Carolina's Steve Smith latest to take dreaded cart ride

A year after making training camp headlines after punching out teammate Ken Lucas, Panthers wideout Steve Smith has been notably quiet this summer.

Now he's back in the news for unfortunate reasons.

Smith was reportedly carted off the practice field Monday with an undisclosed injury.

According to the Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald's Twitter feed, Smith had his arm looked at by a trainer.

"Not sure if it's Smith's wrist or shoulder, but he doesn't appear happy about it," Gantt wrote before Smith was carted away.

The Panthers may want to think about keeping Smith away from training camp next year.  In 2006, a hamstring injury suffered a camp cost him the first two games of the season.  Last season's punch forced the team to suspend him.

A nation of fantasy football players, not to mention Panthers fans, hope this injury doesn't prove as costly.

UPDATE: Initial x-rays are negative on Smith's shoulder.  No word on a timetable or if there will be further tests.

UPDATE II: Smith may need an MRI and is in pain.  Early indications are that he could miss the preseason.

The Eagles and Cardinals have both been struck with injury curses this year! Hopefully we'll have a full 1st string to throw at each other in the season opener!

He'll be fine. He's a beast. Even with one arm, he's still a top 10 receiver in the NFL.

Absolutely hilarious......Steve Smith is a machine especially for his size. If its his arm he will be fine. If its his shoulder that's a whole different story.

I don't like the Panthers one bit, but as a fan of the game I have to love what Smith can do. I cannot count the number of times he has been underthrown by Delhomme and still had the speed, jumping ability and hands to make an incredible catch. Often times, he can shed defenders and get some YAC. Too bad he acts like a.....wide receiver.

JaggedMark, I know right. The last time Jake didn't have Smith for the whole season was 2004 and he could only manage 29 TD passes with 16 of them going to Muhsin Mohammed.

I think the Panthers will be just fine.

I could normally care less bout the Panthers and mini-Micheal Westbrook but as a Niners fan because we have thier first-rounder next year I need as much ill-will to happen to the Panthers as possible...unfortunately unless something happens to Beason and the o-line I think they will be tough even without Smith
