Rams make their position clear on Vick

There had been reports that the Rams were interested in quarterback Mike Vick, given that G.M. Billy Devaney worked in the Falcons’ front office during much of Vick’s tenure.

But while Devaney might have fond memories of the good days involving Vick, Devaney was there for the bad times, too.  Maybe in the end he couldn’t get past the fact that Vick lied repeatedly about his lifestyle to the folks who paid him millions of dollars.

Regardless of the reason, Devaney has made it clear that the Rams don’t want Vick.

“No, no, no,” a reportedly “exasperated” Devaney said Tuesday, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  “That’s been beat to death.”

(Well, at least is wasn’t drowned, hanged, slammed to the ground, or electrocuted via a car battery attached to its testicles.)

Bottom line?  One of the potentially viable options for Vick is gone, and there aren’t a lot of viable options left.

By our count, it’s down as a practical matter to the Patriots, Steelers, Browns, Titans, Jaguars, Colts, Broncos, Vikings, Bears, and Saints.

Just make it official with zero. Of course it only take one, but this nonsense of teams declareing they are not interested is horseshit. PETA or not, society in general has spoken that we find an animals loss of life due to the ignorance of humans more discusting then human against human. Some team may sign him but there’s going to be a big price to pay.
I hear that his “phone has been ringing”, he must be delivering pizza.

    Thank God.

You can take the Saints off the list as Sean Payton said a while back that he doesn’t see Vick as a possibility and he doesn’t want to run the wildcat offense as he wants the ball going through Brees’ hand every play.

  4. drc says: Jul 29, 2009 12:55 AM

I bet Devaney might like to call a mulligan on his use of the phrase “That’s been beat to death” desribing anything that might have to do with Michael Vick.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if he ended up in Cleveland…..the Dog Pound

florio, when should you take what a team says at face value? NEVER
these teams posture all year long to get a guy signed at $1 cheaper, and to get a guy one pick earlier.
am i wrong to think that some of these teams are just saying they aren’t interested to try to squeeze vick if need be, to keep their current qbs content, or to keep their fanbase from outlashing? maybe i am, but we never take a gm’s word for what it is so why do so with vick?

I think you can remove everyone but the Titans, Jaguars, Broncos and Vikings. Those are the four teams who, in my mind, are in need of a longer term solution at QB and haven’t said no yet. I’d put the Steelers on that list, but if Big Ben isn’t facing criminal charges, it’s likely he won’t miss time unless it’s due to injury.
Everyone else is solid at the QB level for the next several years, so unless Vick is going to be strictly a backup, I don’t see him going to the Pats, Browns, Colts, Bears or Saints.

Perfect! Let’s keep goin’ and not stop until every NFL team says, “Piss off, Michael Vick!”

  10. MrNatural says: Jul 29, 2009 1:27 AM

I think that arena team from Midland, Texas that let go of Quincy what’s-his flake may need a QB. AFL II, is it?
There’s some good ‘ol boys out there that would love to have fun with a bad-ass Virginia fool.

You can’t take any of this seriously. EVERY TEAM is setting up smoke screens.
This is just like the Pre-Draft antics about who is gonna take who.

  14. Stone says: Jul 29, 2009 1:43 AM

Viking sign him or no one else. Possible dark horse team. Who wants the PR mess? I hope his career is over, tired of hearing about him. Most over-hyped QB ever!

  15. BadEnoughDude says: Jul 29, 2009 2:03 AM

Gotta think that the Pats are the front-runners for him at this point. I think they feel confident in their ability to assimilate “problem” players to their team.
On top of that, I gotta think Belichick an company could probably devise a pretty potent package of plays to utilize a talent like Vick. I can really see them tinkering with it during the regular season and then unleashing an expanded package for the playoffs. We know what kind of strategist Bill is, and I gotta think he’d relish the opportunity to uncage something new during the Super Bowl stretch run.

  16. riot401 says: Jul 29, 2009 2:25 AM

I really pray that the Rams steer clear of Vick. Even though Florio the homo wants to say Vick is comparable to Bulger he’s wrong on more than a few accounts. Though I do think that Mike Vick has paid his debt to society, I don’t want him on my team. If they were to do this, they would lose the bare bones fans that they have left. I think they are rebuilding, yes. No matter how much of a play maker Vick was, A:) He’s far older, B:) they need a QB, not an over hyped HB. If they wanted to trade for someone who can throw, why not just get LT and convert him to QB? After all, LT has thrown more TDs in two seasons than Vick has.

    Watch out for the Rooney’s!
Dan Rooney is the shrewdest owner in the NFL, and he is grooming his son Art II to follow in his footsteps.
He has Goodell, Dungy, and Tomlin as consultants on this issue, and you can be sure there is a lot of consulting going on.
If it can be done…Dan will do it!
(But watch out for that sneaky Belechick)

  18. sevendollarbologna says: Jul 29, 2009 5:15 AM

I’d like to see what the psychiatric tests are saying on this guy, I mean serial killers enguage in this kind of behavior.

  19. sevendollarbologna says: Jul 29, 2009 5:19 AM

Oh, P.S. I hope New England does not sign this guy, Like I said, Vick will probably have go to a non-libral place.–The South.

  20. alewatcher says: Jul 29, 2009 6:56 AM

All dressed up and no place to go. That would be sweet. Besides, why trust your offense to a guy who was convicted on illegal gambling charges, and is in massive debt? All too easy for one errant pass to swing a point spread, and Vick was the master of the errant pass.

  21. Pastabelly says: Jul 29, 2009 7:12 AM

And I agree with everyone else. He is more likely to sign with a team that has stated it doesn’t want him than the teams who say nothing. Florio, as a practical matter, you should eliminate the teams that have said nothing and include the other posers who say they have no interest as possible destinations for Vick. Do you really think the Patriots, Colts, or Steelers give a crap about Michael Vick enough to even comment?

  22. Coughlins Happy Pills says: Jul 29, 2009 8:16 AM

I think he signs with Minnesota if Favre doesn’t play.
Otherwise he goes UFL and then NFL next year.

  23. scomibord says: Jul 29, 2009 8:18 AM

I seem to remember Sean Payton sying about two months ago…NO MICHAEL VICK!!!

  24. Alfie says: Jul 29, 2009 8:21 AM

sevendollarbologna says: Vick will probably have go to a non-libral place.–The South.
What’s a non-libral place? Oh, you mean liberal. People in the south may be necks, but that just means they love their dogs even more, duncecap.
Might as well mark off Jacksonville Florio. I know it’s everyone’s favorite target, but new GM Gene Smith cleaned up the roster of guys with character issues (Porter, Florence, Williams, Barnes, M. Jones, etc) and made a point in the draft to go after high character guys. Going after Vick would just make him look like a giant hypocrite. Not to mention the owner, Weaver, nixed the idea of thinking about trading for Moss because he’s a “bad dude”, not in the 80′s way.

  25. Lucky5927 says: Jul 29, 2009 8:22 AM

Someone will take a chance on him. They just need to be reminded about his talent level by watching him in the UFL. Sure, he was an slightly above average quarterback before his jail time. But he is better than most back ups, and better than all of the 3rd stringers in the league.

  26. COACHMAC says: Jul 29, 2009 8:29 AM

    Vikings all the way.
    1. Cheaper than Favre
    2. Wilf family is that desperate to win
    3. Run first, ball control offense important late in NFC North road games.
    4. Vick spent entire career in a Dome.
    5. T Jack, Vick, AP, and Chester Taylor would be most dominant RB/QB run threat in NFL
    6. The possibility of running the Wild Cat and having TWO players on the field who have the potential to throw(although not always accurate). Coupled with the best down hill runner in the game, would be impossible to game plan for.
IF any teams take a flyer on Vick, this is the only one that makes sense. Other than the Vikings, the Jaguars would be the only other option, due to the location, fan base, and lack of consistency at QB. You could make an arguement for the Titans, but if you want an QB with arm strength, inability to read a defense, no accuracy, but ability to make plays with his feet. Just look on the bench.
All others have franchise QB’s where the Vick fiasco would just created distractions for otherwise, playoff bound teams.

  27. bear0402 says: Jul 29, 2009 9:05 AM

It is highly doubtful that the Vikings will sign him either. 1) Minnesota is a very conservative state. 2) Because they are trying to get a new staduim, and Minnesota is a very conservative state. 3) Minnesota already has a guy that runs very well and has an inaccurate arm, Adrian Petersen.
Also, lets not forget that it could be as late as week 6 before he is allowed back into the league. Who is going to want to bring in a new QB at week 6?
About the only teams that would be a fit, whether they want him or not, are the Broncos and Jaguars.

  28. bear0402 says: Jul 29, 2009 9:09 AM

Do you honestly think he is going to sign with any team and not demand to be the starting QB? Or demand Starting QB money? He’s got to get himself out of bankruptcy too.

  29. gogirl says: Jul 29, 2009 9:26 AM

Steelers would never. The fans wouldn’t put up with it; nor would the Rooneys.

MasterShake, so are you saying that if I killed your goldfish, that would disturb you more than if someone harmed your best friend? That statement proves how utterly ridiculous this whole situation is.
A man was murdered outside a baseball game in Philly. One of the guys who killed him had a previous charge of stabbing a guy 4 times. But he got out of jail in 6 months. Vick got 2 years for some non-human, non-soul dogs.
Harming animals a terrible. Harming humans is worse.
Oh yeah, if Vick could help any of your teams win the Super Bowl, you would sign him up in an instant. I know I would.
