Should the Hall of Fame change its voting procedure?

Last week, former NFL safety Rodney Harrison suggested that the folks who run the Pro Football Hall of Fame should take the election process out of the hands of sportswriters, apparently because Harrison thinks that the sportswriters won’t grant him admission.

This week, things are still a little slow, so we’re decided to devote a PFTV segment to the subject.

Cue the swanky new NBC video player.

I don’t know if Harrison gets in I can think of other defensive players who aren’t in who do belong in though)
The problem is the committee that puts these people in are all a bunch of offensive honks. The ratio in the HOF has to be like 2:1 in favor of offense.

  2. JSpicoli says: Jul 15, 2009 11:23 AM

Of course they should. Another change is that fans should having nothing to do with All-Star voting in any sport.

    Now the video player works.
Anyways, I’m against guys that get busted for roids or HGH gettin into the HOF. Sucks for Harrison cause he was a pretty damn good safety.

  5. ButchD says: Jul 15, 2009 11:31 AM

    pftv sucks
Harrison was good, but not a HOF. I dont think at any point in his career he was the best safety in the league, at his best was prob only the 4th or 5th best guy in the league at the time.

Although the new NBC player is definitely cleaner, I now have to really think about whether or not I care enough about a topic to press play. I absolutely despise being forced to watch ads on a media player whereas Youtube gets you right to what you wanted. But hey, it’s all a business now, right? Same thing happened to Pandora and it happens on Hulu (but hard to complain there really since they offer so much content).
It’s one reason why TIVO is so incredible. I, like most people I’m sure, usually time my TV watching where I can pass/skip most if not all of the commercials during a broadcast.

  7. Darth Ringo says: Jul 15, 2009 11:36 AM

As with every single video so far, it does not play past 50 seconds on Firefox.
Is anyone looking into a fix? Bueller? Bueller?
I’m starting to wonder if it has something to do with the NBC – Microsoft partnership. I’m sure Microsoft would rather everybody keep using IE.
Since I can’t comment on the video I’ll just say congrats on having a nice car, Mike. That much I heard.

Make a Committee of former Coaches and Players, Like 10 From each Decade, going all the way back, and have them Vote. And change the limit of no more than 6 or something in each class. There are a ton of 70′s and *0′s stars that are being passed over due to the slotting. No Gil Brandt in the Hall? A crime. And I HATE the Cowboys.

Some sportswriters SHOULD be banned, like that talentless fartbag Peter King. For years he voted against Art Monk, and his reasoning was that Monk didn’t have a “signature catch” that could be played endlessly on highlight reels for those with short attention spans. Never mind that he was the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions!!

Another swanky UNWATCHABLE NBC video that gets 25% through then restarts over and over. Please bring back the youtube player.

Rodney Harrison is the only person who thinks Rodney Harrison wasn’t a dirty player. Rodney Harrison is the person who thinks Rodney Harrison led the Patriots to the Superbowl championships and Rodney Harrison is the only person who thinks Rodney Harrison should be in the Hall of Fame. Clown

It’s one thing in baseball to have journalists vote since they study every stat upwards, downwards, sideways, etc. and that game is completely reliant on stats.
However, football is different. Do all of these voters in the media truly understand if a D Lineman missed an assignment, or was he in the right place and the inside LB didn’t hit the gap correctly, thus making the D Lineman look bad?
Just an example of many and I am not so sure they completely understand what truly should be HOF material. Former players, HOF members, a select few journalists who get it, former coaches, those who’ve been in the game one way or the other should have more of a say.
It’s politics now, and biased opinions certainly get in the way much like what was mentioned with King not voting in Monk due to not being ‘sexy’ enough with his catches. That’s garbage and people like King shouldn’t have a say.

  13. Big Stretch says: Jul 15, 2009 12:24 PM

Let players, coaches, scouts,GM both active and retired vote on the best players in the game…..after all Florio, jounalists don’t have a license to assess a sport that they have never participated in.
kind of like Marty B not having a license to participate in anything resembling comedy. isn’t that what you said yesterday.
Of course you want it to stay the same, it gives guys like you a little power over the players, something I’m sure you would have loved in school when the big bad athlete pushed you into a locker….
The reporters getting to vote on the quality of a player’s career is their payback for years of feeling inadequate.
I agree with Harrison about the voting, but still don’t think he should get into the HOF, the same way i don’t think Bonds,Mcguire,Sosa….should be let into the MLB HOF

  14. BUNYAN says: Jul 15, 2009 12:28 PM

I disagree with Florio. Many in the media have agendas. If they don’t like you on a personal level they won’t vote for you even when your performances on the field say otherwise. Case in point. There is no way Kenny “the snake” Stabler should not already been in the HOF. He is being black balled by certain media members because they don’t like him personally. S

There is no way Kenny “the snake” Stabler should not already been in the HOF. He is being black balled by certain media members because they don’t like him personally. Stabler was not one to give many interviews and usually avoided talking to sports writers. Even the sports writer Zimmerman said he will never ever vote for Stabler to get in the HOF. There are QB’s in the HOF that couldn’t hold Stabler’s jock strap for him. Ask Chuck Knoll or Don Shula what they thought of Stabler. Ask any of the players and coaches who played against him. The HOF voting is a joke. Coaches and players from a particular players era should be voting, not the media.

  16. Qoojo says: Jul 15, 2009 12:36 PM

At the very least, there should be an equal amount of defensive and offensive slots to force the voting imbeciles, like Peter King, to add defensive players.

  17. Grkboiler says: Jul 15, 2009 12:37 PM

Harrison is the only player in NFL history to record both 30 sacks and 30 interceptions.
    Enough said.

After waiting 60 seconds for the video to start, and it didn’t, I gave up. Way too long to wait in the internet age.
I think I realise what’s happened – the PFT hamster, having retired when the site switched to its new home, has done a Brett Favre, come out of retirement, and is now ‘powering’ the server that runs the video segments.
Florio – FFS, get it sorted.

Umm….I’ve never read that comment from him, but my guess is that you are wildly misconstruing his point. I doubt he said he didn’t vote for him because of that….In fact, I almost guarentee he was pointing out that not having a solid highlight reel is what is hurting him with other voters, because of their short attention span.

  21. weathersusa says: Jul 15, 2009 1:41 PM

I have a time giving any credibility to Rodney Harrison at all, if only because he has just become a member of the media. He truly speaks as someone who has never visited the Hall of Fame, or even has a clue as to how the election process works. If he had actually taken the time to walk through and see the history of the game through the great inductees, he would have a dramatically different opinion of how players are elected.

  22. houskat says: Jul 15, 2009 1:43 PM

They need an HOF for CryBaby Football Players.
R.H. would be on top of the list….. :)

  23. Darth Ringo says: Jul 15, 2009 1:58 PM

The video doesn’t play more than 50 seconds, and the comment I made asking about it nearly 2 hours ago never got posted.
As I said before, I’m starting to think there’s a genuine anti-Firefox bias at this site because of the Microsoft-NBC partnership.
    Please fix non-IE browser functionality.

I dunno about changing the HOF voting procedure but I think the PFT censorship procedures need to be looked at.

  26. Display Name says: Jul 15, 2009 2:38 PM

Harrison was and is a total P.O.S., He doesn’t deserve to get into the HOG. Maybe the HGH HOF but not the Pro-Football HOF.

  27. saturn111 says: Jul 15, 2009 2:48 PM

Did Rodney Harrison really put together the phrase “football archeologist?”
I agree that the writers should keep doing it, but I also think there has to be a more strict screening process in place, one that weeds out writers who aren’t as knowledgeable about the history of the game as they should be, and also weeds out writers with personal axes to grind against individual players who are Hall-worthy.

  28. hitnbombs28 says: Jul 15, 2009 3:50 PM

The process should change> Not so much to help Harrison to get in but other deserving individuals that get passed over because they we not very friendly with the Press.
Take Cris Carter for instance. Although he may have been a d**k, you can’t deny the fact that he put up great #’s. His stats dwarf those of Michael Irvin but he still gets snubbed by the sports writers while Irvin got in.
    Rec Yds TD
    Carter 1101 13899 130
    Irvin 750 11904 65
Irvin has SB rings but thats comes from the benefit of playing on a great team with a HOF QB, RB, and a few OL’s. Carter had the pleasure of catching passes from Wade Wilson and other mediocre QB’s for most of his career.

  29. tj.52 says: Jul 15, 2009 4:08 PM

I will stick with my previous comment:
until there comes a “writer” who can break down the game with the knowledge and skill of a coach or player, “writers” should not be allowed to determine HOF entry.
If you don’t know what they are doing, how the hell do you know who is the best?
Plus – Ron Borges. C’mon, Ron freakin Borges. Gimme a break.

  30. islebfrank says: Jul 15, 2009 4:09 PM

I knew it was broken when Kenny Anderson didn’t get voted in, over and over again.
He led the NFL in passing 4 times and was the NFL MVP once. I get tired of hearing the excuse that he never won the Super Bowl. It wasn’t his fault they didn’t beat the 49ers.
Compare Anderson’s stats to the existing QB’s currently in the HOF, and he’s better than most.
Look at Joe Namath’s career stats, and they are mediocre at best. He’s in the HOF for predicting a victory over the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl, and not much else.

TFBuckFutter: Here’s what King said about Monk:
“Monk’s the fourth-leading receiver of all time, but I don’t support him because he played 16 years, led his own team in receptions six times, and didn’t strike fear into the opposition. I think a player has to have a combination of impact on a game, historic numbers and longevity. Winning helps. Championships help. He can overcome the longevity stuff by tremendous physical gifts and/or highlight plays for the ages. Gale Sayers did.”
One of his criteria was highlight plays…as if that’s a legitimate reason to get voted into the Hall.

  32. mrmagoo says: Jul 15, 2009 4:29 PM

Dermonti Dawson not getting in on the first ballot and the fact that Michael Irvin got in at all told me all I needed to know about the Hall of Fame.
If Rodney is a Hall of Famer, they’re going to need a new building. The current won’t be big enough to handle anyone who was a starter in the NFL which apparently would be the new criteria. I don’t hate him but evidently I’ve never been as impressed with Rodney as he appears to be.

You’re REALLY synthesizing his words there. His point is that a) only six times was he the best WR on his own team and b) opposing teams didn’t have to plan around him. What about “a combination of impact on a game, historic numbers and longevity” isn’t clear?
You actually don’t understand the last statement at all. He’s saying that if a player doesn’t play long enough, he has to be ridiculously impactful and exciting in a short period of time, a la Gale Sayers. You have misconstrued his point so badly it’s not even funny. In fact, your first statement was “For years he voted against Art Monk, and his reasoning was that Monk didn’t have a “signature catch” that could be played endlessly on highlight reels for those with short attention spans.” That’s why I didn’t recognize the comment, because he never said anything of the sort. The quote you just posted I actually have read.

  34. tmj says: Jul 15, 2009 5:26 PM

Rodney Harrison was very good, but he’s very borderline when it comes to making the Hall of Fame. I don’t think it would be a travesty of justice if he does not get in, nor would it be a horrible choice if he does make it.
As far as the HGH goes, I don’t feel as strongly about that as I do about steroids and baseball players. I know that sounds hypocritical but it’s different sports and different circumstances. In my opinion there is probably a very large percentage of players using HGH. There is no test for it so to exclude Harrison while giving all the others a free pass just doesn’t seem right.
I also wonder if those that want to exclude Harrison because of the HGH issue feel the same way about Shawne Merriman or any of the dozens of other players that have been suspended. I have a feeling that if Merriman continues to play at a very high level there won’t be as many saying that about him when the time comes for his election.

  35. TFBuckFutter says: Jul 15, 2009 5:38 PM

tmj, You make an interesting point about Merriman’s PED use…..if it actually were an issue, though, I could see it keeping a borderline player like Harrison out, while not affecting someone who is beyond qualified. Not saying Merriman is qualified, but if he ends up as a borderline case, it probably should factor in as well.

Those are getting so annoying. I was just trying to show my wife the Redband trailer for Funny People, and one site had a 30 second ad before it. Think about that….they tried to force me to watch an ad….for the pleasure of watching….an ad.

Thanks for buying Florio NBC, now more ADDS, where there werent any.
Cant help but to just turn the video off as soon as the add comes up. These short segments are not worthy of a commercial.
Sorry, but Ive watched whole sitcoms on line with just 2 commercials

Seeing how biased and unprofessional the media have become in all areas, including the sportswriters, maybe it is time to change things a little bit.
