Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat writes that one of the primary reasons the 49ers acquired Carolina's 2010 first-round pick was to get in "ideal position" should they be in the market for a quarterback.
The 49ers thought that Carolina's schedule looked very difficult on paper and it would be tough for to repeat their 12-4 record. (Hard to argue there.) With two first-round picks, San Francisco will likely have enough ammunition to target another quarterback, should they need one.
The 49ers hesitance to fully invest their future in Hill and Smith is wise and not surprising. After all, they went hard after Kurt Warner in the offseason.
If either Smith or Hill emerge as The Man this season, everyone is happy.
If not, the 49ers will be positioned to dive into an intriguing crop of quarterbacks that could include impressive underclassmen prospects Sam Bradford and Jevan Snead to go with seniors Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy.
Colt McCoy would have been the top QB in this class had he declared. If the 49ers really are targeting him, it's a smart long-term strategy.
McCloughan is demonstrating why Bill Parcells seriously considered him for the Dolphins GM job.
Good plan..., to position your organization to pay top tier money for the most inexperienced person to drive your team. Well..., it worked out pretty well last time.
Good quarterbacks the 49ers have had:
Joe Montana: 3rd round pick
Steve Young: Supplemental pick, and subsequent flameout before studying under Joe
Jeff Garcia: Signed out of the CFL.
Terrible quarterbacks the 49ers have had:
Jim Druckenmiller: 1st round pick
Alex Smith: 1st round pick
Trent Dilfer: 1st round pick (of another team, but still)
Yeah. They definitely should draft one in the 1st round next year. That will work out well for them I'm sure.
McGloughan has been mostly terrible in his short stint as the 49ers' GM. Even poorer is Colt McCoy's arm strength. There's absolutely no way he would've went higher than Stafford or Sanchez. McCoy's shoe-string passes won't work in the NFL.
McCoy's draft stock will plummet this season. Count on it.
@ Desides- McCoy isn't even a great QB prospect let alone the top QB in a draft class. He would have been the 4th QB in this past draft and will be about the same in this upcoming draft.
The Niners have their QB of the future on the roster right now. Nate Davis from Ball State is going to be a stud at the pro level and all Niners fans will soon find this out.
Good day.
Tim Tebow sucks. He might play for a year or two, but he'll wear out quick after getting hammered by NFL Safeties and Linebackers. I predict he lasts a shorter and less productive time than Tim Couch.
Tebow might make a mediocre pro football QB...might, but Jevan Snead is a bad bad man.....he will do big things on the next level. Ole Miss doesn't get too much TV air time, but if you get a chance to watch them it is worth it just for Snead.
The Eagles thought they were getting a top 5 pick from Carolina last year. We see how that worked out. Probably 7-9 or 8-8, so picking 12-16 range.
Too funny because using this logic Seattle can look for their next franchise QB when they get Denver's top 10 pick next year meanwhile Denver get's Chicago's later first round pick.
screaming sheep, but they can package a 12-16 pick with their own top 10 pick to move up into the top 5, if they were so inclined.
@MNRunLeft
He was the consensus top QB at the end of the college season. Had he declared for the draft, he would have been the first QB off the board, without question. Stafford would have fallen in a manner almost reminiscent of Brady Quinn.
If that's the 49er's plans I hope Bradford is available to them because he's gonna be the only worthwhile one. Though I haven't seen Jevan Snead so maybe he could cut it as an NFL QB I'm not sure. But Tim Tebow is Alex Smith. They both run the same offense and are/were coached by the same person. Tebow will do as well as Alex Smith has done at QB. Tebow needs to switch positions if he wants to succeed at the next level. Colt McCoy is along the same mold as Tebow but not as physically tough.
As a Cardinals fan (and not just a bandwagoner), I fully support the 49ers to target either Tebow or McCoy next year. Please, for the love of god, do it, and trade away both your #1's to move up for either of them.
TFBuckFutter...
Steve Young was picked in the first round of the supplemental draft by the Bucs, which means they gave up a first round pick the following year. He threw 11 TD's and 21 INT's in his first season in Tampa Bay.
... I didn't know there were so many qualified scouts out there. Hang in there guys. Once the economy picks up there will be job openings in the NFL for you.
I have news for the 9ers, if they want to have a successful quarterback, try having the a good offensive coordinator and having him stay for more than a season. We will never know how good Joey Harrington or Alex Smith etc could have been under more stable conditions, when you spend the first 3-4 years learning a new system every year and looking out your ear hole at the end of every play, its hard to develop.
Big M, I recognize that. He was terrible for the team that drafted him, then spent some time riding the pine, then lived up to his potential.
How does that change my point about the 49ers having terrible luck with QBs they draft in the first round?
The Centurion, We hear that a lot of defense of average-to-bad QBs....but I have yet to see someone point to a QB who went from average-to-bad to very good once they were "in the right system". Not saying it hasn't happened....but certainly not recently (Young maybe? 20 years ago).
TFBuckfutter, the point is that Young was a first round talent that might have panned out with Tampa had they simply done what Bill Walsh did with him. The reason I point that out is that Alex Smith's career resembles Steve Young's early years in the NFL thus far, which isn't good. However, would it be fair to think that Smith in his fifth or sixth year could redeem himself like Young did when he became the starter in his seventh? Considering that Young got to see firsthand the difference between playing on a horrible team and then having the opportunity to learn under a great coach on a good team, I think that Young himself has been unreasonably unfair in his assessments of Smith.
"TFBuckfutter, the point is that Young was a first round talent that might have panned out with Tampa had they simply done what Bill Walsh did with him."
Oh, you mean put him on the same team as Jerry Rice and John Taylor and let him sit around for like four years and learn behind Joe Montana. Yeah, how stupid of the Bucs to not do that.
P.S. Young was with the Bucs for two seasons.
I think we should back off the QBs for a little bit and use those two first round picks to get that safety from USC Taylor Mays. This guy is the safety that we have been looking for for years. At 6'3" and 230 pounds he is a physical freak. He is fast and huge. By far one of the most physical safeties I have seen in a long time. He can help us more than anyone of those QBs.
