Del Rio doesn't practice what he preaches

nfl_delrio_250.jpgWe suggest that every member of the Jacksonville Jaguars print this story for upcoming use, in the event that any player on the team misses a meeting during training camp, or thereafter.

The 20th Annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship is being held this week in Lake Tahoe.  (It’ll be televised by our friends at NBC.)

The event typically draws a large collection of some of the biggest names in sports.  NFL players attending the event include Derek Anderson, Ronde Barber, Trent Edwards, A.J. Hawk, Todd Heap, Terence Newman, Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, and Matt Schaub.

Former NFL players who’ll be swinging clubs at things other than their wives and children include Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Jerome Bettis, Richard Dent, Marshall Faulk, John Elway, Dan Marino, Jim McMahon, Jonathan Ogden, Jerry Rice, Mark Rypien, Sterling Sharpe, and Emmitt Smith (who promises to debacle the course).

Current and former NFL coaches participating in the event include Dick Jauron, Ken Whisenhunt, Mike Shanahan, and Jack Del Rio.

One of our moles tells us that there was a mandatory players meeting last night.

And Del Rio is the only one who didn’t show.

So have at it, Jaguars.  Your head coach is a hypocrite.

Florio, usually I defend you from guys trying to look cool by insulting you.
But seriously, this is the dumbest thing you’ve ever posted.

    Shut up.

  3. jonnyrotten says: Jul 16, 2009 2:24 PM

Maybe I don’t get it but a mandatory “players” meeting is mandatory for players only, not coaches.

You didn’t already know Jack Del Rio was full of s–t?
    REALLY?

  5. Bob Nelson says: Jul 16, 2009 2:26 PM

Del Rio’s career has always been about being a jerk. He learned much of it as a player in a jerk organization.
Long ago he should have been banished from the league.
When did lefties stop harrassing him about his environmental record? Chopping tree wood in the locker room, his water usage, etc.??

  6. The Real Shuxion says: Jul 16, 2009 2:27 PM

He should put the ax back in the locker room. That didn’t have any negative consequences.

  7. samh says: Jul 16, 2009 2:27 PM

Of course, you didn’t ask Del Rio for comment, or investigate if there was a reason. He’s never come down on somebody for having a valid reason. You also didn’t mention if you attempted to find out if he had cleared his absence beforehand with someone besides your mole.

i must say, my good man, what on earth does this have to do with favre?

  9. mrf47 says: Jul 16, 2009 2:33 PM

AJ Hawk? Really? That’s great…that’s great. I’ve often wondered what a cromagnon man would look like playing golf.

if you werent in bed with the New Obama Broadcasting Channel this wouldn’t be a story at all on pft…….

  11. jaxBill says: Jul 16, 2009 2:43 PM

He was busy finding an axe and a tree stump for the clubhouse.

  12. UFGraduateJaguars says: Jul 16, 2009 2:44 PM

I am a Jags fan and I could care less about his attendance in the meeting.
What I do care about is how douc hey this article makes you sound. Wont be reading this as much since I know you’re out for our coach.
Also, your opening sentence makes it sound as if every Jags fan wants Del Rio gone. Can you post any credible websites claiming the fanbase wants him gone?
Way to lose your integrity with a fairly new reader!

  13. sg98jags99 says: Jul 16, 2009 2:50 PM

Wow…I didn’t know Del Rio was still a player. Wonder why he didn’t suit up last year?
“mandatory players meeting”……I would agree if it was a mandatory team meeting. This is ridiculous.

  14. Big Vinny says: Jul 16, 2009 2:51 PM

Sure he can handle a golf club, but he can swing an axe?

  15. Big M says: Jul 16, 2009 2:52 PM

    This is stupid.

  16. datdudecelly says: Jul 16, 2009 3:01 PM

Guys, I am pretty sure the mandatory PLAYERS meeting was mandatory for guys PLAYING in the golf “Championship.”

  20. Swank says: Jul 16, 2009 3:12 PM

    @jonny, sg98, et al.
Del Rio is considered a player because he is playing in the golf tournament…that’s who the meeting was for.
    @UFGrad
How does “We suggest that every member of the Jacksonville Jaguars print this story for upcoming use, in the event that any player on the team misses a meeting during training camp, or thereafter,” make it sound like Jags fans want Del Rio out? Oh that’s right, it doesn’t. I understand you Floridians have an ever-so-tenuous grasp of the English language, but wow.

  21. jaxBill says: Jul 16, 2009 3:14 PM

It would have been funnier if Tom Coughlin was five minutes LATE for the meeting.

    you’ve jumped the shark florio

  24. Citizen Strange says: Jul 16, 2009 3:37 PM

Jack Del Rio is a dumb as a pile of rocks and twice as jerky. I guess he keeps his job because he is all of four games over .500 (50-46) after six full seasons in the NFL. Whoopity-friggin-doo.
You know who’s even dumber and jerkier than Jack Del Rio? Mike Singletary. Why the Niners hired him as permanent coach after the pulling down his pants episode defies logic. Are those shenanigans honest to God what the Niners were looking for in a head coach?

  25. UFGraduateJaguars says: Jul 16, 2009 4:03 PM

@Swank I’m sorry but the “ha ha told you so” approach he talks about gives that impression that our fan base would do something like this. I write 5 sentences on a message board in 10 seconds and you grade my writing as if were my doctoral thesis, interesting…. Have fun!!
@Moose Strawman 4356 was my fav class

  26. Robolis says: Jul 16, 2009 4:11 PM

I vote Jack Del Rio should still get more credit for participating in a charity event that 28 other NFL coaches chose to not rather than hassle for missing a meeting for reasons you have no idea why for.
The Jaguars are currently holding their own community golf tournament. Maybe he was at that instead?
I like you Florio, but your articles on the Jaguars are like a knife in the ribs sometimes.

Agreed. Couldn’t of said it better myself. I’ve noticed myself going here less and less ever since July 1st. Unfortunately Florio’s not going to give back the big check NBC gave him to whore out PFT…sad..

  28. Trey says: Jul 16, 2009 4:13 PM

Florio have you ever heard of Tu quoque! Del Rio’s argument is sound for wanting players to participate at mandatory meetings. We are all hypocrites and sinners, which is why God sent His Son to die in our place and receive the punishment for our sin. He doesn’t abrogate God’s Law, but fulfills its requirements. It points us to Jesus who takes our sins upon Himself.

  29. LarryBird18 says: Jul 16, 2009 4:18 PM

Florio Why did you post this you effin moron….what is this amateur hour

  30. purpleguy says: Jul 16, 2009 4:19 PM

AJ Hawk, Derek Anderson, Trent Edwards, Matt Schaub . . . . couldn’t they get good NFL players for that tournament?

  31. sndvl99 says: Jul 16, 2009 4:21 PM

What is wrong with Florio? Does ANYONE throw more stones that this guy. His site has just become vindictive and mean spirited.

  32. ZombieRevolution says: Jul 16, 2009 4:25 PM

I guess I would not be the only one to point out how it was a players meeting. My guess is that a bitter player or assistant out there had an “axe” to grind with Del Rio contacted this site as a way to get back at the coach. Earth shattering….
So much disdain and bitterness to this site now.

  33. Snarky Snide Sniper says: Jul 16, 2009 4:27 PM

    MoFlo,
Del Rio should “practice what he preaches”?
“But we talkin’ ’bout PRACTICE, man.
    I mean, PRACTICE. Come on.”
Seriously, I love to see hypocrites calling out other hypocrites for being hypocritical…now if only Del Rio would call out Florio, the circle would be complete.
It’d be like a ball with a mirrored inside, a perfectly symmetrical vortex of infinitely ricocheting hypocrisy (with Florio at the epicenter, naturally).

  34. J. Clayton says: Jul 16, 2009 4:34 PM

I’m a huge Jag fan – do I need to say more about my disappointment from Florio and this site?
I used to enjoy coming here – not so much anymore.
I think I’ll stick with NFL.com, maybe even espn … and I don’t like either of them!

  35. Kotite says: Jul 16, 2009 4:41 PM

Your mole blows. It seemed like there was more to this story, but there really wasn’t. Not sure I dig the new MetroFlorio.

  36. Fan_Of_ Four says: Jul 16, 2009 4:42 PM

Damn it…I wasted 20 seconds of my life reading this and another 15 responding.

  37. luke1982 says: Jul 16, 2009 4:56 PM

Some of you people are true morons. I believe this story was pretty much sarcasm. He missed the players meeting for the GOLFERS!

  38. More Cowbell says: Jul 16, 2009 5:31 PM

This is more important than most might think – there is a clause in his contract that says if Del Rio misses ANY golf meetings in July 2007 – 2010 he must coach the season for 1/2 of his salary.
When it’s July 16, and you have only sold 37,356 season tickets, you need to save every dollar you can.
Good stuff Florio, we don’t get this on ESPN.

  39. Jeff Smith says: Jul 16, 2009 5:50 PM

Luke1982 is right, some of you people can’t recognize humor and sarcasm when you see it.
I am a huge Jags fan myself. I think Del Rio is a good coach, and yet I laughed at the article.
    Don’t take everything so seriously.

  40. *Legion* says: Jul 16, 2009 7:21 PM

    Florio is a dope.
Not because of this story. The story was funny.
He’s a dope because he should know by now that the average PFT reader is too dumb to understand sarcasm or dry humor.
I know it’s hard to *not* go over the heads of your typical reader, but you gotta try harder, Florio. Ya dope.

  41. mnmaverick says: Jul 17, 2009 2:09 AM

Sorry, Brad Childress still takes the cake.
He’s been like Kevin McHale under Glen Taylor with the Timberwolves. The fact he still has a job despite being a worse coach than all his predecessors is pure folly.

  42. theonlyEAGLESfaniknow says: Jul 17, 2009 8:44 AM

    @ *Legion*
Love ya brother. Mr. Florio should listen to that !!
Maybe those readers who vow to visit less oughta do it. What would Pesci say about you guys, something like “comment section tough guys, eh?”
Get overyourselves, or get a sense of humor, sheesh.
