In the wake of the Washington Redskins landing University of Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the NFL supplemental draft today, general manager Vinny Cerrato said he isn't concerned about Jarmon's positive drug test for a banned substance that rendered him ineligible for his senior year.
Cerrato emphasized that the Redskins are comfortable with Jarmon's character during an interview with local reporters.
"The kid is an articulate kid, has already graduated, is only 21 years old and he made a mistake taking the dietary substance," Cerrato said, according to a transcript provided by the Redskins. "We liked his personality and thought he would fit in with our guys. We talked to Dan [Snyder] and Jim Zorn. Then, they liked him a lot, too, and said that we should do this.
"We knew that we would have to give a third-round pick to get him because we knew that we wouldn't get him if we put in a four because there were too many other teams."
According to Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions planned to put in a bid for Jarmon in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Cerrato indicated that the 6'3," 280-pound Jarmon will be deployed at left defensive end.
"I wouldn't say he is a project," Cerrato said. "I think he will be able to help on special teams right away because he can run so well.
Although Jarmon has 4.79 speed in the 40-yard dash, the Redskins want him to improve his upper body strength. He only posted 19 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press test.
Cerrato pointed out that the Redskins will need to cut a total of three players currently on the roster as they sign their draft picks, including Jarmon.
"The kid is an articulate kid"
Well, at least someone's articulate.
How are supplemental drafted players being compensated? Do they get on the same pay scale as regular drafted players?
Someone should tell them to watch out for dietary supplement users... like Calvin Pace.
Sometimes they contain steroids.
The knuckleheads in the Redskins front office are excited about every player they acquire. Unfortunately for them, most turn out to be a waste of draft picks and/or cap space.
As a Skins fan, its worth a 3rd rounder. Their scouting dep't blows, and they would just waste the pick in some dumb trade so may as well take a shot with this kid.
