Matt Cassel and the Chiefs beat the deadline for franchise players to reach a long-term contract. [Editor's note: Thanks for reading the site, Gregg.] Julius Peppers and the Panthers aren’t likely to follow suit.
With less than 24 hours to go, the Charlotte Observer writes that “indications strongly point to no new contract” for Peppers.
Peppers doesn’t appear to be in any rush to get a deal finished. He’s open to negotiating with the team, but is scheduled to make $16.683 million in 2009.
The Panthers will be put in another difficult situation next offseason if no deal is reached. Another franchise tag in 2010 would cost them more than $20 million.
If nothing else, Carolina knows they will get Peppers’ maximum effort as he starts another contract push. It worked for them last year.
Jerry Jones.
Make it RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dustin…….Is the propane leaking in the trailer? Did you think this story was about DeMarcus “Where”?….Scary Jerry hasn’t signed one of his dollar store draft picks yet. “Where” has yet to sign long term, but you want the cash strapped skelator to sign Peppers? Perhaps, if you pony up 20 bucks to tour an empty building, pay 40 bucks to park, the pot of gold will be at the end of the rainbow…
I think there may be several key figures in the organization who have “one-and-done” written all over them. This is a bubble year, and I would be shocked if Pep signs anything other than an autograph or two down in Spartanburg.
Get your run on, Pep! Spartanburg heat!
Why would he want to sign a long term deal? Everything is in his favor. Even if, God forbid, he were to suffer a career ending injury, whatever $16.6 mil is after taxes would be more than enough for him to set up a life after football. That’s not counting the money he should have been saving from before. I wouldn’t be in a rush either.
Come on man, you’re talking about an NFL player and celebrity. Is any amount of money ever enough? The Redskins have screwed everybody by signing a defensive tackle to a $100 million dollar contract. Not only is that ridiculous but it sets a precedent for the type of money top D-linemen will demand now. Peppers isn’t worth that or the money we will be paying him this year. I’m a diehard Panthers fan and naturally love Peppers, but I got to be honest. We all just sit around making excuses for why he doesn’t produce the numbers he has the ability to. I lost faith when he claimed his 2.5 sack season was the result of him not wanting to outshine Rucker before he retired. That’s just stupid, and while he has in the past made extraordinary plays, he is not even close to being as good as all of us like to make him out to be. He’s over-rated, but nevertheless still vital to a defensive line that isn’t what it used to be.
Puh-leeze. Sick and tired of all the stupid and ridiculous salaries being paid to these ego maniacs. Julius Peppers reached his peak about 2 years ago and hasn’t been the same since. Man he don’t deserve to make as much as I make. NFL just stop all the stupidity right now!
