Cowboys receiver Roy Williams says he won't talk to the media

With Terrell Owens exiled to Buffalo, Roy Williams becomes the No. 1 wideout in Dallas.

As Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News points out, Williams’ decision not to speak to the media this season could be evidence of the pressure that he is feeling to perform.

Part of the problem could be that Williams didn’t perform well last year, after arriving in exchange for a Herschel-style boatload of picks and inking a contract worth $9 million per year.

There’s also a chance that Williams is miffed by last month’s report that he didn’t lift weights in Detroit, a contention that Williams denied.

As Taylor points out, if Williams simply doesn’t want to be bothered with talking to reporters, his position is no big deal.  If, however, he can’t stomach criticism or scrutiny that appears in print or on television, his stance might be providing a window into a fragile psyche that won’t survive the spotlight that comes with being a member of the Cowboys.

Either way, we’ve still got plenty of popcorn ready.

“in exchange for a Herschel-style boatload of picks”
    Exaggerate much, Mike?
Certainly a #1 and a #3, with essentially an exchange of 5 spots at the end of the draft (Dallas gave up its 6th for Detroit’s 7th) is comparable to the Herschel deal ( 3 #1s, 3 #2s, 3 #3s + 5 players)
    Yep. Very much alike.

the Joey Galloway trade Dallas made was more “Herschel-style” than the Williams deal.

Told you Taylor was a hack. Now he’s practicing psychology? Stop twisting words and maybe somebody will talk to you, JJT. Until then I hope you get Werdered into obscurity.
    “Herschel-style boatload of picks”
Yeah, sure. The Cowboys got eight draft picks and four players out of the Herschel Walker trade. They traded three picks for Roy Williams and a draft pick from the Lions.

Hope he fails and gets absolutely TORCHED by the media…

How was Roy Williams supposed to be good last year? He came to the Cowboys mid-season. I don’t care how good a player is.., a mid-season trade is going to make it difficult for any player to have a stand-out season. It takes time to learn the new playbook, terminology, become familiar w/ his coaches, players.., especially the QB. With a full off-season, OTA’s, and camp.., I’m sure we’ll find that this is going to be a good move for the Cowboys. Unfortunately…,

So did he tell the media that he wouldn’t be speaking to the media?
    If so, how ironic.

  7. VoxVeritas says: Jul 16, 2009 9:53 AM

Actually he told the media why he wouldn’t be speaking to the media during the season. The season hasn’t started yet, and if you don’t give the media a reason why you’re not going to speak to them they’ll make up their own reasons.

maybe the cowgirls should ask Michael Irvin to come out of retirement, he always knew how to spk with the media.

That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on here. Quit making crazy excuses for Roy Williams. He is average at best and had okay numbers in DET until Johnson came and overshadowed his ass. Roy knows he’ll more than likely not live up to what is expected of him, and he’s using this as an outlet for not talking to the media once he fails. I can see him in the locker room now…
Reporter: So Roy can you explain the reasons behind your struggles?
Roy: (continues getting dressed without responding)
Reporter: Are you going to comment Roy?
Roy: I told you prior to the season I won’t be speaking to the media this season. It was even reported on ProFootballTalk.com…..lmao

Wow- I was thinking someone needed to point out the silly Walker/Willaims comparison, but you have already been schooled.
But instead I wanted to point out that I think you have found your next assistant editor- Jean-Jacques Taylor. With lines like “…could be evidence…” and “…might be providing a window into a fragile psyche…”, how can he go wrong? Since speculation is becoming PFT stock in trade, he should fit right in. Don’t worry Mr. Wilson et al., he can’t be a senior editor because he failed to mention/hammer Brett Favre.

downsouth49er, got anything intelligent to add? I invite you to read Florio’s article again. It says “Williams’ decision not to speak to the media this season”
The guy doesn’t need an excuse to not speak to the media in the first place anymore than you need an excuse to root for a team that has owners that are way more concerned about how much money they make than winning.
P.S. MartyB is better than Vernon Davis.

I am outraged, OUTRAGED, at the fact you appear to be using the mental art of speculation on your blog. In July.
This transgression won’t stand, man. I’ll just take my offseason peepers to another…blog, one that reports all the hard news the NFL season produces. In July.

JJT is a sensationalist. If you check out the “Thursday Morning One Liners”, you’ll notice that JJT is the featured writer for the Cowboys, and takes a Florio/Whitlock stance on Marty B’s “Black Olympics” video.
What’s funny is if you actually watch the video in which Roy says that he doesn’t want to talk to the media this season, he says that he wants the let his play on the field do the talking and that anything that he says (or doesn’t say in this case) is used against him in a negative light. Sort of like this article. Here’s the video right here:

Maybe his “weak psyche” is more of a realization that the present day media is a joke, and takes more of a TMZ approach to journalism. Of course obvious denials of this by columnist is an certainly a sign that they can’t stomach the scrutiny, right?

  17. downsouth49er says: Jul 16, 2009 1:40 PM

Hey Vox who is Marty B? Is he another talented player on the superstar roster of the most overrated team in the league? LMAO

  18. jjared1101 says: Jul 16, 2009 1:48 PM

Vernon Davis – 31 rec 358yds 2td’s (one grounding from the coach)
    Martellus Bennett- 20rec 283yds 4td’s (second string rookie tight-end)

Leave the guy alone. Ok, he sucks but its not like its his fault that Jerry Jones gave away the store to get him sorry ass back in Texas.
He was not a #1 WR for the Lions so why is it such a surprise that he wouldn’t be one for the Cowboys either?
When the playoffs are on the line and you lose 44-6, there are more problems that just overpaying for a WR that can’t get open.

You’re right. It’s not his fault he played for the Lions. He had Jon Kitna and Drew Stanton throwing him the ball. That’s like having David Garrard playing QB for your team.

Once Romo gets some sand in his vagina, won’t Kitna be the one throwing to him again?

“The guy doesn’t need an excuse to not speak to the media in the first place anymore than you need an excuse to root for a team that has owners that are way more concerned about how much money they make than winning.”
The Cowboys are concerned about winning? Really? They didn’t seem too concerned against the Giants in the playoffs two years ago, or the Eagles last season. Tony Romo certainly didn’t seem concerned enough against the Seahawks to hold onto the snap. Jerry Jones certainly seems concerned about winning by trading away his best receiver and paying a king’s ransom for a guy not half as good.
