Though it remains to be seen whether the Kansas City Chiefs perform any better this season, they’ll give it a try with 66.666666–hell, it goes on forever so lets just round up–7 of the Week Two and beyond depth chart of the 2008 Patriots.
The Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel in February, and now they’ve claimed Matt Gutierrez on waivers, according to Adam Caplan of Scout.com.
Gutierrez had been cut prior to the 2008 season by the Pats, but he returned after Tom Brady landed on injured reserve following a Week One ACL tear.
Andrew Walter was cut recently by the Raiders, and he was signed by the Patriots, which triggered the release of Gutierrez. Per Caplan the Jets also put in a claim for Gutierrez; surprisingly, the Broncos (coached by former Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) didn’t.
The Chiefs cut quarterback Ingle Martin to create a spot for Guttierez.
And to make this thing come full circle, here’s hoping that the Raiders make a waiver claim on Martin.
Guttierrez was cut by the Raiders….hmmmmmmm…I think maybe not.
And to make this thing come full circle, here’s hoping that the Raiders make a waiver claim on Martin.
They won’t….his 40 time was too slow
Good! Just what the Chiefs need… another no talent, overrated ex-Pat.
IMO ….. Tom Brady is the reason for the Patriot’s decade of dominance.
It is not Belichick or Pioli or Josh McDaniels and for sure not Cassel or Guiterez…and not Charlie Weiss or Romeo Crennel or whatever…just look what all have done after they left the Pats.
Do not expect any success greater than Weiss or Crennel from Pioli or McDaniels.
Jesus, just look at Belichick’s record when Tom Brady IS NOT his starting QB. It is barely average at best but I will say below average. He could not make an in game coaching adjustment to save his freakin’ life the first game the Dolphins ran the Wildcat. Where was his “massive personal football library” then?
All of the above plus Randy Moss did not have the talent or coaching to even make the playoffs last year without Brady despite coming within a whisker of a Super Bowl win of being unanimously considered as the BEST TEAM EVER IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE NFL and playing in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL against one of the weakest schedules in the NFL.
For the last time… the Patriots live and die with Brady. Everyone else, especially media – and to some extent self – proclaimed genius Belichick are just along for the ride.
Aaaaaah, and the Jets miss out on the Pats playbook!
Don’t be a Fag Florio…admit that you stated that Gutierrez was cut by the Raiders and you fixed the post.
belicheat makes in game adjustments all the damn time. for some reason they didnt in the wildcat game.
but there may have been a method to the madness.
let the fins play out all their tricks. it didnt work the next time around. at all.
the score was 38-13 in the wildcat game. maybe cassel’s inexperience had something to do with it.
also note that the fins have periodically shut the pats down over the years. they jumped their snap a lot a few years ago. and beat NE 21-0. with brady in the lineup. i believe, at NE.
belecheat doesnt do in-game adjustments… oh bullshit. u have him confused with dungy, ray rhodes, lovie smith…
@ Citizen Strange,
11-5 with a quarterback who never started a college or pro game up to that point, is below average?
Get your head checked.
as a chiefs [i feel i MUST preface] fan, this is odd. is croyle that bad? ingle martin is challenging him and now gutt? a 3rd round pick to not even 3rd stringer? or maybe cassell and gutt are really good friends…….
@patspsycho:
He was referring to Belicheat’s entire coaching resume. I’m guessing you didn’t know he was the coach of the Browns in the mid-90′s for a few years. But I would expect that from a typical Pats fan, as football didn’t exist to you before 2000.
YOU need your head examinated. My guess is all they’ll find is a black hole.
Citizen Strange,
Keep drinkin’ that CheaterAde FOOL & those of us that know better will keep reminding you that the Cheating IS paramount to their TAINTED success, 10-5 with a high school QB? C’mon dude!
@rockotica Croyle’s problem is his injury history, you just can’t rely on him to stay healthy. Gutierrez is a Pioli draft pick so its not surprising at all that Pioli wanted to bring him in.
Math jokes. A new low.
@patpsycho

Almost any backup QB in the NFL could go 11-5 with the roster that New England has. When he goes to KC and is heaving the ball to Dwayne Bowe and…umm..oh wait, that’s it…come talk to me and tell me that he is as good as Belichick’s system made him look. KC overpaid and Tyler Thigpen will be licking his chops when Cassel’s QB rating is hovering around 75 at mid-season.
rockotica:
I’m also a Chiefs fan, and I do find this a little bizarre, but only in light of several other pickups the Chiefs have made this offseason. It’s clear that Pioli is trying to bring in “his” guys.
That being said, Brodie Croyle is simply too fragile to be an NFL quarterback. Don’t get me wrong — I’m a Bama fan as well and I love Brodie. I think he has all the necessary tools an NFL quarterback needs, but even in college he was injury prone.
I barely even know what Ingle Martin looks like. Apparently the coaching staff isn’t seeing much from him.
Picking up Gutierrez makes sense because it is a player Pioli knows and is comfortable with. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if Croyle is cut before the preseason.
If Belichick wasn’t a great coach players wouldn’t respect him so much and perform for him like they do. Just look at the destractions he has had to keep out of his locker room. Talent alone doesn’t do it either. There are so many teams with tons of talent that have gone no where. It’s more than Xs and Os. He keeps it running like a well oiled machine.

You mean like your Patsy organization for the first 40 yrs.? That is until BeliCHEAT showed up with his cheat sheet!
@ bbq – everything u say is solid; its just that gutt wasn’t that good in NE. i know he’s a NE/Pioli guy, but he’s gotta show talent!!
and p.s.-on kcstar’s vlog adam teicher aka the world’s most boring human said that croyle is actually looking better than thigpen and is the front runner for the # 2. just throwing it out there.

This has to win the award for most awkward opening statement for a PFT article this year….
ALERT ALERT just read Ingle Martin has been cut so now this makes more sense. I know every1 in PFT Planet was on pins and needles regarding Kc’s 3rd/4th QB situation.

Yeah, those first 40 year Patriots had soooo much talent. And it was so easy for a team to make it before free agency I can’t see why. LOL
@SixBurghDude-
I really don’t understand how you can claim STILL that cheating is paramount to the Pats success. After they were made to ‘stop cheating’ in September of 2007, they proceeded to rampage all over EVERYONE in the league, including Shittsburgh with the rapist at the helm. How can you claim it knowing that? I really don’t get it. It doesn’t work…
rusH1023,
You don’t come across as mentally challenged, just obscurred a bit from drinking the CheaterAde, so hopefully you can follow along;
The answer is rather simple. The worst PR nightmare that the “cash cow” that is the NFL could possibly face, is one that raises questions about the integrity of the product on the field.
Think about the revenue lost if fans & more importantly gamblers, were unsure about whether there were a team or teams having a decidedly unfair advantage. It is for these reasons that Goodell destroyed the evidence that tied your cheats to much more than was let out & it is also for this reason that Belicheat knows that if he’s caught again, the NFL cannot afford to take the risk of addressing it in a public forum. Afterall, you know better than us, that he’s a genius. So surely, if I can figure it out, he can as well!
Oh & did I mention?
ONCE A CHEAT…ALWAYS A CHEAT!!!
Well then, I gueess for the Steelers it’s: ONCE A BUNCH OF STERIOD HEAD CHEATERS… ALWAY A BUNCH OF STERIOD HEAD CHEATERS.
@ Flyin’E -
Surely you’re not so full of the CheaterAde that you’re gonna try to compare a rightful Dynasty that supposedly (never proven & not illegal, thus never punished) used steroids at a time when not only were they not a banned substance, but also when all other teams were doing it as well, ever heard Lyle Alzado’s story?
Do you really think that in a game as brutal as the NFL, all opposing players in the 70′s were gonna concede that advantage to the Steeler’s alone, when their doing the same was not deemed as circumventing the rules of the time???
How convenient of you however, to totally ignore the established fact, that your boy Rodney Harrison was on the receiving end of HGH shipments, as late as the week of the Super Bowl & the only thing his retiring from the game does is assure that your other thug Wilfork can now be voted the NFL’s dirtiest player annually.
Face it Masshole, your organization didn’t even exist prior to the current millenium & their recent success will always be viewed as TAINTED as they have chosen to operate as an arrogant, incorrigible band of malcontents!
Now since you & yours choose to support & defend their deplorable actions for the purpose of self-satisfaction, you have the unenviable task of swallowing the tainted load that goes with it!!!
