Packers, Matthews strike a deal

The Green Bay Packers had two first-round picks this year.  One of them is now in the fold.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers have agreed to terms with linebacker Clay Matthews, the 26th overall selection in round one.

Silverstein reports that the five-year deal has a base value of $10 million, with a high-end package potential of $13.275 million.

The Packers’ only remaining unsigned pick is defensive lineman B.J. Raji, the ninth overall selection in the draft.

    He’ll be a back-up all year.
What a reach and a wasted 1st round pick.
That’s like 2 in 5 years if you include Hawk

    RagnartheViking,
Hey, Hawk had the long drive in the long drive contest at that celebrity golf tournament a couple weeks ago. I don’t know if we can call him a bust.

You mean 3 in 5, you forgot Harrell. Also, if you consider that TT’s first pick as a Packer GM in 05 wasn’t a contributor in the 07 campaign when they were an OT away from the SB, that is 4 in 5. And depending on how Raji does, it could still be 5 out of 5 busts.
But TT is such a great draft expert. sure, lol

Imagine that! Ragnar the Viking (and apparent NFL Scout) thinks that the Packers pick is a bad pick!
Percy Harvin is an injury prone druggie and won’t make it three years in this league, he’ll take the Charles Rogers route.
Phil Loadholt will come to camp overweight and will never be in shape enough to take the starting RT job.
Adrian Peterson will go back to his injury prone ways next year, reminding him of college.
You have Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels as your starting QB.

Lebowski, obviously youre not a golfer!
No, it all starts with Tony Mandarich over barry Sanders.
Shot of Ginn? Shot of crack, all baselees ” hoping to happen predictions” be cause if that happens, then the Pack don’t have to actually beat the full sterength Vikes.

Man there are some dumb fans on this forum when it comes to football. And surprise, surprise they are mainly Vikings fans or Ted Thompson haters.
Yeah, the Packers should already cut Matthews and not draft anyone else from this point forward, right geniuses? Thompson sucks! Those bums Rodgers and Jennings really are lousy. And Hawk has not started every single game since coming into the league. Bums, I tell you, all bums!!!!
Hey, Ragnar, the Vikings are REAL experts at drafting. Erasmus James and Troy Williamson are tearing it up! Also, at least Ted Thompson can draft a quarterback.
Good luck with Tavaris Rosenfelds this year. As for you Thompson haters, your Southern Fried pal, Favre is not coming back. Accept it.

  22. Qoojo says: Jul 30, 2009 3:24 PM

Come on guys give Vagnar a break. She needs it since she is a fan of team that has never been relevant in the history of the NFL. Also, this is her high point of the season since the vikings have “won” every off-season this decade according to their fans. Heck, they almost scored a huge win in getting Favre this off-season, which would have surely gave them the superbowl. hahaha

  23. lskynard87 says: Jul 30, 2009 3:24 PM

The Packers and Vikings are about even keel when it comes to Boom/Bust prospects…
    Bad
    Troy Williamson – Ahmad Carroll
    Yet to be Determined
    Tyrell Johnson – Jordy Nelson
    Good
    Adrian Peterson – Nick Barnett
    EJ Henderson – Nick Collins
I’m not relating the years of the draft, just the current status of the player and the impact thereof.

  24. TiltnSpill says: Jul 30, 2009 3:26 PM

    @Ragnar
Last I checked the superbowl trophy was still named the Lombardi Trophy….
    Packers – 3 Vikings – 0
Oh.. congratz on winning the division for the first time since 1998.
But continue to mock TT’s draft picks.

  25. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 30, 2009 3:39 PM

    @RagnartheViqueen,
It actually starts with the Hershel Walker trade. You know, the one that gave the Cowboys 3 Super Bowl trophies that you don’t have?
    Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1991 (21)
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1990 (47)
    Minnesota’s 6th round pick in 1990 (158)
    Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1991
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1991
    Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1993
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1992
    Minnesota’s 3rd round pick in 1992
Good god! Look at that. Name ONE player in the NFL right now that you would even give 1/4th of those picks for. It looks even more ridiculous now after looking it up.

  28. Rossum20 says: Jul 30, 2009 3:46 PM

The classless Viking fans are commenting about our draft picks? HAHAH god Viking fans are about as dumb as they come.
AJ Hawk is not a bust…he had a sub par season in which he was injured for most of it.
A recent article had multiple players on the Packers D noting the monster difference between Sanders of last year and Capers this year…noting that Capers understanding is 110% and he can actually answer the players’ questions…something Sanders scarily could not do.
Hawk’s talents will be utilized in the 3-4…by the end of the season when your uncommitted fruitcake WR is injured/ineffective, we can talk then.
Greg Jennings, James Jones, and Jordy Nelson are better than any of your lame ass WR’s in Minny…we are hearing the same talk about Harvin as we did with Williamson…the difference? The Packers receivers produce.
Your QB is Sage Rosenfels, your players are completely divided on who should be the starter, and your coach sold out on Favre and now is backpedaling like crazy to pretend it makes no difference.
    SAGE ROSENFELS….god that’s hilarious.
It’s clear most of you have no idea why TT is considered a draft expert…you act as though any “bust” is an impossibility with an expert. TT was awarded the BEST GM IN ALL OF THE NFL in 2008…who voted? The fans like for the pro bowl? No. By all the other GM’s in the league. He won by a landslide. Of course, wtf do the other GM’s in the league know, right? After all, you clearly have a higher understanding of the game.
Define bust…AJ Hawk is not a bust. I can’t believe I have to explain these elementary terms to Vikings fans. Tony Mandrich? Yes, bust. Can’t figure out the difference? Of course not, you’re a Vikings fan.

  29. CsanBoySmith says: Jul 30, 2009 4:03 PM

No, it all starts with Tony Mandarich over Barry Sanders.
Wow, good burn Ragnar. Yep, Packers fans have been devastated about the Manarich thing for the last 20 years, they still lose sleep. Idiot. Talk about the here in now. If you want to talk about the past then just start blabbing about how the Vikes had a chance to tie the Bills record of 5 SB losses if they would have acquired Brettny.

  30. DiverDown says: Jul 30, 2009 4:17 PM

Rossum20: Hell yeah, dude. If there’s one thing so unnerving and unrelenting, it’s the platitudes of ridiculousness that serve Vikings’ fans so well. I forgot about “Ragnar the Viking”, however, he truly is “brilliant and all that”.
Thompson did not come out and win the hearts of many early on. He took his time, looked over a roster that needed depth and an injection of talent, made a crucial and unmitigated decision that ultimately prevented the team from falling back 4-5 years.
The Packers also have a coach that knows how to effectively communicate with his players, and a defense that, in 2-3 years, should be absolutely dominant. Young players abound, but young players do get better, and we have a D-coordinator who will approach this system with the verve and intensity he demands from his players.
Meanwhile, Vikings can play Chilly-ball, and know that their window is closing even as they portend to declarations of Super Bowl wishfullness.
Oh, and Ragnar: Packer fans are and always will be extremely knowledgeable in most every aspect of football.

I have an uneasy feeling about Matthews. I have a feeling that TT fell in love with the family football DNA (who wouldn’t the Matthews family have been dependable iron men), his feel good walk on story and forgot to judge him just on his game. The footballing gods will make the pack pay for this and Clay will be an injury riddled underachiever.
