As the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookies and selected veterans arrived at training camp today, the team’s inventory didn’t include first-round wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.
Maclin, who was drafted 19th overall, remains unsigned. However, Eagles coach Andy Reid indicated that progress has been made in negotiations.
“Nothing has been agreed on yet, he hasn’t signed yet,” Reid told reporters in comments distributed by the Eagles. “We’ll see how things go through the day. I think we’re close in a couple areas, we need to get closer in a couple other areas.”
It’s unclear what specific contract items would need to be resolved before Maclin’s deal could be completed, but Reid is holding out hope that something will be done soon.
Maclin’s agent, Jim Steiner, and Eagles consultant Andrew Brandt, who’s leading the Eagles’ negotiations, have a lengthy history of doing deals.
So, Maclin’s contract isn’t expected to take a long period of time to be finalized.
Steiner’s partner, Ben Dogra, is also involved in the discussions.
Reid didn’t make any predictions, though, on how long it might take to get Maclin into camp.
“I’ve been through enough of these, you don’t know,” Reid said. “The agents, obviously, are going to push it right to as far as they can push it.
“Some of it is determined by who signed ahead of you and who signed behind you, and when their camps start. We’ve just got to see how the whole thing works out.”
Last year’s pick at Maclin’s slot, Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Jeff Otah, signed a five-year, $14.4 million contract that included $8.965 million in guaranteed money, according to published reports.
Ya know, people SCOFFED at Jerry Jones for saying this was the worst year to have a 1st rd pick. They thought that was his typical “spin-job” BS trying to find a way to defend his reasoning for trading away our 1st rd pick for Roy Williams.
Yet…
Camps around the league are on the verge of starting and only 4 1st rd picks have signed and many holdouts seem likely. I wonder if Jerry was right in projecting some 1st round player contract talk breakdowns because of the looming possibility of an uncapped year? Isn’t there some 30% rule that throws a wrench into these talks?
Times Yours……..
good.
send him to the D!
As long as he’s signed before Monday morning, I could care less.
I find it hard to believe Jerry Jones had any insight on how many 1st Rd’rs would sign and how many would hold out. Of course he would say its not a good year for first round picks b/c Dallas didnt have any. I actually believe they didn’t have any first day picks at all, sooo what does that mean it wasn’t a good crop of players available in the 2nd and 3rd either. I dont buy it at all. Jerry needs to hand over the football operations to a football guy. He should have done that when Parcells was there (promoted him to front office instead of letting him walk) he should’ve ironed out whatever financial detail that prevented Reeves from siging on. He’s a non football guy making football decisions much like Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato.
Jones had no idea what was gonna happen w/ 1st Rd. picks he was just to stupid to see that Roy Williams wasn’t worth what he gave up to get him. Even if he truly saw this comming (which I still believe is a little premature to jump to any conclusions as to whats gonna happen w/ 1st Rd’rs) you just don’t give away your picks for a bum like Roy Willams. He could’ve traded down for more picks in the 2nd, could have traded it away for a 1st rounder next year. Jerry Jones is to cought up in his own hype to see how bad of an owner he is. He’s ruining what Parcells built a few years ago, thats all Dallas has some remaining parts from what parcells put together.
So, is Maclin actually allowed to practice without a contract, or not? If he isn’t there, is that technically holding out?
You can’t do anything with the team if you are not under a contract. You can use any language you want in describing the contract situation. In the end it’s still unresolved.
Maclin isn’t allowed to practice without a contract. However, training camp hasn’t begun yet, so he’s fine. If training camp begins and Maclin still does not have a contract in place, then you can consider it a hold out.
@AmhaTek
1. Dallas had a 2nd rd pick but traded it away on draft day, while they were on the clock.
2. Dallas had two 3rd rd picks.
3. Jerry pointed this out months and months ago that he foresaw some issues with signing 1st rd rookies this year. It has had nothing to do with “insight”, it had everything to do with him just foreseeing into the future and seeing that there might be some issues signings these guys because of the CBA issues currently at hand. Besides, Didn’t Belichek choose to trade out of the 1st rd for pretty much the same reasons??? Which was that the 1st rd crop was bad this year and there would be some issues getting these guys into camp on time because it’s the last year of the current CBA.
4. There’s no point in debating with you because by calling Roy a “bum”, it’s obvious that your mind is already made up.

Do you mean you COULDN’T CARE LESS? because if you COULD CARE LESS you are saying that you still have feelings which COULD be lowered.
So we just copy and paste from news articles now?
“I find it hard to believe Jerry Jones had any insight on how many 1st Rd’rs would sign and how many would hold out.”
I believe it’s more about who is ready to contribute.
“He’s a non football guy making football decisions much like Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato. ”
Vinny Cerrato is supposed to be a football guy. The Redskins had four draft picks this year, by the way. Not quite the same.
“you just don’t give away your picks for a bum like Roy Willams.”
Why not? Other teams have given up more for a lot less. Roy Williams has proven himself to be a player. Nobody knows if this Maclin guy (for instance) will be.
“Jerry Jones is to cought up in his own hype to see how bad of an owner he is.”
hahaha look around you! How many owners do you think are better than Jerry Jones?
“He’s ruining what Parcells built a few years ago, thats all Dallas has some remaining parts from what parcells put together.”
What’s with the Parcells worship? He’s supposed to be the ultimate football guy but letting him run the draft was very hit-and-miss. Is Anthony Spencer the kind of guy you give up draft picks for? Bobby Carpenter? Marcus Spears? Parcells actually wanted Spears over Ware, Jones talked him into taking Ware first at 11th overall because he felt that Spears would still be there at #20, and he was. And don’t get me started on Parcells’ inability to draft offensive linemen. Al Johnson, Justin Bates, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman, Rob Pettiti, Pat McQuistan, E.J. Whitley, James Marten, Doug Free, are those the kinds of guys that you give draft picks for? Because that’s every offensive lineman that Parcells drafted for the Cowboys.
What, no snide comments about him holding out? Guess those are reserved only for Michael Crabtree.
