No impact yet on Roethlisberger's endorsement deals

Our colleague (sort of) and friend (when we need something) Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that the civil-lawsuit sexual assault allegations against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have yet to prompt any of Roethlisberger's off-field sponsors to give him the Kobe Bryant treatment.

Rovell points out that companies like Sprite, Spalding, and Nutella shifted away from Bryant in the wake of criminal and civil rape allegations made against him in 2003.

Roethlisberger currently appears in a commercial for Dick's Sporting Goods, pitching a Nike cleat.

"Ben Roethlisberger has been a longtime Nike athlete and continues to be part of our roster," Nike spokesman Derek Kent told Rovell.  "As has been our policy, we decline to comment on pending legal matters."

Dick's Sporting Goods is taking the same approach.

"Our view is that this is a judicial process and we'll let this play out," Dick's chief marketing office Jeff Hennion told Rovell. "Ben has always been a great spokesman for us and until something in the legal arena has changed, we will continue with this campaign."

We think that's the fair and appropriate approach.  At this point, there's no proof that Roethlisberger did anything wrong.  Instead, only one person is making an allegation that likely won't be supported by direct, third-party evidence.

Meanwhile, we'll be waiting to see whether this spot ever runs again.

The big difference between the Kobe and Ben scenarios is that, at this point in the process, we all knew Kobe was guilty of adultery, which could have very easily had an impact on Kobe's endorsements. We don't yet know whether or not Ben is guilty of anything.

I have threatened to leave the PFT fold a number of times - and it will be a difficult withdrawal - but I am out.

I finally realized that Florio - and most of the readers - are so dysfuncitional that they find their greatest happiness in the misery of others.

This should not be surprising - our blog and 24 hour cable news culture have come together to make sites like TMZ and this one very popular.

But here we have Florio taking a cheap shot - wondering whether the spot will ever run again...

Instead of pointing out that at this point we have only a statement from a young lady CLAIMING certain things happened - we have not heard from anyone else that any of the things she claimed happened did indeed happen - and read the transcript from Ben's statement yesterday - he does not acknowledge knowing - or meeting or having a consensual relationship with the young lady.

But Florio and the flock of sick teenage boys that try and show how smart they are with their cute little posts - see the first two in this thread - already have Ben guilty - ready for a full season suspension and want him to suffer as much as they do in their sick pathetic little lives.

Real people - the normal ones go out and make something of themselves - try and make the world a better place and are glad when others find success. The Florio flock is only capable of celebrating the problems of others - not hard to figure out he is a lawyer is it.

    I am OUT!

Sexual misconduct, drug use, alcohol abuse, referee payoffs and gambling do not make for a classy organization. It is about time they are exposed for what they really are.

I must be missing something. What did Florio ever say that would make anyone think he's trying to bring down Roethlisberger? He's reported facts through this entire story, and even admitted that it seems suspicious based on no criminal complaint, the fact that her lawyer doesn't want media attention, and that the civil case is being filed a year after the fact with no evidence to support her. Florio has said all this...so where do you get that he would need to send an apology letter?

I think anyone who wishes to post on this website should be required to pass a test...we could start with reading comprehension, since most apparantly don't understand what's being said.

She was probably the company prostitute, which is legal in Nevada. It was probably her job to satisfy top visitors. She probably satisfied Ben on a few different stays that he had at the hotel. He probably got tired of her, and told her "No... please... I don't want to do this... I'm out of beer..." she probably said "don't worry, I'll put a bag over my head..." Then when they were finished, he went to the bathroom to throw up. When he returned, she was trying to take a picture of herself with his camera, but the camera broke. He then threw her out of the room... Seriously though, she probably was the company prostitute.

TJ, TJ, TJ...You're statements that you make on here are so juvenile. You're like a little kid screaming so you'll get attention. There are actually Raven fans on here that are knowledgeable enough to realize that the Steelers organization and The Rooneys are the definition of class. As a Steeler fan, I acknowledge that the Ravens are a great team who just came up a bit short last year, with a stellar front office. Why can't the rivalry be mutually respectful? Because some Steeler fans call Ray a murderer? How about not letting them get to you and move on?

Also, in light of all this Raplisberger, I have a one for all of us Steeler fans: RapeLESSberger. He's not liable...

Ben is just about average as a qb, really. If you need to, you can win without him. He's not Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, or Peyton Manning...he could only hope to be!

Get over yourselves...this will all go away soon enough. In the meantime, let everyone else have their fun. You would do the same.

Oh, by the way.....your whole town sucks.

  30. mborz says: July 24, 2009 2:58 PM

Kaz said: "I'de argue that there is another big difference between the two, but whatever."

Look, if you want to make an argument, go ahead and make it, don't make a veiled claim and then pull a middle school "whatever" without backing it up. If you have something to say, say it.

My point in posting what I did was that people seem to be focusing all of the differences in the reaction to Kobe's and Ben's cases without looking for any actual factual differences in the two situations, when they do indeed exist, and they do go beyond race.

Another thing that's not obvious in reading Florio's post is that the Kobe endorsements weren't immediately pulled. The Sprite commercials were phased out. Spalding and Nutella kept their endorsements but chose not to renew them when they expired.

How does this parallel the Roethlisberger case? It doesn't. There's no correlation at all. Why? Because we don't know yet, because not enough time has passed to know what the long term effect will be on Ben's endorsements.

So why does someone try to draw a parallel between them when none exists at this point? You'd have to ask Florio that question. Because the original article made it pretty clear, while Florio's condensed version does not.

  55. Paul_R. says: July 24, 2009 5:50 PM

It's understandable that Steelers' fans are up in arms about anything related to the lawsuit filed by Andrea McNulty and posts made by Mike Florio. After all, this is the Steelers' star quarterback. It's not necessarily understandable, but I see that there's quite a number of (idiots) who have come in with their idiotic comments and bashing of Roethlisberger and/or the Steelers. Actually, it's sad, but I won't comment more on that.

But, let's get a few things straight. First, this is a lawsuit, a civil lawsuit, which has nothing to do with criminal charges, criminal trials, or prison terms. Ben Roethlisberger will not miss playing time this upcoming season because of this civil lawsuit which was just filed. It could take two years or longer for this to get to a trial.

I have read the entire filed document, all 36 pages. It outlines many incidents by persons also named in the lawsuit, eight Harrah's employees, who are not Ben Roethlisberger. So, this lawsuit is as much about them as it is about Roethlisberger and it includes John Koster, President of Harrah's (Northern).

The lawsuit was filed by Calvin Dunlap. He was the Nevada Trial Lawyers' Association's 2007 Trial Lawyer of the Year. He is a former prosecutor who is noted for never having lost a jury trial during his tenure. He has handled many high-profile cases including representing the wife against the Governor of Nevada in a very messy divorce case. He has a reputation of winning cases. He didn't file this case on scant evidence. He believes that he can win the case, therefore he must have enough solid evidence to feel that it was worth filing.

Steelers fans, before you get bent out of shape, I'm not presuming that Ben is guilty.

I believe that this whole case hinges, not on proving that Ben raped McNulty, but on whether or not Harrah's employees conspired to keep McNulty's complaint from being reported.

Prior to the alleged incident last year on July 11, McNulty has worked for Harrah's for approximately 5 years and 3 months. After this alleged incident, Ms. McNulty continued working for Harrah's. She may have many friends who also work at Harrah's. And, there may be many other employees who witnessed one or more of the incidents described in the lawsuit. There may also be records in the form of documents, memos, emails, or other types of records that corroborate some or many of the incidents related in the lawsuit. If the attorney can prove the allegations against some or all of the Harrah's employees named in the lawsuit, then the attorney will angle to show that Roethlisberger also being guilty.

But, the problem I see in this is that there may be no direct evidence that a rape was committed. It is likely that Harrah's will be subpoenaed for tapes from video cameras outside of the room that Ben stayed in from that date. Whether a tape or tapes exist is not known. The medical records may also be brought in in an attempt to prove that Ms. McNulty suffered a very traumatic experience. I do not know if there is any other kind of evidence that they could bring and I don't really know exactly how they can tie Roethlisberger into it without any direct evidence.

I believe Florio stated that during Roethlisberger's statement, though he denied sexually assaulting Ms. McNulty, he did not deny having a sexual relation with her. Although TMZ stated that a "source" said the Roethlisberger had a "consensual sexual liason" with Ms. McNulty, I do not know that anyone has a way to prove it.

But, this attorney must feel like there is some compelling evidence that will tie Roethlisberger in and prove that he sexually assaulted McNulty. Otherwise, why would he file the lawsuit.

Though I don't like to see this happening to Roethlisberger (or anyone), when this is over, Ben Roethlisberger could very well be proven to have sexually assaulted Ms. McNulty and Steelers fans and the Steelers organization might want to prepare for that possibility.

    Ladder,

You think Ben is average because we have such a good D and a running game right? I'm guessing that you feel the Ravens D over the past 8 years has been as good if not better than the Steelers D right? I mean they have finished in the top 5 in D I think the past 6 out of 7 years or something impressive like that. And that running game over at Baltimore has been pretty impressive too, with Priest Holmes and Jamal Lewis, even McGahee and McClain were bruisers last year.

So I ask you, if the Ravens have a stellar D and running game, and so do the Steelers, why does Pittsburgh have 2 SB Championships in the past 4 years, and Baltimore hasn't been to the Superbowl in a decade? Seems like our quarterback has a lot to do with it, no?

Seems like you're argument just went down the drain huh? Oops... How about you go home and think about it some more and come back with a better excuse, and I'll be right here to put that one to rest to.

"This means that when/if the case goes to trial, it will be in Nevada, in front of a Nevada jury, rather than in Pennsylvania/Pittsburgh in front of a jury that is most likely going to be pro-Roethlisberger."
    .............

"The advantage to the Plaintiff in the Roethlisberger case from the case being tried in Nevada rather than Pennsylvania is enormous."

    Paul_R...nicely said, but prepare to be lambasted by the disgruntled steeler fans.....in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....

I'm saying Ben is average because that's what he is. The fact that you have a good defense and running game has everything to do with why Pittsburgh wins so much. You're right, the Ravens have a strong D, but not as good as a running game. Plus you throw in a rookie qb or a hack like Boller and you have less than the Steelers. Get a grip....you have a great team. All I'm saying is that Ben is average at best. Most anyone who is not biased and knows a little about the NFL will agree.

    Paul_R...well spoken.

Rating: 5/5, strictly for the last line being dead on.

    SoFlor Steeler --- Rating: 1/5

    Good riddance to bad rubbish

    SixBurghDude --- Rating: 1/5

By the way, more comeback wins just means the Steelers were down more often than the Pats and Colts. Ben's good, but Brady is great. I'll take Brady every day of the week.

No matter the out come. This will hang heavy on Ben Toothlessbeger and the mighty aweful shittsburgh squeelers. I do envy the fact that you have more SB rings than any. But I promise yer DONE in "09"

Hayward...I don't get the name Hay Ward Ja Blom Mi? Most with any sense of tryin' to be clever would go with Heywood Jablomi, but your posts prove that you're a TOOL..."more comeback wins just means the Steelers were down more often"...which also means that their QB is most responsible for those wins, TOOL!

Bladder21...so there you have it, your boy Hayward just BLEW your argument FOOL, "more comeback wins just means the Steelers were down more often"...so how then is it the defense & running game winning all those games FOOL?

    I'm PurpleBrownieManiac...bet y'all never
knowed da reezin that Big Ben feller wuz able to drive his Stillers 80+ yds. in da final mins. of da divishun decidin' game agin' my ScavengerBirdies washed up/over da hill D, wuz only cuz we wuz playin' a prevert, I meen, prevent deefence...honest to God, we wuz, even wit a 3 pt. leed...Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

@Hayward/Bladder21/PurpleBrownieManiac/rusH1023/tj.52/CrissyHenrysThugs & all you haters of the Men of Steel

THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE & HERE ARE THE FACTS:
In Tom Brady's 4 Super Bowl runs, 3 wins - 1 loss = +2 net (all done with a proven advantage of having the defensive signals no less) his avg. QB Rating for those 12 post-season games is: 92.81 (while playing 6-home/2-road games, of the 8 non-Super Bowl games)......In Ben Roethlisberger's 2 UNDEFEATED Super Bowl runs, 2 wins - 0 losses = + 2 net, his avg. QB Rating for those 7 post-season games is: 95.41 (while playing 2-home/3-road games of the 5 non-Super Bowl games)......If you want to compare ONLY Brady's 3 winning Super Bowl runs his avg. QB Rating for those 9 post- season games is: 91.52......Ben has a rating over 100 in 2 of 7 games (28.6%), Tom has a rating over 100 in 4 of 12 games (33.3%)......Ben has a rating over 90 in 5 of 7 games (71.4%), Tom has a rating over 90 in 5 of 12 games (41.7%)......Ben has a rating over 80 in 6 of 7 games (85.7%), Tom has a rating over 80 in 8 of 12 games (66.7%)......Ben Roethlisberger's avg. of the 3 (61.9)%)......Tom Brady's avg. of the 3 (47.23%)......Most NFL QB's would have success behind the same Cheatriots O-line that blatantly holds on nearly every play (yes, they are taught by the MASTER CHEATER), yet hardly ever gets flagged, while having MOSS + WELKER to throw to, just throw it up to one and he'll go & get it or throw it 3-5 yards to the other & he'll get you 10-15 in YAC......likewise for NFL QB's if they had the luxury of HARRISON, WAYNE, CLARK & GONZALEZ in the pattern, play after play, while having JAMES and/or ADDAI in the backfield to keep the defense honest......Now how many QBs can do what Ben does in extending play after play, while taking the punishment he takes, and no longer having the luxury of a dominant running game???

    http://www.youtube.co/watch?v=TuA4YvH2hj8

Tom Brady WILTS when faced with the type of pressure Ben Roethlisberger has had to endure thru-out the majority of his career, yet all he does is set records for WINS......best one is at the end of SBXLII, with the game on the line, fellow PSU alum Jay Alford up the gut with a facemask full of Brady's scrawny chest.....LMMFAO!

BTW Patsy fans; the next 4th Qtr. game winning TD drive that Brady engineers in a Super Bowl will be his FIRST!!!

    OK...SixburghDouche......
First, I never understand one word you are trying to say in any of your posts...maybe someone could decipher...I doubt it....
Second, why is it that when you post, you almost always follow with another immdeiate post? Is someone having problems completing their thoughts??? Thats ok big guy...it will be ok..
Douche, face it your QB can elude (that means to escape or evade) but he is too dumb to read a defense....stop blaming the O-Line for sacks all of the time!!!
Oh wait...so you may understand what I just wrote let me end it with.......
    My fizizzle....shinizzle....bawahhhhhhh.....

  66. SixBurghDude says: July 25, 2009 12:29 PM

RavenPanic.....Admitting your failure to grasp the English language in a public forum is commendable...your exposing yourself as a TOOL on a site where the vast majority have at least a modicum of football knowledge is IDIOTIC...1st you say your team was playing a prevent defense in the final minutes while protecting a mere 3 point lead & now you are insinuating that the Steelers o-line is better than their record setting future H-O-F QB...bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

  67. Ravenmaniac says: July 25, 2009 2:06 PM

SixBlah..what you are spewing IS NOT the english language...but a cover up for something....

You are correct,,,,,their OLine takes too much of the blame....if you were half a fan you would have noticed that your own coach called Ben out last year for not being in the play book enough..When a QB cant read a defense they tend to hold onto the ball and get sacked more than usual (i.e: Ben) ....but hell, who am I tellin..you are a football genius! You scream the loudest so you have to know what you are talking about...right?

Yes that is what I was saying about the Ravens and others playing a prevent defense..DBag.

Now you say "a mere 3 point lead" what happen to "ass whoopin"??? Wow! Make up your mind...exposed...

Ben a Hall of Famer??? Now I know you are smoking something.....get real! Is Ben a good QB..yes, but he is no hall of famer.

I watch you on this site bashing anyone (not just me) who doesnt agree with your Steelers opinion...you spew the same crap to everyone...it is guys like you that are 4 foot tall and have never been to Pittsburgh but jumped on the bandwagon back in 2005 so you could yap about something. I bet your Big Ben jersey still has the tags on it. I bet you have never been to an NFL game in your life have you???

  68. SixBurghDude says: July 25, 2009 3:19 PM

RavenManiac.....where to begin? How bout we start with the FACTS, which I've already posted to support my argument & which you have not yet done to support yours. All you spew is your propaganda & hate for a team & a player you despise for being superior to those you support. Never claimed to be a football genius, just keepin' it real, but you have proven to be an IDIOT in your lack of knowledge of the game. Thank God Ben holds onto the ball "too long", otherwise he never would have lead his team to nearly as many WINS as he has in record setting fashion (also stated by the same coach of his that you refer to). Once again, and hopefully for the final time, the ass-whuppin' comment was based on the FACT that Ben's boys OWNED GrayRay's boys to the tune of not 1, not 2, but 3 total victories in as many games this past season, so call it what you want & I'll call it an ass-whuppin'...as for your sayin' your PurpleBrownies were in a prevent, that is just EXPOSING yourself as being UNINFORMED. The H-O-F comment was IMHO, only time will reveal it's accuracy, either way, at this point in time, it's neither right, nor wrong. All that & we still have yet to address the most blatant case of your ignorance, somehow you are able to know where I've been & what my physical stature is from a few posts on a football news site....not that it's any of your concern, but since it is of such importance to you, I not only have been to the City of Champions, but was also born & raised there as well, having never missed a Steeler game since the early 70's & I'm proud to say that I have attended many NFL games, not only in the 'burgh, but in many other NFL cities as well, as has the vast majority of SteelerNation. So, before you call me out, let me extend an offer to meet you at Murderer & Thieves stadium, before the 2009 version of the Men-o-Steel @ PurpleBrownies rivalry, I'll be the dude in the #7 jersey, w/o tags. Btw: regarding the 4' tall comment, I'm 6'-3", but don't let that infuence your decision! lmk.....bwhahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahaha!!!

  69. Ravenmaniac says: July 25, 2009 4:20 PM

Then please tell me how I am UNINFORMED??? Please explain the prevent defense so I can better understand.......
So I was off by 2' 6".....I am at every Ravens game as well as the steelers rapist and wife beaters stadium....
6 ft 3 in...are you nuts? I am not meeting you.......
    Avid Ravens fan....yes...
    Ben despiser....yes
    Idiot.... no!
I will stick to talking smak on here...without getting my ass kicked...thanks.
But do explain the prevent defense...so I am smart like you...
