Now that Mike Vick is a free man, look for him to try to get back into the NFL as soon as possible. The fact that training camps begin to open very soon serves only to increase the sense of urgency that Vick surely is feeling.
Calvin Watkins of FanHouse, citing “a source” (as opposed to, we suppose, ”a squirrel”), reports that Vick’s representatives are hoping to arrange a meeting between Vick and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell within the next two weeks.
Earlier today, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that the process of reviewing Vick’s case is “ongoing.”
As we recently argued, a decision needs to be made quickly. Regardless of whether Vick is reinstated or suspended for an additional number of games, the fair and just approach to Vick’s bid to return to the NFL requires expedited action on his bid to return to the NFL.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has been using the phrase “conditional reinstatement” lately. Though he couches it as his own speculation, we get the sense that Mort knows more than he’s letting on, and that he’s possibly presenting some inside scoop as his own guess in order to protect his source (or squirrel).
A conditional reinstatement would make sense, since it would give Vick the opportunity to participate in training camp and the preseason before serving whatever additional punishment the league might decide to mete out.
Even then, however, Goodell should move quickly, so that Vick can exercise his appeal rights before Week One of the 2009 season.
Ya think?
Almost two years for killing dogs, and only 24 days for killing a mexican? Got to love the American judicial system!
Bull sh*t! He should not be allowed any more conditions to any other player that is suspended.
I cannot believe you sock puppets that are so enamored with this felon.
You have to assume that Goodell has some idea what he’s going to do about Vick. This whole “I want to see how contrite he is” just doesn’t make sense. Does Vick have to look really, really sorry? Will that do it.
And if this is true, then Goodell should just tell Vick yes or no on reinstatement. Drawing it out to appear deliberative is pointless. He’s had 2 years to figure out what to do.
I’m not arguing for reinstatement, but just more about not dragging this out any further.
Man I tell you this is all some BULLISH…..conditional this conditional that….let the man play…..There will be a lockout cause I GUARANTEE the players will NOT WANT GOODELL to be the only guy to give out punishments…..He better enjoy it while it last as this will change…

**********
Actually, he served 0 days for killing dogs; and Reyes was not a Mexican – he came from Cuba.
America is getting dumber every day.
Mexicans breed faster
Everyone who thinks he should be reinstated immediately….have you realized that he hasn’t actually served any type of NFL suspension yet?
He hasn’t played in two years because he literally COULDN’T play.
He should get another year off, or at the VERY least, a legitimate 8 game suspension.
the players dont determine whether there is a lockout. the owners do that. the players CAN stage a walkout, even in protest of the very fair treatment roger gave ookie. but the players wont all support a walkout. for any reason.
i dont see the owners doing jack to roger. bad actors like vick are bad for business. while blacks might want to watch a vick play no matter what (and how many tickets did you buy?)… a lot of gainfully employed people who cant answer polling calls to home phones during the day arent interested in ookie the crook playing again.
jwill does ookie owe you money? cause you sure are desperate to see him play!
vick is only contrite that he got caught. that’s all.
sincerity is key. once you can fake that, you’ve got it made!
lock out vick. usfl is his way to go. that, or a real job.
Zygi, dumber and more assuming.

Why should the NFL have to RUSH for ANYONE? Is it so important that we get this convicted felon back on the practice field in some sort of expedited fashion?
I say let him suffer – let him wait it out, jobless, unemployed like nearly 10% of America. Let him know how much of an honor it is to strap on the pads and the jersey of a professional franchise. Let him realize what he put in jeopardy when he mauled, maimed, and mutilated hundreds of innocent animals trained viciously, and destroy by electrocution, hanging, or drowning – AT HIS OWN HANDS.
This sick, sedistic f*ck should NEVER be allowed back in the NFL – let alone have the commissioner rush to make a judgment on this @$$hole.
Let him suffer. Ban him for life. PEACE OUT B*TCH.
Hey Goodell, maybe you should finally do your job.
Vick is not going to be allowed back in the NFL for a long time if at all.
What he did was too grotesque and violent, Goodell will not allow him back that easy.
He is looking at at least a one year minimum suspension from the NFL and if he gets 2 years forget it he will be to old and out of shape.
Once you are a convicted felon you cant own a gun or vote why should you be allowed to play in the NFL?
Goodell is not going to go easy on him because he is Michael Vick.
“the fair and just approach to Vick’s bid to return to the NFL requires expedited action on his bid to return to the NFL.”
No it doesn’t. Goodell’s got more important things to worry about than whether a convicted felon like Mike Vick should be reinstated.
Why is everyone forgetting about the fact that he fronted a gambling ring. I thought i had heard somewhere that that is a lifetime ban
I could careless if he is reinstated. While he will no doubt get signed by a team, Vick is done. He may find a role at various positions on a team but the days of him being a starting QB that is feared because of his speed/mobility are over. Speed/mobility were his claim to fame and those skills generally decline for most of us after 30……He will just end up being a “guy” on the roster that will sell tickets for a season or two, then fizzle out.
Actually, he served 0 days for killing dogs; and Reyes was not a Mexican – he came from Cuba.
rodstiffington is correct. It is amazing how people like to over simplify things and not pay attention to the facts of a story when the facts don’t fit their simplistic little world. Its how Clinton was impeached over sex and how OJ didn’t do it simpy because he wasn’t convicted.
Meanwhile, people make up their own details in the McNair case because they don’t want it to be a basic murder/suicide. Again, that doesn’t fit their simplistic little world, so lets change things so that the story can be what a person WANTS to believe.
America is getting dumber every day, and more odd.
“vicks representatives are hoping to arrange a meeting”jesus christ, what the f were these guys doing for the last two years?
Vick must be in a real hurry to lie to Goodell’s face again.
I’d like to see him banned for life, but that doesn’t fit with the other punishments that Goodell has handed down. He’s looking at a year ban and he can come back in 2010.
Illegal gambling
Has no place in NFL
Lifetime ban for Vick.
“Actually, he served 0 days for killing dogs; and Reyes was not a Mexican – he came from Cuba.
America is getting dumber every day.”
another example of a hater with the semantics….He server time for the Dog fighting ring and Reyes was HISPANIC! Now there you and I didnt leave the post but here is 1 for you
Americans are becoming more and more UNFORGIVING everyday…..enjoy
I’m going to meet in the middle ground. I think he should never play again, and be treated the same as any other felon, as it’s only fair that he faces the same tribulations the average person faces when convicted.
Having said that, the middle ground would be this. Suspension for a year. Reinstatement will be based on him getting a normal job and maintaining that job throughout the duration of his suspension, so he can fully understand how privileged he was to have played in the NFL, and privileged he will be when allowed back in.
That’s as fair as it gets in this wacked out country of ours, that allows stars to get what they want no matter how much they screw up.
lol @ Zygi
nice!
No no no … you guys have it all wrong. This isn’t about Vick, it’s all about getting Roger more press coverage. The longer this takes and the more imperious he makes himself look the better. It’s kind of like … like if Favre was running the NFL.
It’s looking more and more likely he will play this year. Hell, I mean Florio has gone soft on him with all these pieces saying Goodell has to move quickly to give Vick his due justice (not that those dogs got any). I mean he sticks it to Favre more than Vick and Vick just got out of the Federal Penn.
If florio is going soft on Mike Vick then I have to believe somebody at the top wants him back in the game. So positive PR waves for everybody.
You are such a dumb foolish left wing lawyer out to destroy reasoning and the NFL.
How can you in the earlier article say something as stupid as Vick being comparable to Aaron Rodgers when Vick never had a season statistics as good as Rodgers as a starter?
Vick never was a good QB and the NFL will never miss a poor player like that.
Look at his stats you ignorant NFL hating pest.
Aside from being a convicted felon, flipping off fans, spreading herpes, drug smuggling at the airport, failed drug tests, lying to the Commisioner, and recurrrently embarrassing the NFL, the guy can’t play.
He sucks. Look at his stats at the NFL website.
This slimy criminal marijuanna smoker has done nothing positive for the NFL. Nothing.
He sucks as a player, sucks as a citizen, and he sucks as a person. He is less than worthless and a drain on society.
“vicks representatives want to arrange a meeting”what the f were these guys doing when vick was in jail for the last two years?
if this is the quality of people in his employ then he should have stayed in jail.
In related news people in hades are requesting icewater soon.
vick will play again..this year
there will be several teams fighting to sign him
he will contribute on a team this year
what IS a worthless drain on society are ignorant bloggers who are unwilling to give people a second chance and have neither facts nor brains to back up their arguments
Either way he is done. He will be signed if reinstated but he will never be the player he was in the “hyped” years. Take away his speed/mobility (father time does that gradually, especially after 30) and he is just a guy. A guy who never was a great passing QB. He said he will only play QB. We will see how that works out……..
bob nelson,
its people like you who truly suck. you honestly sound like that kid no one liked in high school. then again, you probably are…
Nobody will be fighting to sign Vick. His days as a starting QB are done. He will sign somewhere but he will never start. The guy cant throw accurately and his speed will be in decline. You Vick apologists need a dose of reality.
You also need to understand Goodell’s bigger issue than the dogs being murdered is the illegal gambling ring that Vick financed. The NFL hates gambling, and will punish Vick severely just for that alone.
your looking at a 1 year suspension. The NFL didnt punish Vick yet. Goodell will drop the hammer on him
Wow, so varied of replies!
Listen, I know many people think of animals as no class citizens, but folks, they are precious to us. I cringe at the very thought of these horrendous things Vick made dogs do! It sickens me and makes me angry anyone would do that, let alone another person have the right to re-instate him!!!! This just goes to show us once again that important people and regular folks, such as I, have 2 different standards of the law.\
Vick did time, big deal. Who will speak for these wounded/dead animals???
I will.
Vick needs job at a veternary clinic. He doesn’t deserve one more laundered dollar.
folks, sorry for the double post,i had trouble with the new software.
you compose a reply and try to send it and all of a sudden you’re no longer logged on,boy this software sucks.go back to the hampsters, they are more reliable.

Plus the hamsters let us vote!
The gambling alone should institute a lifetime ban.
The best place to send Vick is Oakland which has plenty of experience dealing with criminals. Most busts for dog fighting I’ve seen on TV involve at least one person with a Raider’s jersey. Imagine how many Raider’s shirts with Vick’s name on them would sell.
he never served a day for dogfighting.
he did serve re interstate trafficking / racketeering / gambling. rico, the catchall law.
dickhead poindexter purposely flubbed up the dogfighting charges. thanx again, crooked black politician.
and bob, marijuana helps with glaucoma. read something besides packer report.
mike, yer a jackass. vick is out of the can. he therefore has a 2nd chance at life. werkin construction! however, he is not owed a 2nd chance in the nfl.
if you did anything like what he did, they wouldnt let you back to work at the same car wash…
and… the next time yall go to adopt a dog… if they ask you if u will keep it outside, u better lie and say no. because they think everyone is mike vick or lives next door to mike vick.
thanx again, vick, for giving dumbass liberals license to keep dogs from good homes!
Vick will have paid his dues to society when he gets wet down and electrocuted , had his head slammed into the ground and /or drowned like the 6 defenseless creatures he assisted in assassinating. Sorry for harsh words.
Dog lover
I’ve said all along that “Don” Goodell would reinstate Vick the first chance he got, AND he’ll have his capos twist some arms to make sure the poster boy felon gets picked up by a team that will have him starting at QB within three games into the season.
The corruption of the Goodell NFL knows no bounds.
Reply to TFbuckfutter: thank you thank you thank you – I’ve said this as well, again and again – immediate reinstatement, or even “conditional reinstatement” sans NFL penalty/suspension would mean that MV was getting more privileges than any other NFL offender has, for his multiple, significant offenses.
Another gripe – all these stupid polls, features, headlines, comments, etc., that are worded in such a way as to either ignore, or to prevent consideration of such things drive me crazy -
Not to mention those who keep saying he’s paid the price, now he has the right to play – he’s served his sentence for the crime(s) he committed, now he has the right to GET A JOB. Playing in the NFL is not a right guaranteed in the Constitution, even if you’re an NFL quarterback.
He needs to serve a suspension, like every other NFL (significant) offender does, and then he can APPLY for reinstatement, and can play IF and when he is offered a job.
Not before.
> Almost two years for killing dogs, and only 24 days
> for killing a mexican? Got to love the American
> judicial system!
Hey, Genius… Vick never served a day in jail for killing the dogs. He was jailed for running an interstate dogfighting ring and illicit gambling. He faced 40 years in Virginia for torturing and killing the animals, but those charges were dropped as part of his plea deal. Take your racism somewhere else.
NFL = Example + Rodel Model
If NFL reinstate Vick back into the NFL, NFL is telling future NFL prospects that it is okay to do a felon crime as long as you accept the consequence of your wrongdoing behavior and pay your price then you will still be welcomed back.
Instead, example and tone should be set by saying Vick is banned from NFL permamently then it will make all future NFL prospects to think hard before they act. NFL is a privilege that shouldn’t be abused.
I find it interesting that the NFL suspended Vick while he was in jail and on house arrest, and now that he is free, they are considering re-instating him? What was the point of the suspension? The NFL wouldn’t even consider him if he sucked, but after being away from the game for 2 years, there’s no way he will be back to original form. A part of me says he served his time and there’s no reason to punish him more by keeping him out of the NFL, but he’s also on probation, which should preclude him from being in the NFL. And what is the hurry anyway? Why is the NFL trying to accommodate this bozo? Just makes me sick. I won’t support a team that gets him.
i don’t think the NFL “owes” Mike Vick anything. He may want to meet soon to hope for a re-instatement, but the truth of the matter is he needs to wait for Goodell to set things up & contact him, not the other way around.
Vick was just “released”…. he needs to stop acting like everything revolves around him & his timetable. It’s a privlege to play in the NFL, and he’s had a ton of chances. He needs to just sit tight, and freakin show remorse for once.
the second he starts requesting meetings or demanding reinstatement, is when i would ban him forever if i were the commish…
What Vick did was wrong; but if PacMan Jones can play in the NFL than Vick should be allowed to play. Roger Goodell is a hypocrite if he doesn’t let him play this year.
