Rumors fly of Favre's arrival in Minnesota

Several readers have alerted us to rampant rumors in Minnesota that:  (1) Brett Favre is in the building; and (2) a press conference will be held at 11:00 a.m. ET to announce his official arrival as a member of the team.

Though Favre could indeed disclose today that he’ll be officially signing in Minnesota, we think the current rumor is wrong, for two reasons.

First, as of this posting, it’s 10:50 a.m. ET, and the Vikings have sent out no notice of a press conference.

Second, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Favre is not in the building.

Even if word comes that Favre will be a Viking when camp opens next week, our guess is that at most the announcement would be made today, and that the press conference would be held next week, no earlier than Monday.

Meanwhile, we’re suggesting a slightly different approach for the Vikings in our soon-to-be-posted-unless-they-think-it-sucks-but-then-again-that-has-never-stopped-them-before column for SportingNews.com.

Favre probably leaked the rumor knowing it wasn’t true. Once he was one of my favorite players ever. Now he is one of my least favorite. He’s a drama queen among drama queens.

Hey everybody, the rumors are true. I am in the building, but not to announce my reunretirement and rereturn to the NFL. I am only hear because I heard there was some Jim Beam and vicodin. Yeah thats right, I’m back on the sauce.

It’s wierd that earlier this week that Jared Allen said he was getting sick of it, and wanted him to make a decision so they could move on. Then yesterday his holiness proclaims Allen, AD, and others have been begging him to come…..doesn’t really all add up.
someone ask Allen if the text part of the story is true…a few of the Jets finally admitted it last year.

  19. ChadO says: Jul 24, 2009 11:48 AM

I have been a Vikings fan since I was a child. I hope the Vikes do well but man it will be tough to route for Favre. I can’t stand him and think he should just call it quits, even if he helps the team. Wanted to let everyone know that there are a FEW sane Viking fans. We don’t all think the Super Bowl is a sure thing with Favre there.

  29. Professor says: Jul 24, 2009 12:06 PM

LarryBird18, thank you, thank you for the comment. Nothing will be sweeter than seeing the disappointment in the eyes of Viking fans when they realize Brett is not the “savior” and that picking him up was a bad move. Coming from a Packer fan, you have no idea what your team is in for. Your locker room will be divided and AP’s numbers will go down. Don’t think for a second that Brett will “open up the run game”. He will insist on a certain number of pass plays per game which will take carries away from AP….worst possible thing your offense can do.
If the Packer defense plays well next year (big if rioght now) the Vikquees will have their ass handed to them when they play the Pack.

  31. Rockstar says: Jul 24, 2009 12:14 PM

I was in favor of Brett coming here, but am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick of the drama and bullsh*t. BRETT, SH*T OR GET OF THE POT!!!!!!!!!!!!! At this point, does anyone still really care? He would be an improvement, if he ever decides what he wants to do, which at this point should be clear. i.e. surgery, rehab, workouts……so what’s the holdup?? You don’t put a condom on unless you are gonna do f*ck!!!

  32. gwinn1952 says: Jul 24, 2009 12:34 PM

We wrote this article why????? Another way to get fans angry with Brett. He doesn’t deserve it. He said he’ll make an announcement by training camp….then wait for it instead of all the unnamed sources.

  33. Wiscdave says: Jul 24, 2009 12:38 PM

Speaking of the Sporting News, why do you continue to hump Vick’s leg? You and the rest of the media continue to float this notion that he’s a unique talent who has paid his debt to society and should be reinstated. Paying your debt to society does not mean that you get to pick up your life exactly where you left off. Forget the animal cruelty. He financed an interstate gambling operation–organized crime–over a period of years. If your accountant was caught laundering money, would you rehire him after he served his prison time? Vick blew his chance. He can do something else now.

    cause now they sure wont.
besides, t-jack is a poor man’s vick. which is to say, a poor man’s poor man’s attempt at having a qb.
and i seem to remember, zygi directing chilly to bench t-jack last year after 2 losses.

  38. tj.52 says: Jul 24, 2009 1:27 PM

Wow, this is kind of sad.
Favre, in his prime, needed Desmond Howard and Andre Rison (both pimped and shafted by the classy Packers organization) to win his only SuperBowl even though at the time he had the best team in the league.
If Vikings fans think this guy is going to lead them to the promised land, they are delusional.

  39. ZombieRevolution says: Jul 24, 2009 1:41 PM

Florio writes “Meanwhile, we’re suggesting a slightly different approach…”
Let me guess, since your hatred for Favre is becoming legendary: “We suggest that the Vikings call on Lord Favre to grace them with his presence, then the Williams Wall should meet him at the airport and repeatdly sack him until he can no longer stand. That should end his waffling forever!” That should cover it right?

  40. Mike D says: Jul 24, 2009 1:45 PM

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin’ crude.
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.
Well the first thing you know ol’ Jed’s a millionaire,
Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.
    Hills, that is.
    Swimmin pools, movie stars.
    The Beverly Hillbillies!
Sung at the end of the show:
Well now its time to say good-bye to Jed and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You’re all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality
Hillbilly that is. Set a spell. Take your shoes off. Y’all come back now, y’hear?

This just in: Brett Favre was spotted purchasing three Rodeo cheesburgers at a Burger King facility. Football experts agree that Favre is bulking up for what appears to be an imminent return to the NFL. That or he was very hungry. More to come as the situation unfolds…

Brett Favre is an old bumb who loves to play with peoples emotions. He’s a cold spiteful bastard who just want to put it in the face of Ted Thompson I bet u he can careless if we win or not. He’s just going to tear apart our locker room cuz hes a lil pre modana and is gunna bitch about not seeing his family and having to dorm… bitch please if someone were offering me 10 mill for a year, and i suck donkey balls ima take it and not bitch at all, he sucks i dont even want him anymore, all he’s doing is messing with our heads and getting us excited, even though idk why some of u fans are excited hes not going to do any good for us he SUCKS and watching Cris Carter and hearing him say don’t do this to my vikes common man even Cris Carter knows its a bad move and its killing him you know hes a vikings fan and he wants us to do good and even he knows Favre isnt the answer.

For all you guys who keep referring to sir brett when he was with the jets, keep in mind he didn’t have even close to all the offensive weapons he will have to work with when he is a viking! I think they said it wasn’t all farves fault because the jets led the league in dropped passes. Sure he looks his age and maybe he has lost a step, but he, with all the offensive weapons the vikings have to offer, should be a very dangerous team. Also Tjak and sage could even pick up a few tips from the master. ITS ALL GOOD !

Seriously? The Vikings don’t have one 1,000 yard receiving season on their team. Allow me to repeat that.
None of the current Vikings WRs has ever cracked 1,000 yards receiving in the NFL.
Laveranues Coles has had three. Jericho frickin Cotchery has had one.
So you couldn’t be talking about the Vikings’ vaunted 4th-best NFC North receiving corps. Maybe you’re refering to Adrian Peterson. Surely Favre has never had a 1700 yard rusher at his disposal. Ah, but he has. In 2003 Ahman Green gained 1883 on the ground and another 367 in the air. They lost in the divisional playoff round.
Peterson’s a great runner, but he’s one-dimensional. From there it goes downhill. They get it done with the running game and by stopping the run. Force them to pass or pass on them and you’ve won the game.
Will Favre’s arrival change that? Yeah, to some extent. Will he play nice with Childress’ don’t-lose-the-game offensive game plan? Probably not.

  51. vikes backer says: Jul 26, 2009 6:53 AM

How can anyone say peterson is a one demensional player, he has never had a QB who could consistenly lead a team down the field and actually complete a pass once in a while in the backfield with him before. Everyone will see just how good peterson is this season if farve joins the team. Its going to really open things up for him.

  52. jimicos says: Jul 27, 2009 10:39 AM

It has nothing to do with having a QB. He doesn’t block, he doesn’t catch and he fumbles. When they hand the ball to him and he runs, it’s a thing of beauty. But he IS one-dimensional.

  53. vikes backer says: Jul 27, 2009 1:07 PM

It has everything to do with having a good QB in the backfield with him because it will open up the running game for he and taylor. I wouldn’t be supprised to see him hit 2000 yds. this season if it all comes together. His blocking isn’t that bad, and you say he doesn’t catch, well there again is where the good QB comes in. Somebody able to complete a pass once and a while. Sure he had a few fumbles last season. It wasn’t that bad in his 1st season, I truly believe that any team in the NFL would give anything to have a one dimensional player like that !
