The most popular player on an NFL team is often the backup quarterback, but that’s not the case in Washington.
Third-string QB Colt Brennan might be the pick.
After a great preseason last year, a vocal section of the Redskins fanbase fell in love with the University of Hawaii product, and wanted him on the field as soon as possible.
His play during training camp this year won’t do anything to calm their excitement: Brennan lasted 12 days of camp before finally throwing an interception Tuesday morning.
And he let the defense know about it plenty as the days wore on.
“That was my way of talking trash,” Brennan said. “‘For God’s sake, will you guys pick me?”’
Brennan even wagered with the defensive backs he could make it through the entire camp without an interception, so safety Chris Horton’s grab cost him $100.
“It actually put a smile on my face,” Brennan said. “Part of being a quarterback is making mistakes and bouncing back. I’ve taken a lot of chances out here. I’ve had a good little camp, but I hadn’t throw a pick yet.”
Brennan’s outspokenness stands in stark contrast to Jason Campbell’s understated nature, which may also help explain why he’s such a hit with the fans. (Or maybe it’s his acting.)
As the preseason gets going, Brennan is a player to watch closely. He’s still behind Todd Collins on the depth chart, but the backup position is up for grabs. If Brennan plays well enough, he could even apply some long-term heat to Campbell.
The Redskins have already shown this offseason they don’t fully believe in Campbell, and the SI cover subject will likely need to keep the Redskins close to .500 all season to ensure his job security.
With Collins turning 38 this year, Brennan looks like the more logical late-season replacement. The trick for Brennan will be whether he can maintain his popularity after he’s taken some regular season snaps.
