As the football-watching world begins to digest the news that quarterback Mike Vick will be reinstated next week and then suspended four games to start the 2009 regular season for his violation(s) of the Personal Conduct Policy, it’s important to point out that the NFL’s system of crime and punishment seems to be working.
Today, the PFT “Days Without an Arrest” meter reached 33, an all-time record. But for Seahawks fullback Owen Schmitt’s granite-headed DUI arrest only two days after Donte’ Stallworth was suspended indefinitely for pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter, the total would be getting close to 60.
And with camps opening, the number could get even higher. Once training camps open, the teams have greater access to and control over the players. Barring the consequences of a final offseason Saturday night cocktail of youth, fame, money, and booze, 50 is a real possibility.
Though it’ll take a lot more time to determine whether Commissioner Roger Goodell’s hard-nosed stance on misconduct has caused a permanent drop in off-field misbehavior, the only other explanation at this point is coincidence.
Either way, we might have to spend some of that NBC money on adding a third digit to our counter.
I bet the Ravens go after him! He goes well with the Ray Ray the Murderer!
Won’t make it past this weekend.
You just jinxed it, like every time a TV broadcaster mentions how some punter has never had a kick blocked and then they get blocked on the very next play.
I GUARAN-DAMN-TEE it ends by this weekend. No way one out of 2,000+ relatively young, relatively rich doesn’t get into something the weekend before training camp. My money is early Saturday morning, very shortly after midnight.
The only counter we need to add more to is the national debt counter… (ouch) Can we file bankruptcy as a country? Or just give China the Dakota’s and call it even?
Queue arrest of NFL player in 5, 4, 3…
if Rothlisberger pays even a dime to this lady, or is charged/found guilty of any wrongdoing, i demand an asterisk be put next to the total days without arrest as it is a record that will be hard to break in the future.
oh wait look a Steeler fan talking about Ray being a murderer……..pot meet kettle…..
When do the Vikings and Bengals open camp again? Will Brett Favre play the part of Gavin McLeod?
Queue is a line… like standing in a line at a bank…
I think you meant “cue”
Steelfanmo: I was thinking maybe he could be a squeeler so him and big jen could discuss that rape rack thing he put the puppies in. Just a thought.
When did the name change from the “Turd Watch?” Wtf?
Tagliabue was the worst Commisioner in the history of the NFL.
He was a limp wristed East Coast lawyer with no guts.
Tagliabue was the NFL’s lawyer that mislead his client into the strike of 1982.
Tagliabue was soft on the Union and a soft on crime left wing LIBERAL.
Goodell may not be Pete Rozelle but following Tagliabue sure makes him look good.
An iron fisted new CBA will help him along nicely to undue the terrible legacy of Tagliabue.
Tagliabue is a good example of why lawyers should never be put in executive positions.
No way it gets past 35
Does rothlesburger count or no?
I think this is wack! very middle school girlish-can we man it up a bit fellas? how bout we have a ‘Days without crappy/sleazy Journalism”
i doubt that would get past 2 days-if we include the nypost we’d have to limit it to how many updates without….this is just a negative premise florio & leads to move negativity…
I would just like a clarification on the rules. Does the clock start at the time the last player was arrested? Or does it start at midnight the next day?
I will try not to let this thing get past 35. It’s not right. I’m sure if I troll enough Scottsdale bars and after-hour clubs I can find one Cardinal to take a swing at me. Bonus points if it’s Graves. My own wing in the Non Fruity Juice Hall Of Fame if it’s Leinart.
Look out, Cardinals! I’m coming for YOU!
(We have to be one of the cleanest organizations out there. When was the last time one of my guys was arrested for something?((the loser coach who tried to hire a prostitute last summer or two summers ago doesn’t count.) ) Say what you will about Old man Bidwill, but he at least keeps his players in check. I, personally, would have traded a couple bad guys getting arrested for not having to go through 20 years of misery. Hell, I’ll give away my house for free as the Cardinals “White House” to ensure it. But, alas, I’m a business man. That’s only like 2 steps above lawyer, and I LOVE criminal defense lawyers.)
What about Big Ben? Am I just confused on the rules? Plus, let’s wait to the start of camp. . .
