Now that I’ve finally gotten out of the law business, I’m reminded of how lucrative the law business can be.
The lawyers handling quarterback Mike Vick’s bankruptcy case initially were seeking a whopping $2.66 million in fees, according to the Newport News Daily Press.
$2.66 million!?! (I’m uttering the phrase repeatedly, with my best Emmitt Brown incredulity.)
As Vick’s personal attorney Lawrence Woodward (who frankly deserves plenty of his own scrutiny and criticism for not finding a way to clean up Vick’s dogfighting mess with a quick plea deal in Virginia before the feds got involved) recently argued in opposition to the claim for fees that the petition requested compensation for 7,200 hours of attorney time is the equivalent of one lawyer working on the case 24 hours straight for 300 days.
The lawyers thereafter reduced their claim to $1.5 million.
What a bargain.
The reduced fee still needs to be approved as part of the broader bankruptcy plan.
Good Luck getting that money! There is a better chance that Favre Plays for Green Bay again.
Does this article have anything to do with football, pro football, or talk of pro football?
As soon as Vick throws a pass or runs for a first down, for a professional football team, feel free to talk about that instead.
He is a convicted felon who used to play professional football.
exactly why people hate on lawyers, they take advantage of people.
LOL…. won’t get their money????? R U kidding? the scumsuckers are first in line, they’ll get their $$$$$
If they had been competent enough to get him off, then I’d say 2.66m to keep a 120m contract would have been a bargain.
A lawyer’s mantra is that they aren’t the ones going to jail and as long as they get paid who gives a shit.

Oh, ok. We get it now. What you’re saying is, you’re too stupid to just skip stories that don’t interest you, right?
Go start your own blog.
Bankruptcy court should pay attention – These greedy lawyers are so confident in Vick making some cash – That they look at him like an investment..

Considering you made no comments about the article either, maybe you should take your own advice.
I joined this site because it is called Pro Football Talk. I wanted to comment on pro football. If I wanted to comment on the American legal system, I would’ve joined that site instead.
If you want to diss my football knowledge or favorite team or ANYTHING to do with pro football, feel free.
I love the legal discussions on PFT because nobody else does it better, and it’s obviously a huge part of the business of the NFL, but yeah the lawyers come across like the blood-sucking vultures they are.

So by your logic, no free agent should ever be discussed, nor should any college player about to become a top draft pick in the NFL, because they are not someone who “throws a pass or runs for a first down, for a professional football team”?
This has everything to do with professional football, because it is Michael Vick, the highest profile free agent in the NFL universe. He most likely will play in the NFL again (and even if he doesn’t, that will be HUGE NFL news), and his bankruptcy case has everything to do with the content and structure of his next NFL contract.
Do us a favor and take your moronic, whiny comments somewhere else.
moezilla is a raging idiot.

Except I wasn’t bitching about the content of the article. I was instead commenting on your inability to simply skip articles that don’t interest you rather than whine about the content.
It’s like those idiots who complain about what’s on the radio rather than taking 2 seconds to simply change the dial. Either accept it or move on. it’s really not that hard.
Hey moezilla & Spartachris,
you guys know cockfighting is just as illegal as dog fighting is? You guys get a room, or knock it off
Moezilla, Florio can post anything he wants to because it is his site. If this offends you that much, unjoin (which makes zero sense because you don’t have to join this site to read the articles) and Florio won’t bat an eye. And, yes, this has as much to do with profootball as Marvin Harrison and his gun troubles, or Plax and his shinanigans, or the news of any retired or former football player. Or should Florio not comment on any free agents or off -field problems (which I wouldn’t mind if he did) any more because they also don’t fit the criteria you laid out. And once again, if you’re upset that his FREE site is not giving you 100% pro football talk (when the story is relevant to pro football) go create your own site where you can rectify this injustice. Otherwise, child please.
Let me see if I understand you correctly Moezilla:
1. You came to PFT for only one reason, to read about football stuff.
2. You saw an article titled “Vick’s bankruptcy attorney wanted….”
3. You thought to yourself, “I am only here for football stuff, this article would be a waste of time because the title of the article clearly states that it is about Vick (a convicted felon, not a football player) and his attorney (also not a football player).
4. For some unknown reason you clicked on the link, read the article and validated your earlier opinion that the article indeed was a waste of your time.
5. You then thought to yourself “This article was such a waste of my time, I need to take more time to let others know how much I disliked it”
6. you then typed out a comment that in and of itself was also a waste of time when you used the words “football, pro football or talk of pro football”. Clearly, you were just trying to make a point about the name of the website, but let’s be honest with each other, all you really needed to say was “football”.
7. Then SpartaChris made a rather clever and insightful reply to your post. He may or may not have been wasting his time, and I also believe he is not a pro football player, but I’ve never met him so I don’t know.
8. At this point you actually CAME BACK to the article 1 hour and 35 minutes later to see if anyone had commented on your comment. This was perhaps the biggest waste of your time EVER. I have to question what you did during that hour and 35 minutes, although it is most likely not relevant.
9. You decided to rebuke SpartaChris and tell him that you came to this site because you wanted “to comment on pro football.” But instead you spent the last 3 hours reading and commenting on an article that according to you has nothing to do with pro football.
10. And last, and certainly least, you are probably now reading this post and preparing a scathing remark of my obvious genius and extremely handsome face.
Just to make this comment appropriate I will add two comments – one will be relevant to the article and the other will have to do with Pro football. In this I hope to please both Mike Florio and Moezilla.
1. Any good bankruptcy attorney gets his money up front.
2. Moezilla – your favorite team sucks.
heheheheheh
Moezilla is feeling the wrath of the NFJ(not the fruity juice) nation.
Welcome to the big show, n00b. No one puts down our fearless leader. Notice how he never even had to respond to your useless BS? He’s got us, his minions, to take care of people like you.
You’ll be sad, you’ll cry, you’ll rebel… Then you’ll realize life sucks without NFJ(Not the Fruity Juice) and you’ll come back in two weeks and act right.
Long live King Florio!
(And Princess Erin Wilson)
It’s funny because not too long ago Kidekkk was Moezilla. Good to see he has learned the error of his ways.
now THAT had nothing to do with PRO Football Moe.
It’s very easy to trash lawyers. However if one
investigates before hiring an Attorney or obtain referrals, there are many good lawyers who will work for a reasonable rate. That did not happen with Vick. The issue is that many times people are in trouble and don’t have time to get a referral, shop around or negotiate billable hours. Moreover lawyers seem to know exactly what they can legally get away with (any amount). The Judge indicates that the billable hours are not justified and the firm responds; Sorry we will lower our profit. The law firm is not charged with theft…….and so it goes. It’s a business and the law firm makes a profit on the billable hours for their employees (lawyers) work.
Sounds like Vick’s attorneys follow the billing plan Grisham described in his book – The Associate.
yes, the lawyers are also creditors. and the creditors are some of those banging the drums to get vick back in the nfl.
cause otherwise they wont get paid plus inetrest.

Eddie, I’ll still coment when Florio posts crap that is pure conjecture and made up for the benefit of drawing clicks (which I completely understand because he is running a business, but is still somewhat scumbaggian being as he can ruin/influence the perception of players without any consequence [ie. calling Vontae Davis a thug when he wasn't even arrested] then chalk it up to his site being a rumor mill when the premise/success of his site was actually built on breaking news based 0n credible sources).
And no, I wasn’t Moezilla because I was commenting on the wording and tone of the stories that would jump to conclusions, that were actually speculation (ie. looking at the last 8 games of Mike Vick’s last two seasons when you could apply the same logic to one of Brett Favre’s and two of Eli Manning’s consecutive seasons or any QB that collapses late in the season whether it be mental or due to a tougher schedule/matchups/a whole myriad of things and then having readers take that as gospel because it comes from, as you like to call him, “King Florio’s” mouth). Moezilla is just an idiot who can’t use simple logic to see how this story is relevant in a number of ways to pro football, especially given the other crap articles that are posted on this site (like an article written by Josh Alper in which the headline would make you think that Tom Brady hurt his knee again, but, instead, was a story about how Tom Brady fell out of a kayak, like every one else who is not an expert kayaker would do; great piece of journalism right up there with Jared Allen spilling his beer).
The fees are high so they can kick back some to vick. You know that’s true florio
