Will Favre bury the hatchet with Green Bay?

Let's assume for a moment that quarterback Brett Favre decides this week to remain retired -- and that he also decides not to change that decision.

(We know that might be a real stretch, but bear with us.)

If Favre isn't going to play for the Vikings, he probably thinks he needs to mend fences with Packers fans who have begun to turn on him.

As a result, we can't help but wonder whether Favre would hope to proclaim his decision not to play for the Vikings via a press conference from Green Bay.

It would provide the ultimate cover for his decision not to don purple after creating the impression for weeks that he was destined to do so.  And then he could claim that, in the end, he just couldn't bring himself to wear the colors of one of the Packers' primary rivals.

This is all pure and complete speculation.  But, with Favre, the prospect isn't all that crazy.

Besides, he'd probably still like to strike that $20 million Green Bay marketing deal, which as a practical matter won't be available until the economy improves -- and until the NFL and its union work out a new labor contract.

This is the first year I started reading this website, and if tripe like this article is what I can expect, I won't be coming here much longer.

Why not write an article about what might happen if a unicorn ran across the field during a game? Or what would happen if a sasquatch played in the NFL?

Us common folks can make our ridiculous wild guesses around the water cooler all day long. We don't need the "experts" to do it for us.

I agree 100%. If for some reason Favre's arm isn't where it should be, I can see him trying to save face by claiming his conscience couldn't bring him to play for the Vikings, not his age.

Tried to drive through GB over the weekend, but there's some kind of plastic shield over the entire city, similar to those screens you put over the melon on the picnic table ...

  8. Big Stretch says: July 27, 2009 8:53 AM

I think at this point the Packers should let Favre fade away into NFL history. The 20 million dollas marketing deal should go the way of Brett's integrity, off into the green and yellow abyss somewhere.
Whether he plays or not this year I think the majority of the people on the inside of the football world and those of us who watch with absolute dedication to the sport have had enough of Brett Favre.

People have said that Favre behavior should not take away from his accomplishments on the field. To those people I say have you heard of Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds isn't hated becuase he took steroids, if that was the case half the majpr leaguers from the 85-00 would be hated just the same. Instead it was his me me me attitude, and at the end of his career it was his victim mentality that people could not stand.

Brett Favre should have been paying attention to how he conducted himself, instead he was hoping some down home folksy, " I just wanna ride my lawnmower" bullshit would be enough for people to embrace no matter what his behavior had been.

To Brett Favre i say, good luck on you mower and I hope I dont hear from you for another 5 years and then never again.

WOW....way to get his name on your front page once again! This may be the most incredible and obviously whoremongering of his name that you have ever practiced.....and that says alot.

BTW....TRUE Packer fans will never turn on him. True Packer fans know that Ted "alternative lifestyle" Thompson is the real Incubus. It's only those "johnny come lately" fans that don't remember the 70's and 80's that are ripping him. Tickets are awfully easy to come by in Green Bay now. Hotel rooms are there for the pickings on game day weekends. Pro Shop sales are down 50%. Don't blame it all on the economy.....there is a major boycott going on and it will continue until Ted Thompson takes the money he has stolen from the Packers and returns to the west coast where he can enjoy his alternative lifestyle in peace.

Florio et al.....most of the media has this wrong. Yes, there are some Packer fans that have turned on Favre. However, there are just as many that support him and have turned on Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and Mark Murphy. At the end of the day, Favre was lied to by Thompson. They(GB) didn't want him when he changed his mind and would not let him come back. ...not even to compete for the job. The very loyalty these fans expect from Favre was not displayed toward Favre and words like "the train has left the station" were uttered. This isn't as one sided as the media keeps making out...there is real unrest in GB.

  14. Fan_Of_ Four says: July 27, 2009 9:17 AM

The Packers should get on their knees and say we are sorry, we're sorry that we we hired Ted Thompson and Mark Murphy and we are sorry that they treated you like crap after you put Green Bay back on the map.

Brett doesn't need to strike a deal with the Packers since he owns the rights to his name and likeness and the Packers won't be able to make another dime off him without Brett's permission. If Brett needed or just wanted the money, he has a number of options which do not include kissing the Packers A$$es. Think I'm wrong ? Stop by the Packers Pro Shop or check out their web site, you won't find one Favre item for sale because they can't. The milking of the cash cow ended when Brett retired. If the Packers want to squeeze out some more milk it's the Packers who will have to crawl back and say please.

    Brett owes them squat.

  16. derekinmadison says: July 27, 2009 9:27 AM

Mike, this is a valid point, no matter what other commenters say. Favre might get $10 M from the Vikqueens with no guarantee that he makes the super bowl, and totally alienate all his Wisc fans. If he has any brains left, his people are telling him that fans in Wisc can't stand him anymore, and playing for the Vikqueens would be the last straw. If he decides to stay retired (again), he could potentially get twice as much money from the Packers for his marketing deal, and try to repair his relationship with the team and his Wisc fans. He is a selfish prima donna, so taking more money would be a viable option.

  19. VoxVeritas says: July 27, 2009 9:40 AM

Can't blame the Packers for making a plan to be without BertFarve and wanting to stick to it. What's it going to take to get you guys to realize that BertFarve's beyond washed up? His arm has been shot for a while. Not only is he not worth $10 million bucks a season, he's not worth any amount of money as anything but a backup because he can't go a full season anymore.

  20. empty13 says: July 27, 2009 9:43 AM

or better yet: Will Favre ever STOP trying to bury the hatchet in Green Bay, Ted Thompson, Mark Murphy, or Mike McCarthy?

  21. Fan_Of_ Four says: July 27, 2009 9:53 AM

    Derek

Favre could win two Super Bowls with the Vikings and he wouldn't alienate his true fans. Now Ted Thompson on the other hand has succeeded in this task, I know, I'm a Packer Fan going back to the early 70's, I should say former Packer fan since Thompson came along.

  22. bigfog says: July 27, 2009 10:03 AM

Fan of 4 is a complete moron. I can always count on him to spew forth some stupid comments and baseless information. But aside from that, there is no way I believe Brett cares about public opinion at the moment. Its pretty obvious isn't it? The only people that care are the vocal minority of bitter fans of the packers and the folks from Minny who are clinging to a hope that they are a qb away from the trophy.

  26. Professor says: July 27, 2009 10:31 AM

DePack and Fan_of_Four, you two are a retard. You have no idea what it's like to be a GM in the NFL. You obviously hate Thompson because he "drove out Favre." You have any idea how much of a pain in the ass Brett was the last few years he was in GB. I don't care who you are, no player has the right to try and throw his weight around like Favre did....demanding the front office sign certain free agents, demanding his own room to prep before each home game, retire and unretire year after year. Name one other player that does these kinds of things ans isn't considered an A-hole. You need to pull your heads out of your asses and decide, are you another one of those uneducated Favre fans or are you truely a Packer fan. To be a Packer fan means you root for the entire organization. You just want to walk around bitching about Brett, then take your ass to Minnesota.

Of course there are going to be some growing pains with a new QB, deal with it. I am a fan of a team. No matter who the GM is. Nowhere in my comment did I mention I was or wasn't a thompson supporter. Personally I like some of what TT does but a handful of decisions (nothing to do with favre) were stupid.

The problem lies with 2 groups of GB fans. Those who ardently oppose TT and worship #4, and those who now openly hate favre since he left. IMO both groups are idiots. You included.

  40. cheddar is beddar says: July 27, 2009 11:58 AM

It's simple, if the Packers went 10-6 last year, DePack would be singing a different tune. Typical lap dog bean bag.

What else do you know about those seven games that ended in a loss besides the fact that they went 0-7? Nothing I am assuming, because the record is easy to point to. But how many of those games did the Packers have a lead late in the fourth, yet our stellar defense gave up points, leaving Rodgers to try to mount a last minute comeback yet again? How many missed FG's that could have tied it or won it? The same argument you make against Rodgers for the 0-7 record could be used against our defense that sucked ball sack.

  41. GobiasINC_1 says: July 27, 2009 11:59 AM

DePack and Fan_Of_Four would still come out to Lambeau if Brent got hit by a fleet of riding lawnmowers and died, was signed by the Pack and started against Chicago. They'd be out there with their tongues hanging out of their mouths, clinging to one another and crying their eyes out cuz their guy is back!

Also, how come all Favre fans like these two geniuses sink to making gay jokes when it comes to making fun of the current form of the Packers? 'Thompson's alternate lifestyle.' Real classy, you scum bags. I'm sure you drop an 'Erin Rodgers' and laugh with the rest of your immature little buddies.

    ----------------------
You must mean TRUE Favre nut slurpers will never turn on him. Your comments and logic couldn't be more wrong. I remember the 70's and 80's, that's why I wanted to make sure that Rodgers remained in Green Bay AFTER Brett RETIRED. He would have had a right to be bitter and want out of GB and move on if they pulled the rug out from underneath him and the Packers wouldn't have known if they needed/wanted to sign him to keep from being a free agent. One more year of Favre was not worth missing out on the QB of the future for the next decade or not even knowing if you have that player on the roster to prevent the 70's and 80's from coming back.

Brett Favre RETIRED after the organization treated him with kid gloves and respect EVERY offseason giving him time to decide. You would think if anyone would know if retirement was what was in their heart, it would have been him. He then tried coming back in April and management welcomed him.... then 2 days later decided to stay retired. Of course he lied about that, said it never happened...even though his agent just confirmed that it did in fact happen that way earlier this spring when he contradicted his client/meal ticket.

Your alternative lifestyle BS regarding Thompson just shows your ignorance and the fact that you are not a TRUE Packer fan, but a Brett Favre nut slurping fool. Keep in mind, if Brett played for the Packers last year, his arm would have fallen off as well. All that would have happened is we wouldn't know if we have the QB of the future. Now we do.
