Marty B responds to criticism of his "Black Olympics"

On Sunday, Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star criticized Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett for a YouTube video featuring the “Black Olympics,” a competition between Bennett and his brother involving the eating of fried chicken and watermelon and the drinking of Kool-Aid.

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com also ripped Bennett.  “Somewhere W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Ralph Ellison and Dr. Huxtable are rolling over
in their graves
,” Freeman wrote.

Bennett addressed the situation on Monday during an appearance on ESPN 103.3′s The Michael Irvin Show.  The second-year reserve tight end claims he was just having some innocent fun.

I don’t really think it’s offensive,” Bennett said, via Richard Durett of the Dallas Morning News.  “It depends on your sense of humor and how you look at things.  We were just having fun and it was very funny for me and my brothers, when I look at it I just can’t stop laughing.  If someone takes offense, I apologize.  That wasn’t my intention.  It was just us having fun.”

He claims that he wouldn’t be offended if a white person had made the “Black Olympics” video, which might cause some neutral observers to question whether Bennett is qualified to, say, drive a car.

“There’s white comedians that do stuff like that all the time,” Bennett said.  “I think it’s funny to attack stereotypes.  It’s funny how people just put people in a certain light and say that’s what all the people do of a certain race or particular person, so it’s fun to attack those stereotypes.”

Bennett also addressed the question of whether he should be goofing around off the field until he proves himself on the field.

“Every time I step on the field, I do something meaningful,” Bennett said.  “I’m the blue collar guy.  I do a lot of stuff I don’t get credit for.  Every day I work on my game.  Every day I’m becoming a better player.  I would tell them, ‘You can say what you want to say, but you don’t see me working hard at practice.’  They think I’m at home doing nothing, which is none of their business actually.  Don’t worry about me until football season.  If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”

Regardless, Bennett doesn’t expect his questionable attempt at humor to impact his football career.

“The first time I got in trouble because I was cursing and I had the Cowboys helmet on,” Bennett said, referring to the fine that was imposed by the team for his profane (and inane) rap video.  “Now it’s just me doing me.  It’s no different if I was being a standup comedian at a show.”

But that was Whitlock’s point.  Bennett isn’t a comedian.  He’s an athlete.  And so he lacks the license and the skill to publicly poke fun at stereotypes.  When he does, it potentially desensitizes the public to such behavior, making it potentially acceptable for anyone who says or does something offensive to hide behind the notion that he was “just having fun,” or that he’s hoping to become the next Carrot Top.

Oh please. “Lacks the license”? So now, just “approved” people can speak their minds or poke fun at things? Athletes aren’t approved, apparently.
Isn’t it about time that people… regardless of their race or occupation … can poke fun at each other without the Offended Class getting, well, offended.
Go for it, Martellus. Have fun, enjoy life, dude.

I am black and I was not offended. These sports hacks are just sucking up to their white bosses so they will look good. Yea I said it , So bite me if you don’t like me ! Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence and a host of black comics say far worse that this . So these two suckups need to shut up and watch some BET , If their blackness can handle it !!

so… where are these “skill schools”? how does one “get a license” to poke fun at stereotypes or themselves or someone else? why should only so-called comedians, most of whom arent funny anyway, get to have all the fun?
welcome to another episode of “mike florio, thought police”!

Where do you get a license for comedy? It is a stereotype, get over it. Its the same as two white guys having a marathon of wife beater t-shirts and nascar, or hispanics and eating the most bean burritos. Maybe I am desensitized because I just don’t see the big deal.

  8. Jungle Juice says: Jul 14, 2009 11:07 AM

C’mon. It’s just joking about stereotypes of what his own race may eat. Just like someone might joke that as a Jewish person, they eat bagels or a German eats Kraut, Asian eats rice etc. Harmless fun and I’m sure no one was offended.

Are you kidding me? This is a kid folks! Just a kid “having fun” . . . . . . and for me that’s OK.
Watch the video. These kids were obviously having a ball. I thought it was hilarious.
Are you saying here that only professional comedians are allowed to have fun? Give me a break!!
Oh, and if this is offensive, is it any less offensive for Bennett to make this video than it is for Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and on and on and on to make the same type of comments/videos etc. about white people? Why is it that that’s OK but, by God don’t EVER poke fun at black people – EVEN IF THE ONE POKING FUN IS BLACK!!
Oh, I forgot, he’s not qualified to have fun.
    Give me a break.
Good thing he didn’t make fun of homosexuals or lesbians. Our wonderful country is on the brink of making THAT a crime.
    Give me a break!
Go for it M.B. You’re rich and young making a living playing a game. Have all the fun you can grab. Life’s way too short to do otherwise.

Pull that stick out of you butt Florio. Bennett is allowed to have fun just as much as the next guy, and by the way what qualification do you need to be a comedian, is there a B.A. offered at the local college? Sterotypes are fun to attack and i think that in doing so it has the oposite effect that Whitlock and you are suggesting. I’m white, actually Irish/Italian and i love fried chicken and watermelon as much as the next guy, and I’m constantly messing with my black friends about those sterotypes, just like they do with me when imitating a white guys voice ( see martin lawrence , chris rock , etc…) stop taking things so seriously.

In some sense, he has a point. How many people associate black people with the word yo, or rap music. When someone is “acting black” don’t they just start saying yo, turn their hat backwards and start talking in ebonics? Really can’t ignore all of that and then make Marty B out to be some sort of deviant or act like he is desensitizing people when the media and everyone else does it all of the time given their indication of what black people are supposed to act/talk/dress like.

  18. RexRyan'sStressedLapband says: Jul 14, 2009 11:20 AM

So if you aren’t a professional comedian, making jokes is inappropriate? That makes no sense at all. Maybe if we would stop being so stuck up and sensitive to race, it would actually go away, Mike. It isn’t like he had them get arrested at the end, or pistols stuffed in their waistband, so who did the “Black Olympics” hurt? Chris Rock cracks jokes about blacks all the time, and I think it’s funny as hell. Even the friends I have who FIT some of those stereotypes laugh. Exactly what topics are fair game for us non-professional comedians? Can I talk about the chicken crossing the road, or is that stereotyping chickens as road crossers?
Your last paragraph makes you sound like those two reverend jokers who jump on every issue and call it racist.
And by the way, this Freeman character should really check up on Mr. Huxtable, he’s not dead.

  19. duckworth says: Jul 14, 2009 11:21 AM

“Bennett isn’t a comedian. He’s an athlete. And so he lacks the license and the skill to publicly poke fun at stereotypes.”
Why does Bennett need to be a comedian to rip stereotypes? Stereotypes need to be constantly ridiculed at all times in all places to ensure no one really thinks they fit who they pretent to discribe. And the people who don’t get the joke, and think that’s how black people are, well they are just racist and or ignorant. (not finding the joke funny is another matter as an individual’s sense of humour is all relative)
Also i truely doubt W.E.B. DuBois would be rolling over in his grave, more like concerned that a black person ridiculing stereotypes about black people has caused people to rise in uproar.
“it potentially desensitizes the public to such behavior, making it potentially acceptable for anyone who says or does something offensive to hide behind the notion that he was “just having fun,”"
How is a black man ridiculing stereotypes about black people offensive?

  22. jonnyd34 says: Jul 14, 2009 11:26 AM

I think it would be hilarious if if me and some of my friends had some blacklympics. In addition to the stuff mentioned above, there would be the ‘fastest blunt rolling contest,’ the quickest liquor store hold-up, and then we’ll see who can nail the most over-wieght white women…..

  23. DcNinerFan says: Jul 14, 2009 11:27 AM

I’d say considering the MASSIVE amounts of rap songs, black comedians, etc. that use white, latin and asian stereotypes in their media, this has to be the stupidest criticism I’ve ever seen. People are wound up so tight that they snap at the slightest thing, either unintentionally or intentionally, aimed at black people… It could be the most innocuous of statements and the next thing you know its blown so far out of proportion that so called “leaders” of the black community are calling for the stripping of the “offenders” livelihoods… The media is doing more harm than any of these so called “offenders” by taking something that should be settled quietly without fuss and turning it into something that gets more press than the Iraqi war effort… Media = Mass Hysteria = Happy Media Execs

Yeah that sounds like the same kind of criticism a lawyer who’s trying to be a journalist in his spare time would hear.
I think there’s plenty of room for people to express multiple facets of their personality.
If Dave Chapelle did this same thing, with the same content and delivery, we’d all be calling him a genius for having the guts to confront and discuss the preconceived notions we have about each other due to race. I mean, it really does sound like a Dave Chapelle sketch.
Bennet sounds like a creative guy stuck in a profession where being different makes other players look at him funny. It’s a locker room mentality and I’m suprised you hold that viewpoint.

I’d have to go along with Bennett on this. If we’re EVER going to get beyond racism, then everyone has to start being a little less sensitive as time goes on. I never really understood the offensiveness of this particular sterotype anyway – heck, I’m white and I like watermelon, fried chicken and kool-aid as much as any black person, so what’s the big deal, especially since Bennett was having fun showing how ridiculous this stuff is, when we perpetuate the offensiveness of the stereotype rather than the utter absurdity that the stereotype exists in the first place?

  31. FleamarketHustler says: Jul 14, 2009 11:45 AM

I may or may not disagree with that opinion but I certainly will accept it as your opinion. The problem is you want to qualify who can cross certain lines and who cannot. Is a comedian allowed to make these jokes from the beginning of their career or do they have to wait until they have impressed upon you their skill. Please let me know who’s been vetted and who hasn’t I really think it’s important that the world knows who’s allowed to do what in your opinion.

  46. TransplantedFan says: Jul 14, 2009 12:14 PM

I don’t know. I can definitely see how a lot of people would be offended, and I kind of doubt his point that if a white comedian were to do it it wouldn’t be offensive. But isn’t the point of youtube to give people who don’t have the license or skill to do something a forum to do it in? While I think “Marty B” is a bit of a clown, he has every right to use YouTube in a way that doesn’t violate YouTube’s terms of use. I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts you could find a lot more racist, xenophobic, anti-semetic, bigoted stuff on youtube then a guy and his brother goofing around.
Also, we should all be so lucky if the players on our team were as ripped as Carrot Top. Have you seen the guy? He’s turned into a roided out body builder.

  47. JoeSchmoe says: Jul 14, 2009 12:16 PM

I’ve been a backer of yours Florio, but there is no such thing as a “comedic license”. And if there was, just about every one of your articles here would be in violation of the “you’re not allowed to do anything outside what you’re paid to do” code… Mr. Lawyer/Blogger who thinks he’s also funny sir.
Jason Whitlock is a Class A D-Bag along the lines of Skip Bayless. Loud for the sake of being loud. Just because Bennett’s business card says “athlete” instead of “comedian” doesn’t mean that the guy can’t do whatever the hell he pleases, including poke fun at a stupid stereotype. I’ve never once seen any of a plethora of black friends I have either A) eat watermelon, or B) mix up some kool-aid. The chicken? That may be a little more common, but it is for my white a$$ just as it is any black guy too. It’s always been a stupid stereotype though and Bennett’s right… don’t act like white people don’t poke fun at white people, etc…
Get over yourself Whitlock and anyone else who wants to say that Bennett is painting himself into an ignoramus light. From the sounds of it, I think he’s addressed this sufficiently. And… he is indeed a good TE. We’ll see that this year even moreso when Romo has to look to him and Whitten more because of a subpar WR corps.
    -Sincerely,
Not even a Bennett or Cowboy fan

Whitlock is a typical race-baiter. Anything said by anybody that doesn’t conform to his political correctness is loudly condemned by him. It’s because of people like him that honest communication between blacks and whites hardly exists. Bennett’s antics “desensitizes” the public? Give me a friggin brake. Bennett’s antics were hilarious. We actually need more of such antics to lighten the tension caused by hacks like Whitlock. If we could all lighten up and laugh at ourselves the racial climate would improve. You politically correct hacks actually hurt relations.

“This guy is just an idiot. What more do you need to say? He is getting paid very well to play a sport that most of us dreamed of doing at this level and just doesn’t get it.”
What does that mean? Since he can play at that level, he’s not allowed to do anything else? Why is he an idiot in your eyes for having a little bit of fun on youtube? He’s not fighting dogs, smoking crack, getting busted with tranny hookers, throttling anybody in Denny’s, sipping lean in a parking lot, driving while intoxicated, beating his woman, breaking into anybody’s house, betting on football, smuggling drugs, killing other people, screwing underage girls, fathering multiple children with multiple women, cheating on his wife, cheating on his mistress, throwing any teammates under a bus, etc.

You opened up a can of worms Florio. Actually, closer to snakes. With venom. Maybe you should stick to, you know, just the facts and leave personal opinion of a non-football nature at home. Or create another blog, and call it something like “NBC-Liberal-Agenda-Talk.com. I’m sure you’d get a ton of nut jobs going there, screaming racism at raccoons and trying to kill all cows for greenhouse gas emition, or whatever crazy stuff liberals do…

People like Jason Whitlock are what is wrong with this country these days. He acts like he is ashamed to be black and so he takes it out on anyone who is not politically correct in his world. Back in the 70′s, when All In The Family, The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son were on TV, we all, white, black or hispanic, would get a big laugh out of something like this. Whitlock needs to get a reality check and shove some fried chicken in his fat piehole!

  57. CardHock says: Jul 14, 2009 12:53 PM

Jason Whitlock is the biggest hack in sports journalism. Period. Who gives a &%$ what that guy has to say about anything. Hes always getting involved in this racial crap in sports now because hes looking for the spotlight. If you want to look at a living stereotype its Jason Whitlock, the man wouldnt have a job in the business if he was white, because he can’t write.

  58. VoxVeritas says: Jul 14, 2009 12:54 PM

“Bennett also addressed the question of whether he should be goofing around off the field until he proves himself on the field.”
I wonder how many NFL TE’s could catch 20 passes and 4 TDs playing behind Jason Witten?

  59. VoxVeritas says: Jul 14, 2009 1:05 PM

“So glad Green Bay took Finley over this guy…”
They didn’t take Finley over Bennett. Bennett was long gone by the time the Packers drafted Finley. Finley’s another guy with multiple kids from multiple mothers.

  60. footballnut says: Jul 14, 2009 1:15 PM

Florio, why are you and Whitlock so uptight about this? People joke about stereotypes of others and of their heritage all of the time…it’s funny lighten up.
And when the hell do you need to be licensed to make jokes about races?
You’re getting beat up bad on this one Florio. I didn’t think anyone could get Jets, Pats, Boys, Eagles fans, etc. to all agree, but you did it.
Did the peacock bite you this morning?

  61. zygi milf says: Jul 14, 2009 1:24 PM

Vox gets a 5 for each of his comments.
The more I read about Bennett, the more I like him. This country could use more people like him, instead of the PC whiners and the “nanny” government leaders that we have.

  62. jkorn1818 says: Jul 14, 2009 1:25 PM

Bill Cosby is dead? why would he roll in his grave.
Sorry, didn’t mean to make that joke, I know i dont have a license to be funny.

  63. hooky40 says: Jul 14, 2009 1:28 PM

Why do people feel the need to take everything so seriously? Marty B is a kid having fun, Whitlock has a stick up his ass. Leave the guy alone already, no one is forcing people to watch his youtube videos. Also, to compare what Marty B has done to taking away from what Dr King, Dubois, and Malcolm X have done is the most assinine statement I have ever heard….next to throwing in Dr Huxtable (who isn’t even a real person). Lighten the F up and learn to take a joke for a joke Whitlock.

  64. spartyfi says: Jul 14, 2009 1:34 PM

Florio, he’s a lot closer to being a real comedian than you are to being a real journalist! Give up now while you still can!

I am a HUGE EAGLES fan and if there is one thing I can’t stand is anyone that plays for the Cowboys, that being said Bennett is now one of my favorite players. Give me a break!!!

Mike, I’m typically with you on most issues. And I really appreciate your site. But you’re wrong on this one.
It’s refreshing to hear Marty B joke about the fried Chicken, Watermelon and Kool Aid stereotype. You and Whitlock are being too darn serious. It’s not a problem until people like you 2 make it a problem.
I’m Italian and I’m always making jokes about our ways and my loud obnoxious and overly emotional family and friends.
Believe it or not, Marty’s type of humor breaks down racial barriers. In fact after reading this I wish he was one of my NY Giants.

    Great talent.
    Not too smart.
    Lacks focus.
Needs a strong influence in the locker room.
    Not Wade. Not Jerry.

Maybe people should stop complaining about this and its effects on their kids and sit down with the kids and explain what’s right and what’s wrong with this video. People it isn’t the media’s fault its the parents who can’t control their kids.

If the purpose of this article was to get people to comment then congratulations you suceeded.
I understand that it’s summer and there’s not much to write about at this time , but if you plan on keeping up with this kind of crap writing during the season you will have one less member of the PFT nation.
I suggest doing what you have done in the past……when there isn’t anything new to write about then shut it down until there is. Perhaps you need a vacation at one of those body detox spas, maybe they will be able to yank that stick out of your A$$

  72. Kidekk says: Jul 14, 2009 2:24 PM

Is anyone else confused when Florio seems to have these momentary lapses and writes things that are so outlandish they leave you scratching their head, given some of what he writes on this very site? Are there two Mike Florios?

  73. surefooted says: Jul 14, 2009 3:38 PM

And how is this different when you make jokes about Christians (or other religions)?
    Should we pull your card?

  74. hotchick says: Jul 14, 2009 4:37 PM

    Gamedays Decathalon rocks!
When everyone can joke and make fun of each other and themselves without the wimps of the world crying about being offended, then we will be getting somewhere with finally fixing our “racist” problem. To get there we need to start allowing people to have fun without wimps crying about “licenses” or worrying about idiots taking it the wrong way.

  76. Opie says: Jul 14, 2009 5:50 PM

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN! You’ve done it now, Mr. Florio, sir. I can’t stand the Cowgirls and now you’ve got their fans and our fans (Eagles)agreeing?!?
You fargin’ icehole, I neva forgeta face, you rat bastage!
If my fingers weren’t so greasy, from the Popeye’s fried chicken, I’d pour my black cherry kool-aid all over this screen!
Start a poll: best friend chicken by state…..

That is the funniest thing I have heard all week!!!
and the reason that the black olympics are funny is because where I’m from its true. Maybe in West Virginia black people get offended by this but here on the Louisiana Texas line, they are proud of this and will tell you.

What’s next for Bennett and his brother…making fun of lynchings and cross burnings?
