Niners planning "green" stadium

There used to be a time when, with the exception of cash money, green was not a desirable color.  Bread that went uneaten for too long turns green.  Sick folks are described as "green in the gills."

Within the past few years, however, "green" is the new gold.  Everyone aspires to be "green," even if many of us don't quite know what that means.

The new stadium that the 49ers are plotting in Santa Clara supposedly will be the greenest NFL venue ever made

And we assume they mean "green" in a good way.

Specifically, the structure will have a plant-covered roof (again, not clear whether that's good or bad), and it will include "environmental enhancements" like solar panels, high-efficiency plumbing, and recycled and local building materials.

That said, officials haven't decided on whether the playing surface will consist of real green or fake green.

And, frankly, that's the only "green" about which NFL fans really care.

Dead wrong florio. Many fans on here may only care about the grass as "green" but believe me when I tell you the only way we as a species survive is if we drastically change the ways we live especially in America live. I would have called this hippie crap and all that even a few months ago but after studying abroad in Germany and being pounded by overwhelming scientific facts on the subject I am a true believer in this green stuff, just because it is the only way we can sustain ourselves. We are probably already screwed but at least "going green" gives this over populated planet a chance.

Well, its gonna be in Santa Clara, not frisco.

green costs too much money. osamabama just cant decide what is economical. he may try to ram thru more bullshit laws, but that doesnt make stuff economical or sensible.

There is always one guy in a crowd that can manage to clog a low flow toilet.

Solar panels add lots of expense and very little benefit. They are a typical boondoggle over expensive thing governments screw taxpayers on fashionable over cost effective.

Recycled plastic stadium seats again cost more than regular plastic ones.

In short this is why San Francisco has some of the highest taxes in the nation.

Just when I thought our culture was starting to get smarter, I am reminded of how dumb we continue to be. There's nothing "gay" about being concerned about the environment. It doesn't make you any less of a man to be thrilled about a new stadium that is concerned about being environmentally friendly. I can't wait until the generation of males on this planet dies off that thinks this is a "gay" or "fruity" thing. The only thing "fruity" here is your inability to get with the times.

Other than how much "green" it will cost to see a game.

Just because it is printed doesn't mean it is close to coming true. They might as well plan to build in Fantasyland, because the Santa Clara voters are going to shut this down.

    Next stop LA, baby.

  11. WeMissYouDan says: July 15, 2009 6:19 PM

    hmmmm here's an idea.

Plants on the roof, you say? Cali does allow medicinal marijuana. Why not grow some "medicinal" plants up there and go green while making a little green. As an added bonus, the next time Mikey is contemplating dropping his shorts as an example, he can sit on the roof, smoke a phat one, and think about it for a few minutes. Of course, depending on how good the shit is they are growing up there, he may or may not decide to go ahead with the planned team mooning.

  12. Merton Hanks says: July 15, 2009 6:22 PM

Yeah, it was tough moving back to San Fran and having to choose to be gay again, but totally worth it!

  13. Falcon in NE says: July 15, 2009 6:22 PM

If you think about all the potential tax breaks the stadium could get and the potential for long term savings, the money green might be the green the owners are thinking of after all.

  14. Michael H. says: July 15, 2009 6:24 PM

what in the world is wrong with making a building out of recycled materials and using less energy, the latter of which ultimately would save money for whoever is paying the electric bill? How could that possibly be a bad thing?

Funny how some nuts think San Francisco is this awful place and yet far more people from all walks of life seem to love it. Only a few over-politicized gasbags feel the need to act out that way.

  15. 8man says: July 15, 2009 6:28 PM

It's not like colors are usually a good thing.

Companies are failing if they are in "red". If you do something distasteful, it can give you a "black" eye. And no one wants a case of "blue" balls.

Puns behind us, it'll be interesting to see how much "green" this place will cost and how much "green" you'll need to fork over to get in.

  16. SirSuperSouthern says: July 15, 2009 6:30 PM

"Specifically, the structure will have a plant-covered roof (again, not clear whether that's good or bad)"

Trust me, that's good. Most roofs are painted white because white has such a high albedo (reflects lots of sunlight). Try painting it black and see what happens to your electric bill.

Anyway, a plant roof provides a sunlight absorbing canopy that has the added bonus of soaking up rain water too. Environmentalists like that because it helps reduce the amount of impervious cover and rain water run-off.

New York City has discussed mass green roofs because they predict it will lower the temperature inside the city by as much as 5 degrees. As it stands right now, NYC gets noticeably hotter than the surrounding countryside during the day, and at night temperatures don't drop nearly as much. Its a result of waaaaay too much impervious cover (concrete, asphalt, etc).

Don't laugh at the "Green" label just because you associate it with hippies, the benefits of going green are real...

Someone made a comment about how recycled seats are more expensive than new ones.

No sh!t you retard, that's why we are in this mess in the first place. It is definitely more expensive to be less harmful to the planet. It's not a "liberal" agenda either - It's an intelligent agenda.

Where did you retards spore from?

  28. DoomsDayD75 says: July 15, 2009 8:02 PM

They should go the extra mile and have the stadium be powered by the tears of right wing nut jobs.

  29. Alpheratz says: July 15, 2009 8:18 PM

Green is the new code word for "sham" among thinking people.

It's also a code word for "government subsidy money".

All you altruistic types need to gain a few I.Q. points and follow the money.

    Greenies are communists.

  31. craiger902 says: July 15, 2009 8:44 PM

Great idea on the part of the 49ers. The least they could do is use grey water for the toilets. While some may view the green movement as a fad, it's here to stay, whether we like it or not. And I think there are many fans who would appreciate the 49ers opting to build a more environmentally friendly stadium. But this is all just on the drawing board. Whenever they do eventually build a new stadium, hopefully they stick with the green ideas.

  32. The Centurion says: July 15, 2009 8:50 PM

I love it caring about the enviroment is communist, socialist, a scam, a liberal agenda. Whats funny about this is we (we being the intelligent ones of course) laughed at the idiocy of Sarah Palin, many of you are just like her, completely retarded! Its okay becasue many people are looking at you and saying, "hey look at that shit flinging monkey over there." Your the same people that think George Bush was a good President, the Osama Obamas are funny too since Bush & Cheney are the two biggest terrorist in recent memory! Did I just say that? Yes because I can open my eyes even my father is also an ass backwards Republican moron, most of you never think for your self. Oh wait my favorite, Iraq is about freedom, thats a funny way to justify an idiotic decision that gets thousands killed. And Florio dont pretend like you dont like Green, you love it sir. Let the hate begin

GREEN = Subsidized by government...otherwise is not economically viable.

Subsidized by government = Paid for via tax increases on productive citizens.

  34. Radiofriendly420 says: July 15, 2009 9:08 PM

If reducing emissions and helping the government costs me more money in taxes then I am happy to pay them.

I am not a liberal or a republican.

I am intelligent enough to see the value in making efforts to help protect and improve the environment.

Maybe some of you fat sh!ts should be open to the idea of buying a few less twinkies and setting aside some of that extra cash you'll have into providing a better future for this planet? Just a thought. Is it true? The world is more than just you and your right wing agenda? To bad "God" never mentioned protecting the environment, then maybe some of you dumba$$es would pay attention to what is really going on.

  37. Radiofriendly420 says: July 15, 2009 10:43 PM

    Fitz,

I used the word retard because attacking the idea of protecting the environment is retarded.

I am all for paying more money in taxes because I have plenty of it. I only make $34,000 a year but since I don't spend tons of money on food, it's plenty.

Check your waistline - spend some of that fat money on doing good things. Selfish piggy.

  41. VoxVeritas says: July 16, 2009 7:24 AM

"Better than having a parachute for a corporate facility that injures people."

Better than having a team doctor that injures people. Don't think I've forgotten how the 49ers' team doctor tried to inject a painkiller into a players' ribs and ended up puncturing his lung.

The 49ers play in a dump that was damaged in an earthquake and will likely fall straight to the ground during the next one.

  42. Kyanz43 says: July 16, 2009 7:41 AM

When are you liberal followers going to realize that this is all just a scam. You people make me sick. I don't understand why you hate America so much that you want to destroy it by voting for the worst president in our nation's history. Stop looking to the government to solve all your problems and do something with your lives or get out before you can cause any more damage to the country you hate.

  43. Michael H. says: July 16, 2009 8:29 AM

See? In what way is it a political issue to build a building that uses less energy and recycled materials? There is no doubt that American right-wingers are about the absolute dumbest people in the world.

  44. TransplantedFan says: July 16, 2009 9:15 AM

Actually, environmentalism has many supporters across a broad spectrum of political idealogies. Hunters and fishermen are starting to come around to environmentalism because the natural habitats of animals they like to hunt are constantly threatened and Western (Western US, not "The West") water policies of the past decade have led to massive fish kills. Look at Ted Nugent.

There is also a grown core of Evangelists who believe in Creation protection and argue that the Bible commands mankind to be proper caretakers of God's creations.

Moreoever, solar panels would help to reduce the overall energy costs of the stadium. In addition, when the stadium is not in use the excess energy can be fed back into the transmission network. A previous poster has already talked about the advantages of a green roof. And yes, solar energy is expensive, but its mostly due to an artificial run on silicone created by government subsidies in Germany.

Its easy to fling insults around, but its a lot harder to have constructive comments and help fix a growing problem.

  45. VoxVeritas says: July 16, 2009 9:23 AM

Yeah, that must be it, you don't eat much. Are you married? Do you have a girlfriend? Do you own your home? How much do you spend on weed every month? I hope you don't lose your obviously unskilled labor job because Obama makes your employer pay higher taxes.

1850=2 billion people in the world
2009=6.7 billion people in the world
2050=predicted 12-15 billion people in the world
    Check the facts.
The US has 5% of the world's people (305 million) and uses 25% of the world's energy, and is the largest producer of waste in the world. How many generations do you think we can keep up this kind of consumption and waste? How long do you think oil, natural gas, and coal will be able to sustain this kind of growth?
Ignorance, close-mindedness, short sightedness will kill this species and the American way of life.
Global Warming aside, think about the comsumption of resources, food, etc. and the incredible amount of waste. The gravy train won't run forever.
