Packers don't rule out signing Vick

Asked about Michael Vick at a press conference Tuesday, Packers G.M. Ted Thompson took the Bill Belichick approach: He said what he says about every free agent.

"Uh, what is the answer that we give to questions like this? We're always looking to improve our team and we look at all options at all times," Thompson said, after a reported sigh.

"I wouldn't care to speculate in terms of the odds or anything like that."

Thompson went on to say "we look at everything," which may anger some shareholders in Green Bay.

But likely reason for his vague answer is that Thompson is just trying to be consistent, like Belichick was.  Every team must consider all available players, if only briefly.

Thompson says Vick doesn't warrant any special process because of his past.

"The routine we go through is the same. It doesn't mean anymore that we're more likely or less likely to do it. It's a routine that we go through. It's automatic," Thompson said.

Vick apparently doesn't warrant a special press conference denial either, even if any signing is a longshot.

The comments may get played up because of Green Bay's questionable quarterback situation after Aaron Rodgers.  They could potentially be looking for a veteran upgrade at their backup spot.

Thompson could also be keeping his options open just in case emergency strikes, like if Rodgers was injured.

Still, it's not like the Packers or any other NFL team are known to have shown serious interest in Vick.

Vick has been available for more than a week and hasn't been offered a contract or taken a workout.  That speaks louder than any non-answer at a press conference.

There really is only one team in the league without an semblence of a capable QB and that is the L.A. Vikings. Not sure why they wouldn't make a run at him, then again, I'm not sure why they do anything they do. Then again, their fans do wear purple and don Heidi braids...

Man, I really wish Thompson would have flat out stated he had NO interest in Vick. We went through enough BS last season, we really don't need that distraction added to our locker room.

That and Vick's a total shit head. I'd rather we lose every game this season than sign Mike Vick.

if they are looking for a veteran Qb maybe they should sign jeff george after all his QB rating is 5 points better than vick, and even though he is an ass his arm is much better

You only WISH that your non Brett Favre existence franchise was even close to a put together club as the MINNESOTA Vikings. I GUARANTEE that the Vikes will take the series against the Green Bay Fudgepackers this year. WRITE THAT DOWN!

It's going to be hilarious when Vick does sign with an NFL team. Why does this site have such a hard on to see him fail when it's clearly inevitable?

I also like that Rosenthal has adapted the Florio WVU hatred for Vick, "That speaks louder than any non-answer." You guys haven't said squat about HOFer Derrick Brooks being unsigned or Kevin Carter. With all three it's a matter of where and when, not if.

Keep hating. I love how riled up Vick makes everyone. This is all going to be too fun to watch.

Now all they need is an offensive line. Maybe they should just pick up a couple of sows from the county fair. TT is the best!

    Isn't Dewey a Bears fan?

Anyway, I pray to God they don't sign Vick. He can't pass to save his life. Now if he were willing to play a slash-role... I still wouldn't want him. Too much baggage.

Personally, I don't think Vick signs a deal with any NFL team unless there's at least an opportunity for him to compete for the starting job. Why take a backup role in the NFL if he could make a couple million and highlight his "skills" as a starting QB in the UFL for one season? He'd probably dominate that league, exorcise his PR demons at the expense of an inferior league, then try getting a job mid-season or next season with an NFL team.

  23. JimmySmith says: August 4, 2009 2:52 PM

No worries, if TT is anything, he is consistent in his approach. He gave the PC answer but his history suggests it is the longest of odds in signing Vick. #1, he rarely signs older players, #2 he reserves big contracts for his own draft choices, #3, he doesn't want to write off the draft choice he already invest in Brohm after only one year and most importantly #4, he prefers players that he calls, "Packer people" good locker room character guys and if Vick has shown himself to be anything, its hardly that.

That said, Vick would fit in better with the Vikings, he could hang out with McKinnie and Harvin, peas in a pod, they don't have a real qB on the roster, the fans don't even know what a real QB looks like, and the head coach is a real developer of the QB position, if you don't believe me, just ask him.

I hate to admit it, but Jimmy's rants make me chuckle.....occasionally.

It would be nice, though, if Vick did sign with the Pack. It would trump any past discretions of the Vikings. Just think - Bob Nelson brings up the "Love Boat," and all we would have to say is "Two words - Michael Vick."

I smell a smokescreen by Thompson. He knows the queens have quarterback envy when it comes to the Packers, and purposely left the door open to signing Vick, knowing there's a chance the queens might panic and swoop in with their own offer.

There's now way this will EVER happen.

If Rodgers goes down with a season-ending injury in Week 1, I would rather see Flynn or Brohm stink it and lose every game of the season than see Mike Vick suit up for the green and gold.

As much as I love my Packers, I would stop watching if they signed him.

  31. Darth Ringo says: August 4, 2009 3:16 PM

  32. Hauschild says: August 4, 2009 3:21 PM

For the umpteenth time - Minnesota runs the WCO - Vick is not intelligent enough to master it. How many times do we need to continue to cover the same ground?

And, Ted Thompson would NEVER sign Vick because Vick is a very low character individual, which TT steers far clear of.

  33. BuckyBadger says: August 4, 2009 3:23 PM

This will never happen in Green Bay. I am a Packer fan and lived in Wisconsin for the early part of my life and unless something has changed there they would never embrace a move like this. Thompson is not the most popular person there right now anyways..

I have a hard time seeing a lot people in Green Bay embracing a black QB let alone one with a criminal record. The racism up there is still very thick.

  34. cheezheadz says: August 4, 2009 3:31 PM

Damn guys, this happens every summer for you Queens' fans. Here, let me go over this one more time. Your team, (who will move in the next five years, guaranteed...sorry, but it's true) like every other offseason, signs a couple guys here and there, you have time to forget the last 48 seasons, and walla, we're right back in the same spot. If they gave out paper certificates for September Champions, the Viqueens would have the market cornered.

Anyway, I'll let you blokes get back to your sissy fit. I'll tell you what. I'm going to do you guys a favor, and build you a nice case to hold all of those Lombardi Trophies...
Ok, I'm back. Whew, that didn't take long. BTW, is it a problem for you guys that your team is trying and failing to win a trophy named after another Green Bay Packer?

If Mason Crosby makes two FGs at the end of regulation at the HHH and at Soldier ('s) Field the Pack go 6-0 in the North and if the ref's don't give MIN the fluke Pass Interference call at the end of the DET game, well, I guess we wouldn't have gotten to see history. You put up 12 points on the Lions great job. You da man.

You may have been confused at times because of the whole "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine that sometimes applies.

Still lost? It's named after the most iconic sports figure of all time.

Still can't figure it out?? FINE! It's the Lombardi trophy, you get one for winning the super bowl..... you know....the last game played every season....the one game the Vikings have NEVER won... It's the reason teams compete every year.... to win it.

Wow, win one NFC north title and the Vikings fans think they own the world.....

I have to say that as a Packer fan, I'm not really impressed with an NFC North victory. The Packers have been winning those things for years. The only thing that really counts and the only thing that REALLY gives you any bragging rights is the Lombardi trophy. Something neither team has seen in some time now. So in reality 6-10 essentially equals 10-7 or whatever you finished last year - they were both losers in the end.

You cannot compare last year to this year. Too much has changed in the division and arguably the only team to not improve was the Vikings.

The Packers have a new defense - with Raji and Cullen Jenkins now back from injury. They have competent defensive coaches - last year the defense was so vanilla that the opposing offense oftentimes called out what the d was running before the play - the Packer players even admitted to it. Their defense cannot go anywhere but up.

The Bears have a new quarterback and thus should have a more potent offense.

The lions cannot get any worse.

How did the Vikings do? they added Harvin (high-risk, but high reward guy) and Rosenfelds (basically not much of an improvement over Jackson). But they lost Birk, they lost Sharper and the Williams wall will be suspended 4 games. If Harvin doesn't turn out to be a big playmaker, I cannot see how your team improves from last year.

  52. lebowski says: August 4, 2009 5:12 PM

There are a lot of people who think Culpepper was run out of town, and now Jackson receives more criticism than he deserves, because Minnesota can't handle having a black quarterback either.

It is spelled "wear", not "where"....morons. You Vikings fans are as laughable as that Hefty Bag Dome stinkhole that you play in. Your team will be in LA before you ever get an NFL stadium. The closest team available to cheer for when that happens is spelled GREEN BAY PACKERS!

If Vick wants to get his life back on track, Green Bay is exactly where he should go. Recall that McCarthy turned Favre back into his mid-90s MVP form and built a legitimate QB out of a Tedford QB. In addition to that, he won't be under *as much* scrutiny in a tiny town. He would have a 0% chance of playing outside of the preseason, but maybe he'd make good trade bait.

I don't think they should bother getting him, though.

    First of all
alot of you dont obviously know about football
signing vick would be a great idea
by the way,who is rodgers backup QB?
    Enough said
plus, you can use him in the slot,or bring him in on occasion to change up the pace at QB
And for all you making cracks about wisconsin, loving the killing of animals, well hunting has nothing to do,with what vick did
    he deserves a second chance
and with him,we will win the nfc north division
    vikings,bears,lions,wont know what hit them
    go packkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
