Mike Vick's first "interview"

The specific venue of quarterback Mike Vick’s first post-prison interview has been the subject of much debate.

Some, like our friend Rich Eisen of NFL Network, thought that Vick’s first sit-down should occur while sitting down on the couch of Oprah.  (What could go wrong there?)

Others, like us, thought that Vick should submit to something a little more hard hitting, which would give him a chance to acknowledge the monstrous nature of his crimes — and which might even make him appear to be sympathetic (e.g., Jim Gray and Pete Rose).

Instead, America’s first chance to both see and hear a supposedly transformed Mike Vick comes courtesy of YouTube, and the rappers Young Jeezy and Young Floss.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports posted a link to the video on his Twitter page.

[UPDATE:  Though some have suggested that the video predates Vick's prison term, it was posted on August 7, 2009 -- the same day that Young Jeezy and the rest of the "America's Most Wanted" tour appeared in Bristow, Virginia.]

Even though Vick’s not saying or doing anything inappropriate (that said, some might be a bit alarmed by his use of the “n” word), we doubt that the video will persuade many people that Vick is all that different than he was before his lifestyle of gambling and dogfighting and killing dogs deemed unfit to fight was exposed.

Moreover, and while there’s no evidence from the video to suggest Vick was doing anything to violate the terms of his probation or conditional reinstatement, it doesn’t reflect the behavior of a guy who has taken completely to heart the warning for Commissioner Roger Goodell that “your margin for error is extremely limited” and that he should “dedicate [himself] to rebuilding [his] life and [his] career.”

Maybe it should be with Jessie Jackson and they can wax on how it is race that is keeping him unemployed instead of being the convicted ex-con, scum-of-the-earth no talent that he is.

And the problem with this is????? Maybe when he sits down with 60 Minutes, you can look into his eyes and “see” the remorse you’re looking for, then again, unless he screams TOBY! I doubt it’ll be believed.

I’m done with this guy…I was done with him after he INTENTIONALLY SLAMMED DOGS TO THE GROUND UNTIL THEY DIED AND DROWNED THEM. How and why can anyone still defend this thug???????? What will it take???????
There are a lot of idiots out there and William Rhoden is the biggest racist idiot of all time. The guy can’t speak, yet he’s on the Sports Reporters. Listen to him,….good thing he’s a writer.
I’m sick of race cards and all that b.s. Bottom line is Vick is a thug and hasn’t changed at all..

  7. TheDPR says: Aug 9, 2009 8:30 AM

People with brains who just got out of prison don’t go “to a club with some friends,” misterj. They work hard to establish a clean image.
Look at the public view of Vick compared to Stallworth. The damage to society was arguably much greater from Stallworth’s crime than Vick’s. So why isn’t Stallworth the hated figure that Vick is? Because Stallworth manned up instantly and has remained classy and contrite the entire time. Vick never manned up and only worked out a plea when it was clear that a trial would make things even worse for him. For him. It’s always about himself where Vick is concerned. Mike Vick and his instant gratification. He’s a punk and a thug and he still doesn’t “get it.”

  8. Azinine says: Aug 9, 2009 8:34 AM

I don’t think anyone needs a system to destroy Michael Prick, he seems to be doing a good job of it himself. Funny how he has Jesse Jackson saying its a race thing yet the moron is on film dropping the N bomb left and right. Once a ghetto thug always a ghetto thug

That was possibly the stupidest video I’ve ever seen, and I’ve spent a substantial amount of free time perusing Youtube vids.
As far as Vick is concerned, I can see your point, Florio, about the lack of distance between the man he was and the man he apparently still is. He may also want to limit his exposure on anything with the word “THUG” in it’s name. I would say, overall, bad choice…but not the worst decision he could have made. Is he on any kind of probation? It seems to be pretty common practice that a jail sentence is followed by some sort of probation, and I’d imagine that entering an establishment that serves alcohol is most likely prohibited, let alone video evidence of alcohol being served to your party.

Yeah, you don’t get it, either.
It doesn’t matter whether Vick actually is or is not doing anything wrong in the clip. Appearances, however, DO matter.
Think about the demographic of the public that cares a lot about animal rights. How do you think Vick appears in this clip?
To some people, it might appear that Vick just went to a club with some friends. To most people, I think, it appears Vick is still a member of the same bullshit thug culture that lead to his killing and fighting dogs in the first place.
If he had half a brain, he would put a lot of distance between himself and that culture, at least until he had the opportunity to rebuild his career and his reputation.

    Why ?
Maybe it’s the brutality of his acts, maybe it’s due to the fact he lied his a$$ off insisting that he did nothing wrong. Maybe it’s because he hasn’t shown any remorse.
I don’t see how not wanting him to participate in the NFL is destroying him ?

  16. Dawn says: Aug 9, 2009 8:53 AM

and jester jackson will be on guard out front to make sure nobody but nwords use the nword. got to have them priorities.

  19. JimmySmith says: Aug 9, 2009 9:13 AM

Vick has been a punk and a thug his whole life. His college career consisted of the red carpet treatment from beginning to end just to get him on the football field for 4 years. The Falcons empowered him and his thug lifestyle justifiying it all the way based on the dollars they spent on his over inflated contract.
So he eventually has to pay the consequences for his actions and now everybody expects him to change overnight? He is still a thug and a punk, chances are, that’s all he will ever be. Any right thinking GM wouldn’t want this piece of shit anywhere near their locker room. Let him hang out in the night clubs with these fine upstanding citizens. Let’s see how far that gets him.

  20. vanceharden says: Aug 9, 2009 9:21 AM

But I was at the concert in Bristow, Virginia (got dragged to a rap concert by my friends bleh!) and I can tell you with 100 percent honesty that Young Jeezy did not show up for the concert although he was listed as one of the artists to peform. So either this video is not from august 7th or jeezy never made it out to the concert because he was too busy with vick.

    Yeah! Woohoo! ALLLLLRIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely we should never take anyone to task fo their confessed felony convictions!
Mick Vick is a certifiable genius for filming this spot, which is clearly evident through the fact that he filmed this spot!
Because who better than Young Jeezy and Young Floss to representyou and your formerly multi-hundred-milion dollar enterprise!
I’ll leave it to the police captain from “Ruthless People” for the relevant quote:
“This might be the stupidest man on the face of the Earth.”
His handlers should make him wear a helmet 245-7-365!
I’ll leave it to Mr. Shoop from “Summer School” for the relevant quote:
“You lose one more brain cell and you’re a talking monkey.”
This may be the most misguided, uninformed fool who has ever strapped on the pads.
Mr. Vick should frankly be reincarcerated due to the inability of himself or his attorneys to effectively defend himself or his actions against the mountain of physical evidence that continues to incriminate him in his vicious and wanton murder of dogs.
It’s the only way to save him from himself.

Just because he’s fresh out of jail does that mean he has to become Mr. Button Up Shirt Church Dude? Being a middle class white dude in his 30’s, I can’t say I relate to whatever was going on in that video (in fact I could not even understand what they were saying), but if that’s what he wants to do – who gives a crap??? I didn’t see him around any dogs or dog fighting. Get over how he used to destroy the Mountaineers every year and let’s move on. Let us know when he signs with someone (if ever).

He isn’t doing anything illegal here, and although he is going to be in the spotlight 24/7 now, the guy should still be allowed to live his life.
If anyone thinks vick is going to completely change the culture of his life and only be shown with monks and alter boys than they are an idiot. He won’t, and he shouldn’t have to as long as he can keep clean. And if he can’t? Then bust his ass.

  44. dagodfather says: Aug 9, 2009 11:47 AM

    Couple of things…
1 – Vick served his time. He is not out on probation. He’s done with the legal system.
2 – The NFL (and NBA, for that matter) are littered with thugs and a$$holes. What makes him so different? He got caught? See point 1.
3 – How is what Vick did any more heinous then what Ray Lewis did or had done? Yet, this guy can move on with his life and Vick can not? Let’s not be hypocrites here.
4 – Since when are pit bulls classified as “non-violent animals”? If they were non-violent, they would not be used in dog fighting, would they?
I realize all of this sounds like I am pro-Vick here. I am not. I do not think this man should ever be allowed to step on a football field again. To quote Goodell; “Playing in the NFL is not a right. It’s a privledge.” I couldn’t agree more.
However, I do believe it is the right of each individual owner of an NFL team to allow or not allow Vick’s continued participation on their individual teams. If someone allows him to play, then so be it.
Lastly, Jesse Jackson and William Rhoden need to learn that just because something goes against what a black man wants, does not make it a racial issue. This is a humanity issue, not a racial one. If they can not see that, then shame on them.

  45. Nathan says: Aug 9, 2009 11:51 AM

    1. Vick is not done with the Legal System. His felony and jail time will be on his record forever. He’s already booked in the system any further screw ups and he’s toast.
And as an owner of 2 pit bulls,( who by the way are the most loving and friendly dogs I have ever had) they are not born violent animals. They are a product of how they are raised! I also own a wolf hybrid which can be a very vicious dog. He is the most gentle soul and would not harm a fly!.
And to the numb nuts that pointed out 3 incidents involving 3 different white players. I KNOW you dont want to go down the comparison road!! And calling out Tom Brady because he has 2 children wth different ladies?? Dare I say Shawn Kemps name?? What’s he got like 15 kids with like 12 women. Or hell just go into any housing project. Never mind that the person in question admitted to strangling his dogs to death.
Never mind that the person in question admitted to drowning his dogs to death.
All of these actions are felonies under US law.
Mike Vick has been ajudicated guilty on all counts.
How many of you out there could be convicted of felony charges and keep your job, regardless of race or gender?
Most of you couldn’t even pass a fvcking drug test regardless of race or gender.
Yet these conditions would disqualify you from any sort of reasonable employment, let alone a $multi-million NFL contract.

Or place bets on which dog could kill the other dog faster. Or kill dogs that didn’t perform to expectations by strangling them to death with their bare hands or drowning them or electrocuting them.

4 – Since when are pit bulls classified as “non-violent animals”? If they were non-violent, they would not be used in dog fighting, would they?
Every breed has non-violent animals – thats a complete sterotype of an animal. Yes some are violent (as are some Cocker Spaniels), some are trained to be violent, some are non-violent. Not every black is a thug, not every white is racist, not every pit bill is violent.
Why is there no mention in any post that defends Vick & calls others racist the way Mike Vick took those non-fighting animals & intentionally, for kicks, for his personal & sadistic enjoyment, and with his own hands, electrocuted them & repeatedly slammed them to the ground & drowned them. All the “you haters” posts conveniently ignore the sickest and most sub-human behavior of Mike Vick? Because they know there is no defense for it, so play the “unity” & “stick together” thing and ignore the real facts.

The problem that I have with the majority of the people who continue to bash Mike Vick about the decisions he makes in his personal life is the fact that while you present yourself as the “moral police” you completely ignore the fact that he isn’t breaking any laws by going out with friends. Whether it be to a Strip Club, Bar, Concert or the Bunny Ranch for that matter none of this is illegal. I wonder if your life (not that anyone cares) was put under the microscope, could you withstand the same amount of scrutiny and sifting through that these big name celebrities have to endure??? Imagine if you couldn’t have a beer with some friends without the entire world expressing their opinion about it. Like it or not he fufilled his obligation and has no need to kiss anyone’s A-$$ including Roger TOOLdell. Secondly, playing in the NFL is NOT a priviledge it’s a business and if someone wants to pay for Vick’s services then so be it. He possesses a very unique skill set and he WILL play in the NFL again. Don’t want to see it, then don’t buy a ticket or watch the game period….. And as far as all of you who call him a punk and a pu$$y I would personally hand you 5k cash to say it to his face in a room with no cameras and no snitches and watch him proceed to take your manhood. kan-eechy- wha B-I-T-c-h-e-s!

“YOU PEOPLE” and when I say “YOU PEOPLE” you know exactly who I’m referring to.
You people are so mad that a young black man can make all that money, command the air waves, and survive a bogus jail sentence and not be broken :)
You really need to get a life all you “couch potatoes” and stop spreading your racist and hatred ways.
You want to talk about thugs? Let’s talk about Ben Roethlingber, aka, rapist and thug.
Oh don’t forget about Tom “got so many babies” Brady.
Oh here is another one, Matt “snort snort” Jones.
Those are some classy white boys :)
    ——————————————————
That does a bogus charge of sexual assault or Brady’s kids or Jones killing his own NFL career have anything to do with Vick serial killing animals??
Better to make this a black/white issue than admit the facts. This wasn’t a one time mistake, he didn’t accidently kill one dog – he in the most hatred filled methods made non-violent creatures suffer WITH HIS OWN HANDS before dying, HE DID HIS OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER, for no other good reason other than HIS OWN ENTERAINMENT.
MICK VICK IS A SUB-HUMAN, VILE, VIOLENT, HEARTLESS SERIAL ANIMAL TORTURER & KILLER. Defend that with another “you people” speech…focus on the people fed up with Mike Vick, not on his cruelty. Much easier that way.

    thetruthhurts,
When I said “if you have a problem with this” I wasn’t referring to Vick’s actions that landed him in jail, I was referring to the actions in this specific video clip. Obviously the number of people (across all races) who partake in dogfighting is a tiny minority – let alone the executions of poorly performing dogs, etc.
I was referring to this “story” itself and the chorus of posts that resulted about “once a ghetto thug always a ghetto thug” about “butchering” the english language because he turned into a “bumbling incoherent neanderthal”, rap as a “blight” hanging out with “ghetto thugs”, “loser” rappers with “IQ’s under 70″.
Think about those words for a second.
I’m not even bringing him getting an employment opportunity into it which I feel is entirely at the discretion of the NFL owners. What I am saying is in this thread you have people expressing shock and disgust at the way he’s talking, who he’s hanging out with and the fact that he’s at a club. He got taped hanging out with his friends at a club fresh out of jail and everyone’s offended that he’s not on Good Morning America flaked by his agents talking in Dave Chappelle’s white voice or something.
But don’t listen to me, I’m a sick, sad, disgusting individual.

“still calling anyone that is black and lives in an urban culture a thug…bullshit.”
When one walks the walk and talks the talk, people call it how they see it. In other words, if your going to dress like a thug, talk like a thug, and hang out with people who emulate thugs, you pretty much are a thug.
True urban culture and thug culture are not one in the same.

This is one of the more absurd and ignorant claims I see getting spewed by the Vick fans. It’s laughable at best, and even more so, if this person actually believes this garbage.
You are right, Blue, that prison sentence was bogus, because most people who get charged with such things, serve more time than Vick did.
Once again, it’s pretty obvious that anyone who supports Vick, or any other criminals for that matter, obviously have low morals.

Whelp! Watched the video. It wasn’t his first “Interview.” It sounded like a bunch of his friends got together and was having some fun.
He was acting stupid, but nothing to hurt his chances of playing football. As long as he doesn’t break any laws, he can do what he pleases- in accordance to his probation, of course.
But I personally think he is going to play and start in the UFL. I do not believe that he’s going to accept a bad NFL deal. I believe that he will go out and start in the UFL, make his money, and re-enter the NFL next year with more leverage.

These are the guys he needs to be weary of “hangin'” with. He needs to put out videos hanging out with Oprah and shed a few tears with her. Or hang out with Jim Brown or the people at PETA. Typical for a guy who’ll never get it. Look at his face shear defiance trying to be hood tough. What a joke. Move on Vick. Eat 2 large slices of humble pie and do a few hail maries to get your soul in order. LOSER FOR LIFE!!!!

@Killachap, have you read some of the things that were written by some commenters? I’m not commenting on what Vick did or giving him a pass. What I’m saying is that there are some people who like use the actions of one guy to spew out racism. For example, empty13 wrote this:
    “empty13 says:

anything to shut down freedom of speech of those u disagree with, eh, celmo?
but it sure is a crying shame that vick hasnt gotten his way yet, isnt it… he may well have no choice but to face a new reality. especially since he repeatedly shows his true colors. i dont think anyone with a lick of common sense gives a damn if he is angry, as he is supposed to be contrite and reformed anyway, and unfortunately for him, he will not always get things the way he wants them.
the way it looks to me, he did stupid things in large part because he was black. and he grew up where he grew up.
people arent bagging on him just because he is black. vick is what one calls a target rich environment.
but he is asking for special treatment because he is black and a whole lot of america thinks we have to tie ourselves in knots just to give this jackass what he wants.”
But obviously, you are okay with that.

    kidekk:
Sir I do not at all see where that statement that you just quoted is racist. I think the person who wrote it chose his words wrong just like the way Obama did when he said the Cambridge police acted stupidly.
Look what are the facts? That Mike Vick is a black man who funded, ran and organzied an illegal interstate activity and he should be in jail still and for several more years. The fact is he is extremely lucky to even have a chance to play in the NFL. The fact is he is too damn stupid to shed himself of the crowd that got him into the situation he is in now. The fact is he is black.
The problem doesn’t reside in the color of his skin, but by the people he surrounds himself with. The problem is that people like Jesse Jackson and other idiots on this forum and several others say that the white man is holding him back. I would argue that the white man is giving him another shot by not putting his sorry carcus in jail for several years, the white man is giving him a second chance for allowing him to get paid millions for what many of us would do for free.
In a perfect world every man, woman and child would stop looking at people based on the color of their skin. I know I was raised that way and that is how I look at people. But its hard as a white man to sit back and not judge when black men and black people always say things like this are because of race. It is a cop out and almost defends a CRIMINALS actions. This is a national issue much deeper than football, but in my opinion until people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and other people who claim punishment for a black man is baised on his race, white people will always get pissed off because we dont have that cop out and there will always be some form of racism.
sorry for rambling there guys haha

  81. Kidekk says: Aug 9, 2009 8:33 PM

killachap, trying to give reasons why Mike Vick did what he did, but if you can’t find racism in this sentence: “the way it looks to me, he did stupid things in large part because he was black. and he grew up where he grew up,” I don’t know what to say. There’s no way he can rephrase that to make it sound “right” or analytical. And, I posted the whole thing so I wouldn’t take it out of context.

  82. Annuvin says: Aug 9, 2009 9:02 PM

Having just watched the video, I have only one observation:
You are judged by the company you keep, and the company Michael Vick is currently keeping look like a bunch of gang members. His “cuz” dressed up in red was a nice touch… Gee, I wonder what gang he belongs to?
And what exactly is “thug motivation” anyways? Getting up before noon so you can collect from all your ho’s before they blow all of “your” earnings on crack?
You can take a man out of the ghetto, but you’ll never take the ghetto out of the man.

Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio are some of the most beloved sports figures of all time in America, and you couldn’t keep them away from the bars. I do agree that Vick is on a very, very short leash (pun intended) and his behavior is going to be judged by more modern standards, but c’mon, he’s just at a bar hanging out with his friends. The man’s been in prison for years, what do you expect him to do. The guy paid the price for his crimes, he’ll soon pay the price for his lies. What more do you want from him? He was not that long ago one of the most talented players in the NFL. He is young enough to reclaim that. I don’t like what he did any more than anyone else, I have dogs of my own and I can’t imagine anyone treating them that way, but I would still support my favorite team, the Chiefs, signing him to be a slot receiver. Obviously we have a quarterback in place.
Holding Vick to a higher standard is one thing. Pointing fingers at him for this type of behavior is just wrong. There is no one particular way to act in this country to be considered harmless. Stop being racist about this video, grow up and realize that it is YOU who is wrong, not Michael Vick.
    Peace out,

All this from a person with the handle “BLUEEYEDDEVILS”? Are you fking kidding me? You must be the most racist person here to have actually SIGNED up for that name. I don’t see a single soul on here who signed up for the handle “BigAfroMonkeys” or even anything REMOTELY as racist as your name. How can you even breach the topic of racism with a name like that? Sounds to me like you are one of Jesse Jackson’s biggest fans, another one of the “White People Owe Me” crowd that tries to hold current society responsible for shit that wasn’t even done to you. Get off your high horse, look in the mirror, and assess what Vick really is:
A dog killing, blatantly lying, gambling man that doesn’t seem to have changed much.
It isn’t white society’s fault that being a “thug” is so damn cool in hip hop culture. People today crack me up…they want to put themselves out there as some kind of hardened criminal cause it’s just so fking cool, and then want to cry profiling when the local police/activists/racists want to call them on their BS.
Quit demonstrating your complete ignorance, and maybe people will stop thinking your ignorant.

Wow, the man went to a club… with Young Jeezy… do most of you “commenters” even know who Jeezy is? Probably not… Thug motivation is the name of his albums… Do you know what thug Motivation means? Again… probably not… most of you just like to pre-judge the man and make all kinds of negative assumptions… because you have nothing better to do…
Your jealousy and envy of this man’s OPPORTUNITIES rips you to shreds, so you have no other choice but to TRY and tear him down, hilarious… none of you “commenters” will affect this man’s life, nor will you make a difference on whether he plays or not…
So he went and had a good time in the club, WOW! With a famous rapper who probably sought HIM out, just to show him some LOVE after being in PRISON for the past 2 years… but of course ignorant people, like the most you posting… are only gonna take it at face value and create some kind of firestorm… Grow Up!
He did his time, you don’t have to LIKE the man, or AGREE with what/where he goes… You act as if you havent gone to a club, or had a drink… get outta here!
But you know what IS funny, you people can complain, moan, gripe, hate, put-down.. ALL you want… but Mike Vick WILL play again regardless of what YOU say, and there’s nothing you can do about it…. So why waste your time constantly following and hating on someone you don’t care about, let alone someone who’s situation you CANNOT and WILL NOT change… hilarious!

Also why would young Jeezy “welcome back” Vick to his home state (which Jeezy isn’t from) if it weren’t to come back from Jail?
“You people” and by you people I mean just you need to stop it with that BS. The race card went out with O.J.

i’m 99% sure that the video is NEW and post-prison.
The song being played in the background while they are walking through the club is “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy. According to wikipedia, that song was released in November of 2008, when Vick could not have been out partying. DJ’s do sometimes get records early to play at clubs, but it is impossible that this record could have been played a year or more before its iTunes release. Like a 1% near impossible chance completely unlikely chance.
And you can hear the crowd singing along with the song a bit, meaning it’s not a over-dubbed song put into the youtube video.
This video is new and Vick is a thug.

  91. Montag says: Aug 11, 2009 6:06 PM

He went in jail for a year and a half. He lost millions of dollars. He lost the only job that’s ever supported him.
Now, most of you want to keep him away from the NFL. Since when has then NFL become a league of angels? And why does it feel the need to judge the “goodness” of a person?
But my biggest question is this: why are you all so concerned with him “showing remorse”? Are you REALLY suggesting that we should punish people less strictly, simply because they’re sorry?
No…the crime should determine the time. And, once that time is served, the criminal should be free to live his life, unhampered by people like you, who will “hound” him for the rest of his professional career.
The fact is, in the long run, Vick has done a service to dogs. PETA skyrocketed following Vick’s arrest, and dogfighting arrests increased twofold, not to mention the money Vick has and will donate to animal rights groups.
