More leverage for Roddy White

The Falcons already are missing receiver Roddy White, who’s holding out in lieu of honoring the final year of his contract.

They’ll now be missing receiver Harry Douglas, a third-round pick in 2008 who won’t be playing at all in 2009.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN Future, Douglas suffered a torn ACL during practice on Wednesday.  The injury occurred while Douglas was performing a one-on-one drill.

In the absence of White, Douglas had been elevated to No. 2 receiver, with Michael Jenkins taking White’s spot at the top wideout position.

Appearing in every game of his first regular season but starting none, Douglas caught 23 passes for 320 yards and a touchdown.  He also carried the ball 12 times for 69 yards and another score.

His biggest game came on November 23 in a 45-28 win over the Panthers; Douglas caught four passes for 92 yards (including a season-long of 69), and he scored on a seven-yard run.

Douglas also returned 19 punts for an 11.9-yard average, including a 61-yarder.  He returned for kickoffs, averaging 11.5 yards per attempt.

Douglas started the Falcons’ wild-card playoff loss to the Cardinals, but he caught only one pass for no gain.

It remains to be seen whether the Douglas injury prompts the Falcons to cave in to White’s demands, or whether they’ll look elsewhere for assistance.

Wow, Tony G’s fantasy value just rose again!!
What sucks is that Harry was headed for a breakout year…
I trust Dimitroff’s decisions and if he decides against signing Roddy, then he’ll have something else up his sleeve.

If anything, I think this will prompt Roddy to accept the offer on the table! He was just afraid with addition of Gonzalez and Harry Douglas bound for a GREAT year (well, he WAS), that he wasn’t going to have NEARLY the production he had last season and he would never get the opportunity to make big money again!
    Everything happens for a reason…PIHSNOIPMAHC!!!

Marvin Harrison is 36 years old.
Reggie Williams… isn’t he in prison? Didn’t they find cocaine on his person this year?
Matt Jones… possibility, but a big step down from Roddy White talent-wise.
Joe Jurevicius… never a #1 wideout. Plus, he’s in Broadcast Boot Camp, preparing to enter into a booth.
    Dane Looker… Who???
Ashley Lelie… was a Falcon. Dimitroff didn’t give him the time of day after his performance. Peace-out!
Ike Hilliard… not complimentary piece, but not a #1. Ask the Bucs about that.
See, Roddy White is the Falcons’ #1 go-to receiver. He’s a burner that can catch in clutch situations. He has bailed out Matt Ryan on plenty of errant throws, and he arose as a threat- thus relieving the running game.
The Falcons need him desperately. This team needs his big-play ability. This is a tough situation. Harry Douglas is a good player, but he’s not a #1. But then, even he went down.
Back the truck up, because they need to pay White some money.

if motivated, jones does fine. of course, being forced to switch positions doesnt help one get motivated!
jones was the jags offense last year.

With all the ACLs popping, it’s hard to blame him for holding out.

    @ tian
Rundown was………………………. unnecessary. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Roddy White is under contract for this season, but chose on his own or with the encouragement of his agent to not show up for what will now be the 6th day. The daily monetary fine per day for his absence is nearly $16,000. Since he is not here, adjustments need to be made, and realistically young guys on the roster like Chandler Williams, Eric Weems, Aaron Kelly, Troy Bergeron, et al. shouldn’t be counted on once the regular season starts. A veteran should be brought in, warts and all, in case of another injury.
Work on an extension for Roddy White has been in the works for some time, but whether the monetary terms have been generous, modest, or “lowballin’”, doesn’t matter.Roddy should still be here. He’d still be welcome back with open arms. Journey song later.
As atlantafalCANS would say: IN DIMITROFF WE TRUST!

Hey SaintsBucsPanthersSUKK…I was expecting another Led Zepplin rendition. Or do you only spend hours on end at 3am coming up with songs/poems about other teams?

Falcons working out 3 free agents today…per NFL.com.
Character issues (which it is clear TD is trying to stear clear of) is my biggest concern with Matt Jones. What about Jerry Porter? Marty Booker? Joe Jurevicius? I guess we’ll see…I hope Bergeron has a break out year!!! Maybe Weems?!

You are welcome, sir! GO FALCONS!

The songs/movie lines happen instantaneously through inspiration, or via some triggering mechanism like a written word, group of words, or a particular situation within the text.
Haven’t had a poem in months, but will whip one up some weekend just for you, BlacknBlue, and also screaming sheep, you incorrigible Panthers fans. GO FALCONS!
