SportingNews.com: Is Mason's surprise retirement a bluff?

NFL_mason1_250.jpgFor our midweek item at SportingNews.com (as previewed last night during a spot with our pal Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio), we take a look at the question of whether the retirement of Ravens receiver Derrick Mason is real.

Frankly, we don't think it is.

Frankly, we think it's a bluff.

The title likely gave that one away, but we needed another paragraph or two in order to make the text longer than the photo of Mason doing what we think he'll be doing again in 2009.

I agree with Cardhock. A whole column about whether Derrick Mason's retirement is for real? I could understand the attention if somebody similar in talent and notoriety to Sanders - who is mentioned in the column - announced a retirement. But Derrick Mason? Really?

After McNair's murder, it's possible that Mason is going through a "more to life than football" phase... or he's fishing for a new contract.

You know... in football, in politics, in court, in society; you would think that people would wake up and stop speculating, start doing and producing truth instead of a bogus column to write themselves a paycheck and have a snark. Anyway, Mason is for the most part sincere and means what he says, but like he said '' I have had a great ride, only thing I haven't done is win a super bowl.'' This is his chance. All the hurt players coming back, including himself; now he actually has 2 arms to work with instead of 1. And that opportunity to walk out into those lights does not come around everyday especially when you are 50, it's now or never. If Mcnair, him and his family as well as yours is the main concern, honor them; suit and boot it for one more season.
