Raiders shopping Burgess, again

The Oakland Raiders tried to trade defensive end Derrick Burgess during the offseason.

They couldn’t swing a deal for him.

Now that Burgess is holding out, the Raiders will try again.

According to RaiderBeat.com, the team is attempting to find a new home for Burgess, who is entering the final season of a contract with which he has been dissatisfied for a couple of years.

It might take an injury elsewhere to get a deal done.  Last year, an apparent impasse between the Dolphins and defensive end Jason Taylor quickly was resolved after the injury bug hit the Redskins, who gave up a second-round pick for a one-year rental of the 2006 NFL defensive player of the year.

And now Taylor is back in Miami after being cut by the Redskins earlier this year.

As to Burgess, a trade is a little trickier since he also might want a new deal before reporting.  Currently, he’s scheduled to earn $2 million in 2009.

The Patriots and the Eagles were linked to Burgess earlier this year.

How about some rumors about a player that should be wanted by the Patriots here. I hear Burgess was spotted on a plane to Foxboro this morning. Anyone else hear anything?

Burgess should be in and getting ready to go on a huge salary drive. Always liked him, but if he’s going to be a divisive guy would like to see if he and a 3 or 4 can bring back Kampman from GB. About the same age, both have declining sack numbers, Burgess a better bet to work in 3-4.

Too bad the Raiders can’t trade him to… the Raiders! – a team that’s willing to overpay for washed up/injury prone talent. Too bad.

Id like to see the Panthers trade to Peppers to the raiders for him. They both are under one year deals…..

    come on pats!!!!!!!!!

I can’t believe they wanted a 3rd and a 4th round pick for a guy who had 3.5 sacks last season. Al Davis has really lost it, when is someone in that organization going to put “something” in his afternoon tea?
I feel for ya Raiders fans, I feel for ya!

I think give it a week or so and if Ben Watson isn’t showing he’s better than the rest of the TEs (Chris Baker, Alex Smith, Dave Thomas) in New England they trade straight up. Oakland gets a really fast TE and New England gets an OLB. Both are in the final year of their contracts.

Oakland doesn’t need a TE, so your theory is beyond flawed, Insomniac.
Thank you, PantherPride, but we don’t need your sympathy. No matter how bad my Raiders are, they’ll always have three more things your team doesn’t.
    Back on topic…
Burgess is really screwing himself here, and nobody else. He’s being fined every day, and if the Raiders want to, they can let him ride out the entire season at home. He’ll lose 2 million dollars in doing so. That being said, why shouldn’t the Raiders try to trade him? Some of you Raider hating idiots don’t seem to realize who has the leverage in this situation. All you want to do is act like a bunch of little sheep bellowing the same old garbage you learned from biased morons who know nothing of the Raiders and how they do business. You bark out what you hear, because your too stupid to research things on your own.
I think Oakland should ask even more for Burgess, and if no team bites, let him rot, or carry his ass into camp. I’m tired of whiny prima donnas crying for what they don’t deserve in the NFL. The signed a contract, and these pricks should live up to them like a real man.

    @ Raiders757
“…..know nothing of the Raiders and how they do business….”
    —-
And you do??? I don’t think any team in CALIFORNIA knows what they’re doing; including the Chargers…
The Raiders CONTINUOUSLY make bad deals and, cough, cough, bad draft picks. So why would any fan have any other concept as to how poorly the team in operated? I know why Raider fans wear costumes and paint their faces beyond recognition. Hell, I would too if I were forced to go watch Oakland’s pathetic football.
Burgess if your best player. May want to keep ‘em.

“Burgess if your best player. May want to keep ‘em.”
Hello, earth to gnopo5, you display your ignorance of making comments like that. Have you not heard of a guy that plays DB and his first name starts with Nn ?
Burgess has been a whiner for the last 3 years and has “mysterious” injuries. He is far from our “best” player.

  12. as big as a hat says: Aug 3, 2009 8:29 PM

gnopo5 is a dumbass. Burgess isn’t even their best defensive lineman, and they have one of the weakest in the league. Insomniac is also clueless. Oakland has one of the best young receiving TEs in the league, and they just drafted a blocker. As for PantherPride74, shut up. You had to franchise your best player while Crazy Al signed his to a 3-year franchise contract. Next year Carolina will again burn their tag on Peppers, but Al will be free to enslave somebody else. Pity yourself, loser.

Burgess is going nowhere. Media just loves to stir the pot. Fact is burgess will be healthy this year, and will play his butt off to get paid as a free agent next year. If he has a great year, the Raiders will franchise him.
