Favre will continue to keep throwing

You didn’t think he was going away that easily, did you?

While Brett Favre’s public comments appeared to close the door on another flip-flop, his phone conversation with NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci left a different impression.

Favre told Mariucci that he was retired, but he’s going to keep throwing and continue to work out.  (NFL Network’s Scott Hanson relayed the news on television and his Twitter account.)

When Mariucci asked how Favre would feel about his decision Wednesday morning, Favre reportedly said, “I’m wondering that myself.”

Hattiesburg’s most famous resident is spending Tuesday night out with his daughter in an effort to get away from everything.

But it sure sounds like he will go back to torturing the NFL public with indecision in the morning.

Does anybody else find it weird that the ESPN headline is “Favre Passes” on the same day Jim Johnson dies? They couldn’t come up with anything else?

Out of *all* the PFT comments I saw relating to Favre today, *one* dude said:
“I’ll believe it when he’s dead”
Props to that guy, whoever he was.

Favre retiring/un-retiring/retiring/un-retiring is the longest running joke in history. It’s hilarious. It would make the Marx Brothers and Three Stooges proud.

Favre has successfully shamed the family name by turning it into a verb and noun. Forever we will hear “I hope he doesn’t Favre the fans …”, every time an athlete ponders retirement. “Joe Smoe pulled a Favre by un-retiring 6 months after announcing his retirement” will be another example of Favre as a noun.
He has tainted his legacy. Not only will he go down as the most over-rated player in any sport, he also exits as a narcissistic buffoon.

  7. norcaldiscgolf says: Jul 28, 2009 8:31 PM

“…will continue to keep…” sounds redundant
Regardless… I don’t expect that he has left the game for good… all this statement did was give PFT, ESPN and all others another story

  8. Desides says: Jul 28, 2009 8:37 PM

Mariucci is one of the reasons why we have to deal with Favre Watch every year. Mariucci could tell Favre that enough is enough, and Favre might actually listen. Instead, Mooch keeps telling him “If you want to, keep playing.” No, Mooch. It’s time Favre retired for good, and if you really want to be his friend, you would stop lying to him.

  13. Hauschild says: Jul 28, 2009 8:50 PM

    LOVE IT!!!
Something just didn’t “seem” right to me – I mean, Favre has the surgery, gives an interview claiming “I can still play”, the arm feels good, witnesses claiming they’ve recently watched him throwing 50-yard throws on a rope…..
I think the man simply HATES training camp. I can’t think of anything else other than him stating today that he didn’t want the last 1/4 of the season to spiral out of control – to which I’d counter, “Who cares???” Worry about that if it occurs and go give ‘er hell!!!

Lord Farve’s M.O. is to avoid participating in training camp. The Vikes wanted him there on day one. That a no-no for the Lord of the INT. Wait until the preseason is underway, then we’ll be hearing from His Lordness again.

  22. Bob Loblaw says: Jul 28, 2009 9:25 PM

I have this strange feeling that Favre still wants to play for the Vikings and is gambling that they will hold the job open for him for a few more weeks.
He wants to play (hence the continued workouts), but doesn’t want to deal with the grind, hassle, and media circus of training camp. So he’s stalling by saying his body isn’t ready. As Hauschild pointed out, he did go through the surgery and rehab and all but included himself in talk about the Vikings.
Maybe he and Childress have an agreement and Childress is just
saying that the Vikings are moving on, knowing Favre will show up some time in preseason, because not saying the team is moving on would lead to too much distraction and speculation.
Or maybe Favre is taking his chances with Childress, but Childress is tired of the uncertainty and would rather go with who he knows will be there from Day One, rather than who may or may not waltz into town in a few weeks after the toughest part of training camp is over.

  23. JimmySmith says: Jul 28, 2009 9:31 PM

Its a conspiracy, the Packer management figured out a way to keep the Vikings in a state of confusion. First, act like you are going to interview Childress and forced the Vikings to hire that mental midget (check), next, low ball an offer to Sharper so he will suck in Purple for a few seasons (check) and now, cut Favre and make the Biqueens drool all off season ruining any chance their two exisiting Qb’s have of a successful season (check, check, and checkmate)
The Biqueens management proves once again why they haven’t been to a Superbowl in over 30 years, they are as dumb as a box of rocks, which is about 30 IQ points higher than Klink.

Come man, all that shit you put in your hair is getting to your head. You want to get a guy who considered a coach killer, dog killer, a damn criminal who hasnt played in over 2 years except for those longest yard games in jail? Why dont you post more articles on how Belicheck is damn cheater and the media ignores that instead of painting Favre the villan?

The guy is insane. When he retires (whenever that will be), I want him to become a movie writer because he can create drama better than anyone in Hollywood.
And BiQueens? WOW i never heard that but will use it every time i see my boy who is a fan of the vikings.

JimmySmith, you left off one of the Packers brillant moves:
Lowball Ryan Longwell, one of the most accurate kickers of the past decade, so the Vikings sign him, then lose games to the Vikings in which Longwell converts game-winning FGs at the end of regulation.

So you’re predicting the Vikings will be even better that the Packers were last year?

  36. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 28, 2009 10:46 PM

This is great. I live in Minneapolis and the entire state is in an uproar over the news. They’re practically mourning him even though he never stepped foot in Winter Park. One of the media people went as far as to say that it was a big joke by Childress who is just trying to show his lighter side. WTF????? Wishful thinking!
The good news is that Favre has distracted the Vikings all offseason, even up until the eve of training camp. All of their players threw the other QB’s under the bus by putting the full court press on Favre via text messages and now they have to do damage control. Not to mention the fact that every question T-Joke and Rosenfelds answered the past four months was about Favre.
With Favre still working out and throwing, T-Joke and Sage will be looking over their shoulder at a guy who isn’t even on the team. Yeah, this is going to end well!!

Game winning FG’s??? The Packers have beat the Vikings 5 out of the last 6 times. Longwell made one game winning field goal. He still sucked on kickoffs with the average kick being received at the 15 yd line and his last season was atrocious. I wouldn’t have overpaid for him either as a free agent. He had only 3 TB’s and he converted only 74% of his FG attempts. Meanwhile his replacement led the league in scoring and had 14 TB’s the following year as a rookie.

Just wondering; if he is staying retired, WTF does he need to keep on throwing FOR?????
Go home old man, go ride the tractor and mumble to yourself how you used to “be somebody”.

  42. CsanBoySmith says: Jul 28, 2009 11:40 PM

I’m pretty sure Brett doesn’t know what hell he’s going to do 15 minutes from now let alone a 16 week NFL season. And I do know that this is not the end of the Favre speculation (if you think that then this is the first time you’ve read a Favre article in 10 years).
I do know one thing, and that thing is that I have throw up in my mouth because for the 8th time in less than 3 years I’ve had “Favre’s Greatest Moments” “A Tribute to Brett Favre” “Brett Favre: The Timeline of Greatness” and such shoved down my throat. Seriously, go to any sports website or (eeeek) SportsCenter and you’ll know what I’m talking about. He retired from the Jets in March (and they ran all the same stories, highlights, etc). Did he come back or did I miss something? All he did was say “I’m staying retired” and E!SPN and every other sports media outlet runs Tributes to the guy. Insanely pathetic! You just did this to us for the 8th time in 3 years and the 2nd time in less than 5 months and I’m pretty sure his status (retired/unretired, re-unretired, re-re-retired, re-un-re-re-un-retir ed) has not changed. But, please, by all means, any time the guys hints at coming out of retirement or re-unretires, Please, please for the love of God, make sure you do not forget to run tribute after to tribute to the man.

You might be onto something, old boy. I’m telling you guys, something’s amiss and maybe it is planned to be that way.
Maybe – just maybe – Childress doesn’t care if Favre attends camp, but he also is hamstrung by the whining fans and 52 other players. So, Favre and Chilly strike a deal and when the offense struggles in pre-season, guess who’s suddenly available to hop aboard???
I can understand Brett not wanting to be in camp – one can imagine having to put up with guys in there 20’s and all that rigamaroll – what a pain that would be to an old guy.
Anyway, Favre proved last season that he’s a quick study and while working with the offense in training camp is probably a better idea, it isn’t a requirement.
    One for the Gipper, #4!!!
