Ed Reed activated to practice

Baltimore Ravens All-Pro free safety Ed Reed was activated from the physically unable to perform list today, but remains off-limits to contact.

However, Reed is wearing a red jersey during practice. That signifies that he’s off-limits to contact drills.

Reed is dealing with a nerve impingement of his neck and shoulder, but still intercepted nine passes last season to lead the league.

Reed acknowledged that he has contemplated retirement due to his condition.

“Just to hit on [wide receiver Derrick] Mason, I feel him,” Reed said. “He had two surgeries and just with going through other things emotion-wise, it’s hard. I’ve been contemplating sitting out for the last two years and hanging up the cleats and stuff.

“When you start to think about those things, you start to put things in perspective. You start looking for other things to do outside of football.”

Despite his lingering injury, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and five-time Pro Bowl selection said he remains committed to playing football.

“I mean I love this game,” Reed said.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said that the Ravens want to be cautious about not exposing Reed to injury.

“We just don’t want to put it in a situation where we take a chance,” Harbaugh said. “We don’t need to. Ed knows how to tackle.”

I also heard that Reed remains off-limits to contact.
In fact, although he can practice he’s unable to engage in contact drills.
And I think I read somewhere that he’s not supposed to do any hitting or being hit.

“Ed knows how to tackle.” The understatement of the century, along with “Ed knows how to defend the pass” “Ed knows how to defend the rush” “Ed knows how to intercept the ball” et al.
THE premiere safety in the NFL. Perhaps the best of all time. I love A-Dub(Adrian Wilson) of the Cardinals, but “Dubya” has NOTHING on Mr. Reed.
God speed and good luck, Ed. We’ll see you in the Super Bowl. Final score- Ravens 20, Cardinals 27.*
*If Warner gets injured, Cardinals lose Wild Card game. Leinart sucks(beer bongs).

Ed Reed is the best safety in the world. He deserves to be able to sit out of contact drills. I was at the practice this morning and my favorite Raven (Ed Reed) looks like he’s in great shape and ready to roll. Please come back Mason or we need to give up that 1st & 3rd for Boldin

Ed Reed…the 2nd best safety in the AFC North.

Troy Polamalu…the 2nd best safety in the AFC North.
    There. Fix that for ya.

Stiller43…..well we know Troy is second to Ed Reed..so if Ed the second best who is the best???
Truth is they are both awesome….I think it is safe to say they are probably the 2 best safeties to ever play the game. I would take either one on my team….but I am partial to Ed Reed as you are to Troy…

On the other hand, Ed Reed will be off-limits to contact drills.
But when you really get down to it, Baltimore safety Ed Reed will be off-limits to contact.

Woa…we’re proclaiming Polamalu and Reed the to best safeties of ALL TIME now??
Ronnie Lott hit harder then Polamalu and Covered better then Reed.. 10 Pro bowls, as CB, FS and SS. 4 Super Bowls… That’s like Polamalus and Reeds accomplishments put together and then some…

I love these debates of who is better……Troy or Ed.
That just does not make sense….They do not play the same position, their roles on thier specific teams are completely different. Even if thier roles were the same they would still be 2 obviously different players…..fact is they would be devistating together, and they are both very good for thier respective teams.
I think the Ravens depend on Ed more than the Steelers depend on Troy but overall both of those players make a significant difference to thier teams……stop the debate…..you cant compare apples to oranges. Well you can but then you just sound dumb

Actually Ed Reed used to play strong safety and incidentally, Troy Polamalu didn’t make 1st team all-pro until Reed switched to free safety.

I never said Reed was the best safety ever. That’s ridiculous. Ronnie Lott without question. Reed is however, the best in the world “right now”. Troy should thank Ed Reed for being a role model type figure to him lol. Adrian Wilson is better than Troy which makes him the 3rd best safety in the league……….MAYBE.
I don’t make excuses for losing to the Steelers 3 times. They were better and they deserved the Super Bowl. I would much rather lose to a champion than to some scrubbs who go out and lose the next game. I do wish that Rex Ryan would’ve played a more aggressive defense. He didn’t show faith in our players.
I’m happy Mason is back. I hope Demetrius Williams is healthy because he could be a valuable deep threat to Flacco (The Real Rookie of the Year). I’m soooooo excited for this season.

Oh FFS….Polamalu and Reed are both GREAT players, who play different positions. They are both pretty much the best at what they do in modern day NFL. They both respect the hell out of each other and that’s enough for me to respect them both equally. I think it’s great that arguably 2 of the best defenses the league has ever seen comes out the AFCN. I hate the Ravens b/c they are rivals, but I respect the hell out of them b/c they are worthy rivals. The Steelers and Ravens are truly two teams in the league that play the game the way it should be played, and I’m glad to be a fan of that.
As to the article, that’s wonderful that Reed is able to participate in camp this year. I hope he’s able to have a healthy season.
