Vikings, Winfield closing in on a deal?

NFL_winfield.jpgThe impasse between the Minnesota Vikings and Pro Bowl (finally) cornerback Antoine Winfield could be close to ending.

According to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Winfield’s agent was traveling to Minnesota earlier today.

On my way to the Twin Cities now,” Ashanti Webb said via text, in response to a question regarding the status of the negotiations.

Agents and teams often get together for face-to-face talks when a deal is believed to be close.

So, unless Brett Favre has fired Bus Cook and hired Webb, it appears that something could be cooking.

Speaking of Favre, it’s possible that the Vikings want to get Winfield’s deal out of the way before word breaks of the financial package that the team will be providing to a soon-to-be-40-year-old quarterback.

    Winfield is over the hill.

It’s about time! Winfield is a great talent that I would hate to see play for another team..

Perhaps this means that the Farve deal is OFF and now the Vikes have a more sensible way to spend their money.

  4. JimmySmith says: Jul 22, 2009 4:46 PM

They better sign Winfield real quick before he realizes the Biqueens are renting Favre for over $10 million.
Its bad enough they kicked Birk to the curb, if Winfield gets shown the same shabby treatment, the Vikings will come off looking like a low rent sleazy run team. If that is even possible for the franshise that brought us the Love Boat, Whizzanator, a coach who sclaps his Superbowl tickets and a player who wraps his children’s head with plastic bag.

  5. Slim says: Jul 22, 2009 4:48 PM

This needed to get done. I’m glad they are doing it before camp starts.

Prediction: if Tarvaris Jackson is healthy and on the Vikings roster, he will be their starting QB by the end of this season.

  7. josdin00 says: Jul 22, 2009 4:53 PM

The best theory I’ve heard is that the Vikings have ironed out a deal with Favre. Once they knew how much they were going to spend on him, they knew how much they could afford to spend on Winfield. That would explain why the Winfield talks broke down right as the Favre rumors were heating up.

  8. j4a1 says: Jul 22, 2009 4:56 PM

Ok, perhaps they don’t want Winfield to see the cash they throw at Mike Vick. Vick in the wildcat would be scarier than a 40 year old, one year diva at the helm. Maybe the Vikes have come to their senses.

  9. LarryBird18 says: Jul 22, 2009 5:03 PM

Hardest hitting corner in the league…Can’t believe it took people this long to notice how good he is…
    Vikes=NFC North Division Champs…Again…
It always makes me laugh when I see the packers barely even being considered a sleeper team…NO RUN GAME…TURNED A GOOD DEFENSE INTO A CONFUSED SH*T STORM…maybe this year they’ll take home more than six games…haha who knows even detroit could finish ahead of the Sh*t packers…All Day is breaking 2000 this year b*tches…he already broke over 1700 with gus Sh*tty and T -too dumb for the nfl jackson…now defenses have to worry about percy…favre…and bernard….and All Day….haha green bay good luck with aaron rodgers and greg jennings…real scarry offense you guys have over there..good luck with that 3-4 in a running division

I wondered that too…. but I kinda doubt it. Isn’t their cap space like 24 million or so? That’s enough to sign both more than likely and their rookies.

  11. norsehorse says: Jul 22, 2009 5:26 PM

great news. winfield is a g coming off his first probowl (should have been at least his third). will be a shutdown corner until he transitions seamlessly to safety in a few years.

Winfield is fine but he’s old and his best days are definitely behind him…haven’t the Vikings relocated to LA yet?
If there is one thing more pathetic than the Vikings organization, its their fans who actually think their team is good.

  14. jeremiah says: Jul 22, 2009 5:39 PM

    larrybird18-
are you worried about the pack? what part of this story has anything to do with the packers? also, toine is definetly NOT the hardest hitting corner in the league, shoot, he may not be the hardest hitting corner on the team. he is pretty good though, but i bet the vikes overpay for him.
    froidian tell, anyone?
as for mike vick VS brett favre. pick your poison as far as which turnover you would rather have happen…. an deep heave interception or a wildcat fumble machine…..

  15. purpleloki says: Jul 22, 2009 5:40 PM

Winfield has earned his contract. Let him play this year at corner then move him to safety next year. It would give him more opportunity to smack the wimpy Packer receivers.

We ARE good at the moment. Awesome d-line, great o-line, awesome backfield, but we do have mediocre d-backs, QBs, and receivers. What team do you root for?

winfield is a top 5 CB in the nfl. ya’ll he don’t see it are idiots. Vikings are scary this year…..much better chance to compete than philly, ariz, dallas, and atlanta. only real competition is NY.

I expect Winfield to play at a high level (pro bowl) for then next couple of years. If he signs a 3 year deal and the decline starts to show at the end of the 2nd we can part ways.
As of right now though this is a great signing. He’s at the top of his game and is a leader. I was worried Favre, for as much as I want him on the team, would screw this up.
    Looks like we’ll have both!!!

Does this mean they can count on Winfield’s family to fill up some of the empty seats in that sh1thole homo-dome?

  20. jwflez says: Jul 22, 2009 6:04 PM

All you guys that say winfield is old or not as good as he used to be must not watch football, or the vikings play. Also the vikings are a very good team. Better then most!

The Vikings really get a lot of attention at this site. Lots of articles and in the comments of every article there are at least 20 posts by insecure Packers fans. That’s how you know fans of the other three teams think the Vikings could be very good this year. They can’t stop typing about how bad they’ll be!!

  23. nosferatu says: Jul 22, 2009 7:06 PM

Bird, you really think anyone is worried about Bernard, I don’t care who throws to him, he’s about as scary as blind a** Troy Williamson was, also I will be amazed if little Percy makes it through the season in one piece. As far as AD getting 2000, he may need to after your soon to be 40 yr old QB gets one of his limbs snapped, talk about living on borrowed time. The only thing I am worried about is that Brad and his kick a** offense will be out of the division after this year, but hell maybe some high school will give him another opportunity.

“winfield is a top 5 CB in the nfl. ya’ll he don’t see it are idiots”
i dunno about that. what exactly do you mean? against the run? the pass? overall?
wifield is great against the run. slightly above average in pass coverage. overall, best corner on the vikes, 2nd or 3rd best in the division.
the thing is, the vikes NEED him. they got nobody to take his place. asher allen isn’t ready, griffin mccauly gordon. i don’t even know if those last two guys are on the team anymore.
also, winfield ma not have such a hot year with suspect safeties behind him. prolly won’t try to jump too many routes.
i would say prolly more like top 8-10.

  25. Bob Nelson says: Jul 22, 2009 7:38 PM

The vikings pass defense was not even in the top 20 and poor play by Winfield is a part of it.
The vikings have a couplee of the worst CB’s in all of the NFL.
It would be another stupid move if they extended a bad corner like Winfield.
He has only had 3 INT’s in the last 2 seasons.
    Worthless

t-jack blows. if he is starting that means favre, sage and booty all went down and the season is over.

  27. Contra says: Jul 22, 2009 8:01 PM

I dont know why everyone is talking down about Winfield. As a Vikes fan, what you have to realize a few things. Winfield, as with Favre, may not be the BEST player for that position but dangit he is the better than what we already have on board. Is Favre the best QB to manage a team right now…no….is Favre the best QB that the Vikes will have on their roster…YES. Same with Winfield, yea he is good for our team but may not be the best overall option in the league. People just have to see it like that and accept it for what it is.

    Packers.
Your keyword is “At the moment.” At any moment your team could be plagued with defensive injuries just like the Packers were last season.
Something to keep in mind before you go trying to buy your playoff tickets- Despite the overall record and in spite of all of our defensive injuries, we still managed to put a very competitive team on the field. Sure, we had a couple of horrible games, but 7 of our 10 losses were by 3 points or less.
While that naturally doesn’t make us a great team, it certainly doesn’t make us a terrible one. The fact is we were able to compete almost every single week regardless of injuries.

I wouldn’t call it insecurity. It’s more like we don’t see you as a lock for the Superbowl before the season even starts like you see yourselves.
I can’t speak for Detroit, but I expect the Packers and Bears to both be competitive with you for the division this year.
But please, continue to under estimate your competition. It’ll make it that much sweeter for us when you get knocked on your ass.

  31. Gus says: Jul 22, 2009 8:18 PM

Not worthless imo. While it is true he is not the best cover corner, he hits hard, and he is a good vet to have in the backfield and in the locker room.
Hopefully he gets a good deal. He is a playmaker.

“He has only had 3 INT’s in the last 2 seasons.
Bob. That is because the opposing QB doesn’t throw at receivers covered by Winfield that often. Plus he breaks up a lot of passes and makes a lot of tackles.
People that understand this simple concept voted Winfield to the pro bowl last season. You know, including sports writers who cover these guys for a living.
What do YOU do for a living, Bob?
    Good player = pro bowl.

The Packers will be competitive this year. Aaron Rodgers is still the best QB in the NFC North, and yes that’s a true statement even if Favre signs with us.
Still, I think you’re misunderstanding a lot of Vikings fans. We don’t think we’re winning the Super Bowl, and we are even wary about a playoff spot. Most people who say we will are either being sarcastic or are homers.

  34. norsehorse says: Jul 22, 2009 10:34 PM

yeah how dare vikings fans support their team! packer fans your improvement at the quarterback position helped you to go on to a 6-10 season, and you’re no better this year, probably worse. 3-4 may eventually work in the nfc north, but not this year, not as long as ap is in the backfield.
have fun stacking the box against ap now that we have a qb that can get the ball down the field. 3-4 will open the field for ap and that’s not good for you.
doesn’t matter anyway, until somebody steps up the vikings are the nfc north champs and the packers finished ahead of detroit, good work.

  35. BobNelsonsRETARDED says: Jul 22, 2009 10:38 PM

    @BOBNELSON
You said vikings didn’t have a top 20 passing defense, yet the vikings pass defense was ranked inside 20 at 18 and they are missing the most under rated MLB in the NFL in EJ henderson. Also, the run defense is so good most teams pass so it makes the passing stats inflated.
Maybe you should take some time and learn football instead of posting retarded comments all the day, you and JimmySmith are some of the most ignorant people who post on here

Yup, champs on paper. Good looking out!
If by contenders you mean they have a chance to make the playoffs again this year, then you’re correct. Then again, so does Chicago, Green Bay and Detroit.
Point is the season hasn’t even started yet. We have no idea what’s going to happen. Adrian Peterson could go down, the Williams boys could wind up suspended, the Vikes defense could be plagued with injuries much like Green Bay’s was last season.. How about we start playing some games before getting too far ahead of ourselves, eh?

No I Believe, Brett will sign to Minnesota a offense he knows like the palm of his hand. He has two wide outs in Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin who are gonna be able to catch slants all day, just like brett did in Green bay, Than if you do decide to stop brett and possibly play a 8-7 man in the box style defense AP is gonna kill you. AP is the greatest play maker in the game and i guarantee he goes for atleast 2000 yards this season having brett at qb
Listen i dont think brett is that amazing of a qb right now, but i do know hes amazing at throwing the slant, he doesnt need to do much, bernard berrian and percy harvin will be able to get some wide open touchdowns when they start playactioning off AP.
People who dont recognize this, purely dont know how the game is played or are homer fans who cant stand the fact Minnesota can easily make it to the super bowl in the NFC.
I wish the best for my bears, but until we get some recievers in here *cough* brandon marshall* we got some positions wide open for anyone

  39. BobNelsonsRETARDED says: Jul 23, 2009 4:13 AM

And the Williams Wall will most likely be suspended…. at the beginning of the season…and thank god… they wouldn’t want it no other way… why would they wanna take the chance of losing them later in the season when they can lose them in the beginning and go against 4 of the weakest running offenses in the league. the best being the PACKERS…and what a joke that is.
Look up the stats of the 4 teams who Minnesota is going against, I hate reading the conversations on here when you guys surely cont know anything…I feel as though my football IQ makes the majority of you football ILLITERATE

  40. LarryBird18 says: Jul 23, 2009 10:21 AM

Benard had more deep ball(passes over 20 yards) plays than anyone one in the nfc with the best yards per catch in the league!!!!! and he was only a few catches from a 1000 yard season…mind you we have the best running back in the leauge with a lacking passing attack..so with all that said….ya you should be worried…plus hes a 97 speed in madden…so with all that, yes i can call him dangerous…i mean hes no old slow ass donald driver…maybe thats who consider dangerous…packer fans are the dumbest f*cking morons i have met

  41. norsehorse says: Jul 23, 2009 11:53 AM

hey bob nice “IQ” douche. if you’re so smart how’d you miss the story where the williams got their suspension overturned (yes temporarily) but since you’re so smart you know how long the judicial process is. they will win the case and if they lose it won’t affect the current season. aaron rodgers will get it from k dub no worries bro.
and it’s not about applying your suspensions at the most convenient time. these guys have a strooooong case and millions of dollars at stake. you’re stupid, stop talking.

No Bears fan I know would so willingly, so easily, so enthusiastically ADD to the growing flood of Viking slobber that pollutes this place (and everywhere else, it seems).
You Vikings fans want to know why we hate you?
    This is it in a nutshell–the constant off-season chest-thumping. The loud-mouthed braggadocious-but-unsubstantiated chest-thumping you do EVERY single off-season.
You guys might as well wear skirts, because you all sound like cheerleaders.
“Rah rah. We’re so great. Rah rah.”
No Bears fan I know can so easily slobber on AP’s purple helmet without at least doing so grudingly, or also mentioning his fumbles, his injuries, or his poor blocking/receiving skills.
“The greatest play-maker in the game” and 2000 yards, huh?
Besides, REAL Bears fans also wouldn’t be making boastful predictions about Benedict Bernard Berrian, traitorous douche that he is.
