Vick rumors get a second life

Just when we thought we were out . . . another Michael Vick-to-Patriots rumor pulled us back in.

Minutes after we posted what we thought was our final Vick rumor squashing post of the afternoon, Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald sent PFT a whopper.

Darlington cites a “very reliable NFL source” that Vick was on the field in Foxborough at 3:30 p.m. working out for the Patriots.

Wow.  [Editor's note:  Well put, young Jedi.  Well put.]

The information is at odds with everything else we’ve learned Friday, so something is amiss.

Vick was reportedly in Virginia Friday at a bankruptcy hearing.  And our own Tom Curran says you can “rule out” Vick being in Foxborough.

Furthermore, we’ve learned that Patriots players were arriving for their second practice of the day at 3:30 p.m., with reporters present.  Bill Belichick followed shortly thereafter around 3:45 p.m.  (The Patriots also have a separate indoor practice bubble, for what it’s worth.)

Darlington has been banging the Vick-to-Patriots drum for a few days now, and he is one of the best beat writers around.  [Editor's note:  But maybe not after today.]

So he’s either way ahead of the pack and the Patriots have done an incredible job covering the story up or he’s getting bad information.

We’ll find out soon enough.

Maybe they just want to 1 up the Dolphins and their wildcat package that includes Pat White. Take that, Parcells!

It does make sense… There are only two NFL Franchises who are secure enough with their respective fan bases to sign this guy are Pitt. and NE.

Is it possible Vick has a double, like Saddam did?
If great minds think alike, why not evil ones?
I’ll be bummed if this over-rated over-hyped character-less scumbag bum doesn’t go to the Vikings, the over-rated overhyped character-less scumbag bum franchise of the NFL.

Who knows if this is true or not. But I definately believed that Vick was visiting the Pats today or sometime this w/e, when he was very secretive about what teams were interested. BB would have told Vick and his agent, any word to the press/friends etc, and the whole deal would be over before it even started. Just a feeling the Vick would have been blabbing if it were any other team.

Unreal. Brett Favre is a free man and can’t make up his mind.
Michael Vick is behind bars, serves his time, gets out and finds a job quick.
Lesson here: We should of put Favre in jail the past 2 offseasons.
If Vick story is true though, watch out 1972 Dolphins.

Come on Invaiduh, he did not kill anything give him a break. The killer was in cleveland and he got 27 days in jail. Vick gets 18 months for killing nothing.

  16. MaxLax3031 says: Jul 31, 2009 4:50 PM

Alright. So as a Pats fan I absolutely love the idea of getting Vick. He would absolutely terrorize the league if the ran the wildcat offense. Scary good. Also if anyone else remembers Tom Brady took a serious injury last year. Ya it’s been a year to recover. But why not have a Mike Vick to back him up and take some snaps to maybe help keep that knee in working condition. In all Bill and Bob should ink him soon

  23. msteelers says: Jul 31, 2009 5:00 PM

I don’t get the Pit or NE talks as possible landing places for Vick, unless he doesn’t play as a QB. Are you really telling me that the Pats are going to take the ball out of Brady’s hands? Why would they do that? Last time he played a full season they had the most potent offense in years.
Vick doesn’t make either team better, and Vick wont put any additional butts in the seats, since both teams have rabid fanbases. So what’s the point?

  29. jbwbubba says: Jul 31, 2009 5:09 PM

Vick to the Pats would be a disaster for the league. If he went to the Bengals or Raiders and languished in mediocrity it wouldn’t be that much of a problem. Sure PETA folks would protest, but you might not hear much more about it. If one assumes that the Pats will be real contenders this year with Brady back it equals a PR nightmare for the NFL. For a felon to get a chance at a ring, even if Vick plays only sparingly; Vick in the playoffs would be bad, Vick in the Superbowl would be a disaster.

  30. DarthPirate says: Jul 31, 2009 5:09 PM

  37. Zinn says: Jul 31, 2009 5:20 PM

This idea of Vick suddenly terrorizing the league running the wildcat offense is a bit overblown. Vick ran the wildcat offense while in Atlanta and as long as Vick can run the ball he will run a form of the wildcat. The man had 1039 yards rushing in 2006.
I doubt he will he get better than 2006. How much explosion and speed does he have left after almost 3 years off. I am sure he will be fast. But not as fast. Sort of like how Ali looked after his 3 year layoff. He was still fast but nothing like what he was. Love or Vick or hate him he was one of the most exciting players to ever play this game. It would be nice to see him come back and be as exciting as he used to be. But 3 years off is asking quite a lot. I would suspect he will have to come back as a more traditional type of QB.

    Michael Vick thoughts
Link|Comments (4) Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 31, 2009 05:15 PM
Sometimes a rumor grows to the point that refuting it benefits the public interest. Whether that is the case with today’s buzz regarding Michael Vick and a possible union with the Patriots is subject for debate.
Michael Vick enters a U.S. District courthouse today in Newport News, Va. (AP)
My feeling is that some clarity would help.
This is what I know, and feel strong enough to put my name behind: Vick did not work out for the Patriots today, he is not scheduled to work out for the Patriots in the future, and he is not under consideration to be signed to the team.
(Update 5:22 p.m. — The Patriots are now confirming that Vick was not in New England today, which is in response to a Miami Herald blog post)
Bill Belichick’s responses today in his press conference might have stoked the rumors a bit, but I think he was just following his standard script when it comes to an available player. If he publicly ruled out a player, he’d be setting a precedent that he wouldn’t want in future cases.
In this case, Michael Vick is not coming to New England.

Wow, you guys are so clever…”the cheaters”…haha…”Belicheat”….that’s a new one…yawn…you guys are so predictable…and the thought of having “the cheaters” and the “criminal” together…what a wet dream for you guys…you all should really think about getting your own agents cause you guys are hillarious…you may as well ride that tired horse all year cuz the reality that most of your teams seasons is only about 17 weeks long must really suck. But, I forgot, the Pats season is usually longer cuz we cheat….hahaha…where’s the camera?!

I remember the sickening feeling fans around the NFL had when we heard that Moss was joining up with Brady…albiet, the loss the superbowl, but they were more potent than we had even feared. Does anyone think that The Genius that resides under the hood, would not maximize Vick to his best capabilities? And although Vick may not be the most accurate passer, you name another Wildcat offense that will have someone back there, that can actually disguise the formation, and throw it loooong? No one else. The possibilities are endless here….so…Tomlin, if you can hear me…better bring him to Steeler Town…you will regret the letting Vick learn from a true master.

  49. Desides says: Jul 31, 2009 5:49 PM

    “Take that, Parcells!”
eeerockski, Parcells didn’t conceive or introduce the Wildcat. Tony Sparano asked QB coach David Lee, who used to be the OC at Arkansas, if he had any ideas to improve the team after the week 2 blowout loss to the Cardinals. Lee gave OC Dan Henning some Wildcat plays, and the scheme debuted the next week against the Cheatriots.
And frankly, given how Belicheat couldn’t figure out how to counter the Wildcat during that game–he certainly spent enough time on his dry erase board to no avail–I doubt they could run the Wildcat effectively with Vick. After all, the Wildcat operates on the threat of passing the ball to create running room, and few people respect Vick’s passing.

Desides, you don’t know your ass from your elbow. The Wildcat ran well in game 1, but in game 2 it was completely shut down. Show your hand once to BB and you may beat him on that hand, but not the second time. How well did the “Cat” work against Baltimore in the playoffs?
The Wildcat is a gimmick, and to get desperate and waste a 2nd round draft choice on a sub par QB that you hope can make it work is a laugh.

Ralphie, consider that Belicheat is supposedly interested in Vick because they wanted Pat White for purposes of running the Wildcat and missed out on him precisely because the Dolphins selected him.
Further, my remark about Belicheat not being able to figure out the Wildcat was limited to the week 3 matchup. Belicheat, the supposed master of halftime and on-the-fly adjustments, could not figure the Wildcat out during regulation play. No, in the second 2008 matchup against the Dolphins, Ronnie Brown did not explode for 4 TDs against the Patriots again. The damage was done: that week 3 game proved to be a major factor in the Dolphins beating out the Patriots to win the AFC East and make the playoffs. Belicheat’s supposed genius failed him at a critical moment. Go back and watch the tape: Belicheat spent a lot of time obsessively scribbling on a dry-erase board trying to figure out what the hell he was up against.
Looking forward to the Dolphins winning the division again.

  57. Ralphie says: Jul 31, 2009 8:12 PM

“…consider that Belicheat is supposedly interested in Vick because they wanted Pat White for purposes of running the Wildcat and missed out on him precisely because the Dolphins selected him.”
Consider that comment will go down as a classic urban legend based out of Miami. Miami fans with their delusions of grandeur love to spin that yarn, but the reality is the Pats had a pick in the 2nd round (34) well ahead of Miami. If they wanted White they would have taken him. The Wildcat was an embarrassment against BMore–it’s been figured out and it has no legs—Miami was grasping at straws wasting that 2nd round pick.
Please post the link to “the tape” with BB “obsessively scribbling on a dry-erase board” I think I may have missed that one. I guess that would be a first however because NFL coaches never work on diagramming plays, or countering an opposing teams strategy during a game—I’ve never heard such a crazy thing.
Like I said, you don’t know your ass from your elbow.

    =====================================
All the Pats fans out there grasping at straws to try and deflect attention away from the fact that your team cheated by calling Big Ben an “accused rapist” need to just accept that your team cheated, as CJR seems to have done.
First off, Ben has not truly been accused of anything, or there would be a criminal complaint. Accused means, to me anyway, that there is going to be a trial, which at this point there isn’t. All I see there, so far, is a chick who looks like Ben’s twin sister trying to catch a payday.
The Patriots are proven cheaters. There is no comparison. Get over yourselves and just let the tears that you’ve been holding back for 2 years with the help of your replica sleeveless hoodies come. Accept the fact that everything the Patriots have done has an asterisk next to it – not because they cheated, but because they were stupid enough to get caught.
I swear, do they have a BB camp for spinning the truth in your own mind up there in NE or what?

  59. rick says: Jul 31, 2009 9:18 PM

Pats fans acknowledge the spygate stuff…but come on guys, do you really think that your teams are full of boyscouts? Do you really believe that only Belichick has bent some of the rules to gain a competetive advantage? I am a Pats fan to the core, but the blanket statements about cheating are really just plain silly at this point. Do a single one of you have any idea what’s really going on within your teams organization? How do they prepare for games? What are their scouts are up to? It’s easy to gang up on the bad-guys with everybody else….and that includes “bad guys” like Vick. And Vick, just like the Pats for spygate, have paid their debt…so at the end of the day, it’s about winning football games….and NE wins alot of them.
