Broncos demote Brandon Marshall

The Denver Broncos have released their first 2009 depth chart.  And, according to the Denver Post, receiver Brandon Marshall has been demoted to the second team.

The move likely arises from the reality that Marshall hasn’t been practicing much, due to an injury.  But it also might be aimed at Marshall’s pride, in the hopes that he’ll do what he has to do to get back to the starting lineup.

The top three receivers are Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, and Jabar Gaffney.

At running back, free-agent acquisition Correll Buckhalter is listed as the starter, with LaMont Jordan and Peyton Hillis as the backups.  Rookie first-rounder Knowshon Moreno is listed at fourth, even though he has been getting increased work with the first team.

Finally, it appears that rookie cornerback Alphonso Smith will be taking over the kick-return and punt-return chores; he’s at the top of the chart, and Eddie Royal isn’t on it at all.

wow i would hate to be a Broncos fan right now.. but to demote him for a chance it might be about his pride and reputation?? Why would he even WANT to play hard for his team right now with the way they’ve handled their off season

Coach McDaniel… still winning friends and influencing people.
This putz won’t last past the 2010 season in Denver.

Damn right. They better teach him to get his stuff straight. Good thing the Broncos aren’t really paying him all that much, or I’d say it would be a waste to have him second string. Ha!

    pun-return chores?
Does he work for Florio too?

Denver has solid depth at WR and RB if only they had that pro bowl QB they could be very very dangerous
lets see what you can do Kyle Orton

    alright guys….
let’s have Brandon Marshall at #4 receiver and you know what else??…just for good measure…
let’s not have Eddie Royal return punts or kick offs…
    *shoots self*

    “…and pun-return chores;…”
so does that mean he’s in charge of making all the tight end, split end, end around, and illegal touching jokes?

  11. Paul_R. says: Aug 10, 2009 5:02 PM

If I could return puns with great skill, would they hire me and pay me hundreds of thousands of dollars per year?

  12. WilsonFisk says: Aug 10, 2009 5:04 PM

Okay what are we setting the over/under for weeks until Brandon Marshall no longer being on the Broncos active roster?

  13. Citizen Strange says: Aug 10, 2009 5:09 PM

Hilarious nicknames Chris Berman can use:
Eddie Royal “Pain in the Ass”
    Brandon Stokely “Carmichael”
    Jabar “The Hut” Gaffney
Brandon “Hollywood Squares Host Peter” Marshall

  14. Dewey Axewound says: Aug 10, 2009 5:16 PM

I thought they were just doing that so Kyle and he could be on equal footing…

  15. csloan99 says: Aug 10, 2009 5:37 PM

Are you crazy? No way should Royal be returning kicks…he’s potentially our most potent offensive weapon and only proven WR without Marshall. If you want to send him out there to the dogs (aka 5th string players who have only one purpose in the NFL) about 10 times a game, then you’re insane.

  16. FumbleNuts says: Aug 10, 2009 5:51 PM

Coach Mcdork has this team on a friggin’ roll. Why would any Bronco play hard for this nut case? Mike Holmgren in 2010 comin’ at ya!

  17. Silver&Black666 says: Aug 10, 2009 6:00 PM

Great…..now you pissed him off………now he will go home kick his dog, beat his wife and end up back in court.
    You see the cycle here?

  18. magsdad1 says: Aug 10, 2009 6:01 PM

Have any of you actually read the list. Moreno is listed at #4 in the backfield. Does anyone really think he will be fourth?
    Nope.
That’s why its a PREseason depth chart. It will ONLY be a story if he is 2nd team on opening day.

Excuse you!!!! You sound like a Raiders fan! BM is hurt and not practicing so no wonder he’s listed on the 2nd team. When he’s 100% healthy and taking reps he will shoot back up the depth chart, no problem. How has the Broncos “mis-handled there off-season” as related to BM? BM has a contract and needs to honor it. BM has created his own legal mess that may result in another suspension. If/when BM gets back on the field he needs to work hard (produce like last two seasons), keep his mouth shut and avoid further legal problems. Then and alone then should the Broncos negotiate a new contract.

Wow, the new head coach, Kid McBlunder has outdone himself on this one. Demote your #1 WR who’s already unhappy and has asked to be traded, to motivate him while he’s injured and can’t practice.
And then replace him with a guy who has 50 more catches in 7 years than Marshall has in two years. Make sense? Only in McDaniels mind could anything like this make sense.
Can this guy possibly make any more critical mistakes? Unfortunately for Broncos fans the answer is most likely, Yes he can.
If you look up the words “fool” and “arrogant” in the dictionary McDaniels photo is adjacent to each.

    ——————-
Dude, you had a pro bowl QB last season, and you didn’t look all that dangerous.

  23. Scoop says: Aug 10, 2009 6:22 PM

The dude has barely practiced and Gaffney is having a great camp. He’s two months away from the minimum ideal recovery time from his hip injury. He’ll be in freakin’ Atlanta during the SF game. So McD is a realist who is too busy to stroke y’alls egos (because Brandon Marshall hasn’t complained a peep) by providing some ‘mythical’ depth chart that has no meaning for at least 6 more weeks. It says that right now, Jabbar Gaffney is better than Brandon Marshall, well, because, right now Jabbar Gaffney is better than Brandon Marshall. Its pretty simple stuff. In fact, it passes all the tests for common sense.
Do you folks ever just pause for a second just to get a load of yourselves? Ever?

Proven??? Dude only played 1 season, I wouldn’t call that proven. He’ll be shut down this year. And no, Orton will not be the reason why. He was a rookie and no one accounted for him, this year, he’ll be shut down.

  25. moswesley says: Aug 10, 2009 6:30 PM

This means nothing as Marshall is the best player on the team.
Royal is a great #2, Stokley was an above average slot receiver 5 years ago – but is now old – and Jabar Gaffney is Jabar Gaffney, ’nuff said.

  26. rusH1023 says: Aug 10, 2009 6:33 PM

Amazing that people would be pissed off that their current #1 receiver isn’t returning punts. Some fans of the game are just plain stupid.

    Kyle “Orton Hears A Who”

  28. ScreamingIdiot says: Aug 10, 2009 6:55 PM

How to dismantle a top 5 offense. Dumb asses

  29. FumbleNuts says: Aug 10, 2009 7:13 PM

The only thing Orton is going to hear on the road are cheers from the 3rd interception he just threw.

    Peyton Hillis, not Hills.
