Poll: Cowboys America's most hated team

NFL_phillips.jpgOld habits die hard.  Apparently, so does old hatred.

In a poll taken by ESPN, the reality show loving Dallas Cowboys fended off a Spygate-fueled challenge from the New England Patriots to win the title of America’s most hated team

Only five teams were listed as possible answers, led by the Cowboys (36%), Patriots (34%), Steelers (12%), Giants (9%), and Raiders (9%).

And while the poll is clearly being used as an artificial time-waster during the NFL’s sssslow period, the 870,000 votes cast across 25 topics reveal other interesting glimpses into what football fans think.

Michael Vick, for instance, has roughly three times the fan support of other exiled players Donte’ Stallworth and Plaxico Burress.  And fans would still rather have Vick or Stallworth on their team than Terrell Owens.  (Perhaps Joanna Krupa voted.)

The answers to two other topics may catch the league office’s attention.

64% of respondents are in favor of an 18-game season.  No surprise there.

A whopping 77% of NFL fans said they’d “appreciate” legal gambling on those games in their state.  Even less of a surprise there.

Like most Americans, I too, hate the Cowboys.
But it’s hard to fathom how more people support Vick than Stallworth or Burress.
Vick is a punk, a thug, and a moron.
Burress is just a punk and a moron.
And Stallworth is merely a moron.

  2. Jackal138 says: Jul 13, 2009 2:22 PM

Wow, this is news? People hate the Cowboys because of how much the media loves them for no reason, and how annoying their cross-country bandwagon fanbase is.

  3. mrmagoo says: Jul 13, 2009 2:28 PM

It must be Cowboy fans saying they hate them. I can’t imagine the rest of the football world getting all riled up over mediocrity.

  4. FireJerryJones says: Jul 13, 2009 2:28 PM

    Wow.
Not sure why all the haters are out there. Cowboys haven’t won a damn playoff game in the Greg Ellis era.
    Stuck on 1993.
That’s the year Clinton first got elected.

  5. CurseofBoJackson says: Jul 13, 2009 2:30 PM

18 games, three pre seasons games, legal gambling yes. Senseless people who would rather have a mediocre quarterback and an under producing WR rather than TO no, un-freaking-believeable.

I don’t think most fans like the owners of the Cowboys and Raiders. As for the Steelers and Patriots, those teams have been pretty dominate the last decade or so. Can’t explain the Giants.

  10. Big Stretch says: Jul 13, 2009 2:38 PM

As much as i love football sundays…and saturdays…and thursdays, I have to say making the season 18 games may result in teams being watered down by the time the playoffs start(injury). Taking 2 games away from the preseason, I don’t watch it either, doesn’t seem like a good idea, I thought preseason was the time to evaluate young talent and define depth charts. If the season is changed to 18 games those young players fighting for jobs in the preseason will be even less prepared to play than they are with things they way they are right now. I’m not sure what Goodell’s agenda is anymore, since he took the job all i hear about is ways the NFL can change….games in london, extended season, indefinate suspensions…
I had no idea NFL was being run so poorly, or that the fans that make the NFL thrive were so unhappy with the way things were being done.
How about focus on the CBA and a rookie pay scale things that fans are concerned with. Focusing on this other stuff while the threat of a strike looms overhead, doesn’t seems like sound judgment.
GOODELL Haven’t you heard the saying “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”??????????????

  12. Levito says: Jul 13, 2009 2:46 PM

why are the giants even on that list? I’m pretty sure the Eagles are hated much more. And the 9ers, even though they suck lately, have won 5 superbowls. Usually winning a lot gets you a lot of haters — so I guess that explains why the Eagles aren’t on the list

  13. JoeSixPack says: Jul 13, 2009 2:49 PM

WHAT???? On behalf of Patriots fans everywhere, this is an outrage.
With Brady back and the offense and defense both improved over 2007 this disrespect is sure to drive the team to run up the score every game and achieve the perfect season.

  14. zilla1126 says: Jul 13, 2009 2:50 PM

Based on the editorial direction of this site and a large percentage of those who post comments; I’d say the Colts should have been included as a choice in the poll.
Based on the opportunistic bile pointed their way; surely they would have been first.

  15. WarLoxx says: Jul 13, 2009 2:51 PM

I don’t think that the Cowboys being the most hated team is big news but Vick having more support than Burress is crazy. What Burress did was idiotic/stupid but what Vick did was bordering on psychotic.

  16. GB3Pack4 says: Jul 13, 2009 2:52 PM

In my house, the Patriots – whom I used to respect and love – I now loathe (though I still like a handful of the players).
The Cowboys, don’t rise to the “strength level” of hate. You don’t hate somebody you don’t respect. They’re just a terrible disappointment. All that talent! Their major problem is the front office. Until that’s fixed from top to bottom, talent, commitment-to-team and professionalism will remain at the bottom of the barrel, while ego, greed, lack of discipline and self-respect, etc., float comfortably on top.
I have a lot of respect for the Giants and for the Steelers, and believe it or not, a lingering affection for, and Tinkerbell’s “I believe” kind of faith in their eventual re-emergence.

  17. Pastabelly says: Jul 13, 2009 2:52 PM

As a Patriots fan, I think the goal here is to overtake the Cowboys. The plan is simple. First, win another Super Bowl this coming year. Second, be obnoxious on these types of messageboards. Third, and finally, gloat when we win and act like it is our birthright. In other words, act like Yankee fans (well, Yankees fans before Y2K :)

  18. Doctor Diggs says: Jul 13, 2009 2:54 PM

  19. brewcrewe says: Jul 13, 2009 2:58 PM

Nothing new here. Like the Yankees and Lakers, if you have the biggest fan base, you will have the largest group of people who hate you. That is why the most watched games all-time are all Cowboy games. You will find alot more Cowboy fans in NY than you will find Giant, or any other teams fans in Cowboyland(Texas, Louisiana,Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Arkansas.)

  20. Hungry N. Hadasnack says: Jul 13, 2009 2:59 PM

Get we get a poll result on how fans feel about the NFL exporting itself internationally?
I would love for the NFL to hear how fans feel about their favorite team’s home games being sold and shipped to foreign countries, how their home town revenue is/will be given away, and how local jobs are/will be lost, and how millions of dollars in local income and tourism have been/will be given away, and how a great source of local entertainment and innate regional identity is slowly being whored away for an additional quick buck for the billionaire owners?
No, I imagine they don’t want to hear all that…especially not when money’s talking (SCREAMING) at them.
So let’s just keep selling America off to the rest of the world, one bit at a time.
(Soon, we’ll REALLY have reason to sing “We are the world…” because we WILL BE…which means we WON’T be us anymore.)

  21. Hungry N. Hadasnack says: Jul 13, 2009 3:01 PM

I think the poll was incomplete, because it should have included the Vikings as an option.
(Wonder how Favre would’ve stacked up against Vick, Stallworth, Plaxico, and Me-O…?)

  22. gopherb24 says: Jul 13, 2009 3:05 PM

  25. rlmosher76 says: Jul 13, 2009 3:24 PM

you know it’s funny, patriots and eagles fans are some of the most obnoxious in all of sports and yet the eagles aren’t even on the list and the cowboys somehow still beat the pats. The truth of the matter is that the media is biased toward any team they think that might take the heat off of them and their journalistic “standards”. Nobody even bothers to check sources , (or even have sources, you hear me werder?), they just make up BS to get readers and the cowboys are an easy target. If you are tired of seeing cowboy related news it’s your own fault for watching, reading and talking about it every time they run a “story”. Use your heads, the media is playing us like a fiddle, and we let them.

Florio, why don’t you post two polls: 1) Who is the most hated person that posts on this site.
    2) Post the Stallworth, Vick, Plaxico question for the educated football fans that visit this site to vote on. ESPN.com sucks and they can shove their “insider” b.s. straight up their ……..

Yes on the gambling, of course…

  36. SpartaChris says: Jul 13, 2009 4:08 PM

I’m not surprised by the results of the most hated team. The Cowboys are a lot like France- Smug, overly arrogant and cocky for no reason. It’s been years since they actually accomplished anything, yet their attitude would have you believing they walk on water.
It’s no surprise to see the Patriots get so much hate. When you’re consistently the best of the best, you’re naturally going to have a lot of jealous people who want nothing more than to see you fall.
I’d like to say I’m surprised by the Vick support, but the truth is only stupid people seem to be breeding. Such is life I guess.

Unless you have a REALLY good reason…support your home team. You know…because you can actually go to a bunch of games and support them.
People who hate their home teams equate to a bunch of cheap bast_rds who don’t want to spend their dime to support their home team on a regular basis (I love using that argument).
The fans I HATE the most are the ones that are Cowboys, Lakers and Yankees fans. Unfortunately I know several of these. Their EXCUSE…”I liked those teams when I was a kid.”
My response: “Yeah, you like sh_tting your pampers when you were a kid too.”

Hold on there, Chief. It all depends on how you measure success.
If you measure it by league championships, the top 5 successful teams are:
    Packers
    Bears
    Browns
    Giants
    Steelers
If you measure it by Super Bowls, it goes:
    Steelers
    Cowboys
    49ers
Five way tie for 4th (Packers, Giants, Redskins, Patriots, Raiders)
If you measure it by winning percentage, it’s:
    Dolphins
    Bears
    Cowboys
    Browns
    Packers
I’d advise you to get your metrics defined before trying to quantify things.

  43. screaming sheep says: Jul 13, 2009 5:30 PM

  44. Norseman says: Jul 13, 2009 5:36 PM

Hey all you politicians that may be reading this, can we pretty please have legal sports gambling? The solid foundation and financial security that betting with one of the big corporate casinos would provide would put the street corner bookies out of business. Crime would go down, not up. And millions of Americans wouldn’t be forced to send money to overseas online sportsbooks, resulting in an evaporation of money out of our economy.

  45. Jackal138 says: Jul 13, 2009 5:42 PM

Sure sounds like jealousy to me. And don’t say jack about SB rings, because that’s a straw man argument too. We’re talking about jealous of NFC dominance, and playoff wins.

Misinterpetors from cheatland are the hated team……..PERIOD

  48. Jintsbowl says: Jul 13, 2009 5:59 PM

They are America’s most hated team because they go around claiming themselves as America’s Team, not because they have a storied history. At least Laker and Yankee fans aren’t that arrogant.
It’s a close call btw the Eagles and Cowboys…but I have respect for both.

  49. mborz says: Jul 13, 2009 6:28 PM

@SpartaChris: I see. So the Cowboys being on the list shows how smug and cocky they are and the Patriots being on the very same list shows how good they are. Nice how exact the same data can mean something bad when applied to a team you don’t like and then can mean something good applied to a team that you do like.
Look, I don’t care much about either team you mentioned. I’m a Steelers fan, and at least I’m reasonable enough to understand that a lot of people don’t like them for reasons other than them being good (arrogant fans, Rooney Rule, Rooney’s involvement with Obama, cheap shots, etc. etc. etc. — I could go on and on here)
Likewise, there are lots of reasons people dislike the Patriots other than just being jealous. And if you can’t see that, it’s probably because you’re one of the reasons.

  50. rlmosher76 says: Jul 13, 2009 6:38 PM

For the record, cowboy fans don’t call themselves America’s team, the media does it to stir up controversy and get ratings. Open your eyes and see what the puppet masters are doing. Trust me , we as cowboy fans know EXACTLY how long our playoff drought has been. We also know that the America’s team label was from the 90′s. Let it go espn, we moved on, so should you. Everyone can say what they want about our fans, but being a fan of the cowboys is one of the hardest jobs of any fans in professional sports. No matter what happens we are always targeted and hated.

  51. romo2witten says: Jul 13, 2009 6:41 PM

People really love to hate the Cowboys. I am a diehard fan and I’ve been a fan for 30 years. For better or for worse, depending on your perspective, the Cowboys get more media coverage than any other team. Some of it is self-inflicted, but a lot of it is just ESPN and the local Dallas media blowing every single issue with the team completely out of proportion. The fact that so many people claim to hate them only fuels the media because they know if they can dig up some dirt on the team then the ratings will skyrocket.

    Fixed.
“We’re talking about jealous of NFC dominance, and playoff wins.”
Yeah well when the Eagirls can do better than 5 winning seasons in a row, maybe I’ll be jealous. In fact if they make it to 20 seasons in a row like the Cowboys have, I guarantee that I might get jealous. But since they haven’t been able to put together more than 5 winning seasons in a row since before Jeffrey Lurie was born. Hell, the Cowboys are currently on a 4 season winning streak. Are you jealous?
And don’t forget that even though they haven’t won a playoff game since Clinton was president, and even though the Eagirls have been around decades longer than the Cowboys, the Cowboys have won almost as many playoff games (32) as the total number of playoff games the Eagirls have played in (37). The Eagirls have never experienced that level of dominance and playoff wins. Don’t pretend that they have. Forget “great” and forget “really good”, the Eagirls have never been anything above “pretty good”. There’s nothing to be jealous of. They might as well be the Saints or Bengals. Congrats Eagirls, you’re at one winning season in a row.

  53. VoxVeritas says: Jul 13, 2009 7:33 PM

    Cowboys = 32 playoff wins
    Giants + Jets = 28 playoff wins
    Dolphins + Bucs + Jags = 31 playoff wins
Bengals + old Browns + new Browns + Ravens = 28 playoff wins

There were very few Pats fans 10 years ago, now you see them all over the place. With that .509 all-time record, all it would take is a couple of bad seasons to put the Patriots back in to the all-time loser column. And let’s not pretend that it can’t happen…as an obviously very long-term Patriots fan, you must know how bad they were before they fairly recently got good for the first time in their entire existence. “consistently the best of the best” hahaha I know you’re kidding.

I just love to watch his expression of disbelief because he thinks it was him and not Jimmy Johnson who was responsible for their previous success.
They should have expanded the poll to include more than 5 teams. Include up to 31 teams but not the Vikings, hire the handicap seems to be theme as evidence by their GM, head coach and soon to signed over the hill INT throwing QB.

Vox, the Cowboys will not win another superbowl for at least 15 years. The current teams or owners have nothing to do with the past. Jerry Jones ruined one of the all time great teams when he fired Jimmy Johnson. It pains me to say that but I feel it is true. What I cannot undersand is how you make excuses for these guys and talk about the past instead of outrage.
Outrage, Vox. Your team was great ad the current owner ruined it becuase of his ego. We may not have the great history but at least we are not stepford fans like you and we call our team on the carpet. Wins that many years ago is OK??? Just how long until it starts bothering you? Maybe this year you will dissapear for 2 months after the Cowboys get eliminated.
Be a man and have your own opinion. Your good with stats and numbers. Look at Jerry’s and think. You do not have to admit it to us, but at least admit it to yourself. Repeat after me: Jerry is a joke and he ruined the team. You guys should be screaming for him to sell the team..
BTW to all of the geniuses out there. The Eagles were not voted on because they were not a choice on the poll. How the hell can you do a poll and not list EVERY team. And why should PFT post the results of a BS poll….

It is freaking awesome to be a Cowboy fan. Better to be hated for being the best, than to be a fan a fan of the all the rest.
    RECORDS:
    160 consecutive sold out games
    8 SuperBowl appearances
    20 consecutive winning seasons
    56 playoff games
20 division titles (that’s for the Eagle, Giant&Redskin fans)
    7 SuperBowl MVP’s
p.s. I’m glad the new stadium will include the famous”hole in the roof”, so God can rest and continue to watch his favorite team play on Sunday.

You’re having a bad day, brewcrewe. Just stop trying to post statistics. Anything fact-related can be checked and subsequently debunked.
160 consecutive sellouts would not be a record. How do I know? Well, the Packers have sold out more than 300 home games and running. I don’t know if that’s a record, but I do know 300 > 160.
Also, I have a problem with claiming 7 Super Bowl MVPs when two of them were named co-MVPs. And one of the others was named MVP in a loss. That one rings hollow.
I only count 18 division titles for the Boys. Maybe my numbers are wrong on that one. Not sure.
The 8 Super Bowl appearances and 20 winning seasons are correct. I’m not checking the playoff games figure. Even I have better things to do.

    jimicos,
How many of those numbers were you alive for. How many when you actually paid attention (i.e. not 3 years old). And if the number is high, then realize that they will not change much in your lifetime.
But congrats. You Cowboy fans sure are historians!! They must teach football history in the schools down there… but most Dallas fans on this site are not from Dallas – most are from Philly (like Cowboycrazy) and Topeka (Vox).

    jimicos,
Go back and check again…consecutive is the key word. The Packers have been around alot longer, and played in many more games.
and i went back and checked on division titles. I have always thought the record was 20, but I can only count 19…still a record, though.

Your reading comprehension leaves a bit to be desired. I’m a Packers fan. I was tearing apart the post of a Cowboys fan.

Yes, I know consecutive is the key word. According to ESPN, the Packers have sold out EVERY home game since 1960. That’s 38 years. 39 years x 8 home games = 304 games.
We were both originally wrong about division titles. 19 is correct. I used wikipedia as an easy source for the NFC champions. They incorrectly list the Giants as NFC East champs in 2007.
I still don’t know whether 19 division titles is a record or not. I read Pittsburgh has also won 19, but I’m too lazy to check it. Either way, division winners did not exist prior to the “modern era”. So years 1921-1960 or so are not in play in terms of division titles.
Anyway, my point is that at least half of your stats were wrong. And the fact that you posted them just confirms the result of the survey.

    jimicos,
Consecutive, as in playing in 160 straight games that are sold out. home and AWAY. The fact that they sell out away games supports my point that no matter if you hate or love them, people flock to see them, from San Diego to Buffalo. Green Bay has a VERY loyal fan base, but they are extremely regional compared to the Cowboys. I have always had much respect for the Packer organization and their fans, They are classy, but do the Packers sell out Arizona or Jacksonville?
I also thought for fun, I would list my opinion of the 5 classiest and prideful organizations and their fans.
    Cowboys
    Packers
    Steelers
    Bears
    Redskins(even though I hate them)

By the way, which 1/2 are wrong? I was 1 off on div. titles. Is that 1/2 where you are from? Maybe it is and Im a dumba$$. Down here we dont get much education.LOL

EaGirls??? Thats cute…I hate the Eagles just as much as anyone, but can you at least be clever?
p.s.-I bet Kordell Stewart and McNabb make out on Saturdays before gamedays.
