Ravens waive Sypniewski

The start of training camp has most of the football world giddy, but it also means its time for some of the crueler aspects of the business.

The Ravens cut tight end Quinn Sypniewski Monday, two months after he experienced a setback in his surgically repaired knee.

The fourth-year player missed all of 2008 after tearing his ACL. He appeared in 31 games in his first two seasons with the Ravens.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron loves to use his tight ends involved, but the Ravens are full of question marks at the position with Todd Heap and L.J. Smith atop the depth chart. Both veterans were limited in OTAs because of injuries, a common occurrence for each player in recent years.

Getting production out of his tight ends will be even more important for Joe Flacco if Derrick Mason doesn’t return to the team.

The Ravens also waived guard Brian Johnson, who spent time on the team’s practice squad last year.
