Defensive lineman Shaun Smith, who has made waves in the past by confirming, for example, that Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco swung at coach Marvin Lewis during halftime of a January 2006 playoff game, is now chattering about his most recent former team.
According to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com, Smith says that Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers wants to return to the Lions.
“That’s my best friend and he wishes he could come back here now. He
misses it,” Smith said. “You’ve been
somewhere your whole career and you have some good times and you see
the talent they’re bringing in — [Larry] Foote, [Julian] Peterson and [Phillip] Buchanon — the defense is better now. They’ve got some
quality veterans who can play and there are some young guys with
potential.”
Rogers, who was traded in 2008 from Detroit to Cleveland, earlier this year wanted the Browns to trade or release him, based on a few initial encounters with new coach Eric Mangini. Rogers has since said he wants to stay with the Browns.
Though Rogers might not get his wish to play for the Lions, he’ll return to Detroit on November 22.
I would love to have Big Baby back. He made the entire line when he was here
Who can blame him.
Who in their right mind would want to play for Mangini? The Belichick wannabe has Belichick’s ego, but that’s all he’s got.
Shaun Rogers is his BFF? I think that’s news to Shaun Rogers
Shaun Smith is an idiot. He needs to stop yapping and play football. He’s never lived up to his potential and will most likely not be much of a factor in Detroit.
Boy, it must be true because Shaun Smith is a credible source!
Shaun Smith has very little going between his ears besides cream filling. People who live in Detroit don’t want to live in Detroit.
Someone should Rogers that taking excessive amounts of LSD is not good for him or his tenuous grasp on sanity/reality.
Why else would he WANT to go back to Detroit?
Masochism?
Is he a red-rubber-ball-in-the-mouth-and-a-gimp-suit kind of guy?
Must miss the buffets.
I mean, I know the Browns aren’t exactly one of the pre-eminent franchises in the NFL, but who in the hell would want to go back to the Lions.
The next time Shaun Smith says something intelligent will be the first time.
Wow amazing that he would dislike Mangini so much that he would rather play for the Lions. Although one should give Rogers credit for realizing he is on a sinking ship and seeing 3 years of misery for Browns players and fans.
Seriously, I love the moves the coaches and staff have made this off-season. Their defense has improved drastically in one year. May take time to gel but for once they have size to stop the run, veteran leadership to teach the young guys, and a defensive coordinator that will come from everywhere. Just look what they have in the front two levels of defense (even without Devries).
DT- 330lb Smith, DT- 330lb Hill, DT 345lb Jackson, DT- 300lb Darby …. There are finally enough of them to rotate out when tired without losing size.
DE-260lb Avril (watch out for this kid this year), DE-280 lb Alama-Francis, DE 280lb White…. Once again, enough to rotate out if tired.
LB’s Petersen, Sims, and Foote with Dizon and Levy getting a chance to slowly learn the position. This ensures, barring injury or trade, that the Lions should have a really good LB group for many years.
Then almost evey aspect of their secondary has changed as well. Also, the most important part, welcoming Cunningham as the new D-Coordinator. Trust me, maybe not playoffs yet this year but I can’t wait for the test in week one against the Saints. It’ll be a good ruler on how far that defense has really come and I think it’s come a long way.
Next time, we’ll discuss the offense. Should be a great year for Smith…..:)
jaggedmark – the better question is who in their right mind would want to play for the lions? 0-16, yeah, that sounds great, i’ll take that….
Shaun Rogers is a D-bag, gets cut then runs his mouth…shocking, thats never happened before lol.
Sure. Rogers wants to go back to a place that wouldn’t pay him when he was there, mostly cheered when they got rid of him, and went 0-16 without him.
The only thing impressive about this report is that it’s the closest PFT has come to printing anything accurate involving the Browns in the past year.
Hey Shaun Smith! Bengals=Cut, Browns=Cut. 2 of the worst teams in the league the last decade. Now the Lions. They have been as bad as the Bengals and Browns. Prediction…. Lions=Cut in the near future. He’ll sign with Raiders, another worthless team, get cut and be out of the league in less than 3 years.
“The leadership definitely have to come from the leaders.”
First of all, Shaun Smith is a mediocre player with a mouth even bigger than his lard ass body. Secondly, Rogers will see fatmouth Smith on the 15th in Cleveland as the Lions visit for a pre-season game. Maybe he can “consult” porky mouth about his dumbass comments.
Smith’s confirming that Chad Johnson swung at his coach puts an end to this ridiculous idea that the Bengals would’ve ever beaten the Steelers if Palmer hadn’t gone down in that game. The Bengals weren’t equipped to win in the playoffs period — the key players just aren’t mentally tough enough. The result would’ve been the same no matter what.
I have a question about all the people that say that Mangini is a Belichik wannabe. Lest you all forget that Belechick wasn’t exactly successful his first 4 years as a head coach. He was 36-45 in 5 years with the Browns making it to the playoffs ONE TIME. Mangini is 23-25 as a head coach in 3 years, making it to the playoffs ONE TIME. Pretty comparable stats, really. Esp since Mangini has a better winning percentage.
Remember, Belechick was a prick BEFORE he won the Super Bowl too. Waiting until the press conference where he was introduced as the Jets head coach to say ‘LOL J/K, I quit, going to coach a rival insteadl!’ Can you imagine if Jason Garrett, during his introduction presser, came up to the podium and said ‘I here by resign as the head coach of the Cowboys’ and went to coach the Redskins?
i think it is funny yall dont think this is true dont you rember he was want to get trade to det befor the draft?? he still lives in DET he has wanted to come back since he left he has said that many times now his former teamate is saying he does but now u dont belive him

You kidding me? OK so he lives in Detroit, Cleveland is practically in Michigan anyways. It’s not that far away. I never read anywhere that he wanted to get traded to Detroit of all places, all that was said was he wanted to be traded.
Please enlighten me to this “article” or “source” that you have…
Shaun Smith didn’t confirm the Chad Johnson-face punch story, he corroborated it. Everybody else who was there has denied it, even after leaving the team. And do you really want to lean on the words of a man who always talks about how great he is only to be cut by two of the most talent-starved teams (defensively) in the NFL?
Clevelandrox, it’s an insult to both the Browns and the Bengals to say that they’ve been as bad as the Lions in this decade. This decade’s Lions have made the Bengals of the ’90s look like a dream team.

I WILL NOT put ANY credibility into some dudes blog. Especially when at the the end it goes on to say…
“Let’s make this happen. ”
Not to mention no where in there does Rogers say he wants to re-join the Lions. The closest it ever comes to him saying he wants to be a part of the Lions again is when he says “I’ve been told that Rogers misses Detroit and he appreciates the Lions front office.”
He doesn’t even go on to say he heard this from a “source.” This is some dudes blog about how he wants Big Baby back in Detroit.
And yes I see that there have been Rogers spottings in Detroit, but you said that the dude lives in Detroit, so lah-di-friggen-dah.
And they timed it all out too, it’s only a 2 1/2 hour drive to Cleveland, so I am trying to see what the big deal there is…
they must not let big baby waltz into titty bar dressing rooms in the land of cleve.
I realized before I posted that link that it was a blog posted with rumors.
However, you said “I never read anywhere that he wanted to get traded to Detroit of all places, all that was said was he wanted to be traded.
Please enlighten me to this “article” or “source” that you have… ”
You never comment that it has to be straight from Shaun Rogers mouth. Rumors are generally considered acceptable in the sports world if they come from respected journalists. Terry Foster is more than some dude. He is a columnist at The Detroit News, hosts a local radio show, and has been a guest on more than several national tv and radio shows not to mention published in several national print articles. Based on your criteria, a blog from Terry Foster more than supports the fact that there is a published account, regardless of the fact that it is rumor, that Shaun Rogers has expressed interest in coming back to Detroit. Though technically speaking, it didn’t necessarily say through trade.
What I find funny is the fact that Rogers said this before April, and Browns fans want to take cheap shots at Detroit, even though we had nothing to do with the comment. Hahahaha. You can tell when one bad teams sees another bad team on the up and out; they get jelous and defensive. Sorry guys, the Browns will be better in the future, just don’t, for the love of God, go 0-16 to finally see change…. it hurts.
BTW: I’d take Rogers back here with a few stipulations in his contract (down count and weight clauses). He was great when he played (not taking breathers) and held his weight in check.

I’m not taking cheap shots at Detroit, so dont put words into my mouth. I realize that before the draft he wanted to be traded, but him and Mangini talked and he is past that. Its funny how you guys are in your own little section about what this guy wants, when really no one really knows, but hints point at him staying in Cleveland for a while.
Did I say anything about you specifically? I said Browns fans. See what I mean when I say defensive :p You’re just proving my point…
Also, did anyone say he was for sure coming to Detroit? No. I don’t believe anyone did. But it is pretty obvious that he didn’t want to leave Detroit in the first place and he’d come back here now if he could have his way; but money will keep him in Cleveland. You guys sure did fleece Millen when you had the chance.
Oh yeah…”Who in their right mind would want to play for Mangini?”
It’s much better playing for the 0-16 Lions with a rookie qb, and a rookie HC, in an abandoned rundown city that burns for half the year. Detroit is a last resort for anyone whose sanity is still in tact.
Mangini has brought to the Browns the one thing they sorely lacked under Romeo….discipline. I really feel the Browns are going to be the team that everyone thought they were going to be last year.
They are not void of talent, they WERE void of discipline. They’ll raise some eyebrows, and once again every football pond ant will be proven wrong.
They thought they’d suck 2 years ago – wrong
They thought they’d compete last year – wrong : (
They think they’re going to suck this year – wrong
Its funny; I go to Detroit and see zero fires. I think that’s something people say to get off, or to simply have something to say when they have zero chance to come up with something themselves.
Cleveland, I’ve been there quite a few times, and it is on the same exact level as Detroit is. In fact, it’s damn near a carbon copy. If Detroit is a shithole, so is your home, buddy.
Once again, one bad team calling another team bad (same goes for the cities) is hillarious. You couldn’t look stupider kicking a team and city on the up’s. Should have got those kicks in last season boss… ps, we’ll see the Brownies this year.
