Agent: Dolphins want to extend Brown

Ronnie Brown was the subject of trade rumors earlier this offseason that the team dismissed.

Now he might wind up staying in Miami for a long time.

Agent Todd France told the Miami Herald the Dolphins are interested in making a multi-year commitment to Brown. The two sides have started “preliminary” contract talks, and will speak further during camp.

The news may come as a surprise to those who feel Brown hasn’t lived up to his potential as 2005’s second overall draft pick.

The Dolphins appear to recognize the things Brown does well rather than focusing on the things he doesn’t like breaking long plays and topping 300 carries. He’s a rare power back who excels as a receiver and pass protector.

There is little doubt Brown would be a popular target if he hit free agency, and he’s primed for a big season now a year removed from his ACL surgery.

For those Dolphins fans who remain unimpressed, remember that Brown’s selection could have gone far worse.

Cedric Benson and Carnell Williams were also drafted in the top five that season.
