Niners receiver Brandon Jones out eight weeks

On Friday morning a 49ers spokesman said that free agent addition Brandon Jones would miss "a couple of weeks."  That didn't necessarily seem PFT post-worthy.

On Friday afternoon, 49ers head coach Mike Singletary contradicted the spokesman

"Oh, it's going to be longer than a couple of weeks. It's going to be more like eight weeks," Singletary said.

Jones has a fracture in his shoulder.  Now that's post-worthy!  (So is the fact an NFL coach went out of his way to be transparent.)

Jones isn't a big name, but he received relatively big money -- $5.4 million guaranteed -- to jump from the Titans to the 49ers this offseason.

He was one of the consistent standouts of camp thus far, and looked like the heavy favorite to fill the team's slot receiver duties behind Josh Morgan and Isaac Bruce, at least until Michael Crabtree returned.

Singletary's eight week timetable would knock Jones out for the first 3-4 games of the season.

While this would appear to make signing Crabtree more pressing, the 49ers have better depth at receiver than they have in a long time.  Arnaz Battle and Jason Hill have both produced on Sundays and can fill in.

The shoulder fracture was a bad break for Jones, but it doesn't look especially meaningful for Crabtree.

they need to trade crabtree to cardinals for Boldin and a 2nd rounder, reup boldin and still be ahead of the game moneywise, plus you get a receiver who you know can play. F crabtree, whiny little b.

How come my boy, Raheem, has to take all this flack for being in over his head, when Mike Singletary clearly, spouts his mouth off at the media and at his players, caring little about anyone's perceptions of him or the franchise? Face it, the tough guy image works on the media. Nobody, wants to question this guy after continues meltdowns and blow ups. The Bucs might end up with the worst record, between these two teams, but I guarantee the Bucs will be a better team than the 9ers...no offense Frisco Fans

The Niners are only going to throw about 10 times a game anyway. This isn't a big deal

I don't recall Jones ever playing a full season. He's always been full of potential but injured.

Ah- the Florio style of reporting begins to take hold with Greg. Rather than writing that the coach updated the earlier statement of the team spokesman, Greg writes "...49ers head coach Mike Singletary contradicted the spokesman. "

Given that the coaches statements take place after those of the spokesman, and he is more in a position of power, there was not contradiction. More proof that PFT will morph anyone into more agressive and more "colorful" writer.

Well considering that Jones was gonna actually be our 3rd WR its not that bad. We still have Jason Hill who played really well last year. Arnaz Battle is back from being hurt and Ziegler who is like the little engine who could he catches everything. Pus whenever Crabtree gets his @$$ in camp he was gonna take over the slot anyways so...
