they’re making a call or two.
