Several Eagles grounded for preseason opener

Eagles president Joe Banner recently asserted that his team has the “best roster in the league assuming everyone is healthy and standing at the end.”

The Eagles don’t even have everyone “healthy and standing” at the beginning.

Head coach Andy Reid this morning rolled through a list of Eagles who’ll be held out of the team’s preseason opener tomorrow night against New England.

Among the missing:  Stacy Andrews, Shawn Andrews, Todd Herremans, Victor Abiamiri, Trent Cole, Kevin Kolb, and Cornelius Ingram, Trevor Laws, Matt Schobel, and Brian Westbrook.

Kolb, who sprained a left knee ligament Monday, remains on target to return in about a week, said Reid.

“He is feeling much better, but we will not play him in this game,” Reid said regarding Kolb.

Meanwhile, an Eagles source Thursday that the team is not pursuing Mike Vick.

    Curran,
Who is “Kevin Kolbl”? Wonder if he is another intern on the Birds. I think you meant Kolb but please… s-p-e-l-l check.

best roster in the league, ha? really? yeah, i would have to disagree with that one. I am quite sure that the best roster in the NFL resides in Foxboro. This team went 11-5 w/out their best player last year. and they added a ton of talent- the pats have the best roster- by far- in the NFL, and anybody who knows the game realizes that if Brady stays healthy, the pats are a lock for 13-3 or 14-2. Joe Banner, wake up. Dont you realize the pats gave you ellis hobbs because he sucks? what a joke.

I love it! The Egirls are a joke. They are so overrated it’s not even funny. The Egirls are nothing but postseason choke artists.

herremans, Abiamiri, kolb, laws and ingram? Nooooooo…you’re kidding me?! All of these guys out for the pre-season opener?
Is your job that easy, to report such garbage? Every team in the NFL sits numerous guys during pre-season games.
Give me a break with this already. There are about 400 people who comment on here that can write better stories.

Big red is just using Caution because of the way things have gone so far in Camp Catastrophe. I think its the right thing to do frankly. If someone is rehabbing an injury, whats the point of putting them in danger for a pre season scrimmage? All of the people on that list aside from Ingram, are veterans, so they know the deal.

  6. sluggo says: Aug 12, 2009 11:43 AM

Not pursuing Mike Vike- makes sense- they’ve had 1 media circus, doubt they want another.
I think they left someone of who won’t play, off this list, I doubt is DMac plays, and at most it will be 3 snaps, too many linemen missing to take a chance.

  7. mustbechris says: Aug 12, 2009 11:49 AM

everyone on that list aside from ingram and stewart bradley will be playing in week 1 though, so i’m not concerned at all. preseason doesn’t mean anything.

  8. smiley says: Aug 12, 2009 11:59 AM

How about this…NO TEAM IS PURSUING MICHAEL VICK!!!

  9. PatAyling says: Aug 12, 2009 12:06 PM

You forgot probably the biggest injury so far this season, Stewart Bradley

  10. sn@ke says: Aug 12, 2009 12:07 PM

    Fascinating…what team isnt sitting veterans.
Aside from Ingram and Stewart Bradley, complete non-story…let it go already.

  11. jkorn1818 says: Aug 12, 2009 12:51 PM

Already starting the Bradley is out excuses. What about every other team? and every other season, each team has more elite players than that out.

Which kinda illustrates the relative value of having a Tom Brady on your roster. So if the Pats have the best roster, if and when they do not win it all, just as they have not done in the past four seasons in spite of having the best players, best coach, newest video cameras etc, where do you put the blame? On coaching?

    follow up question vox:
where do you put the blame on the fact that your cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since clinton’s first term?

They’re going to have a tough time doing anything with you on your knees keeping them busy in the locker room…

  15. AdamEagle5 says: Aug 12, 2009 1:30 PM

@sim448 …if Hobbs sucks, and he started on the Pats for the last 4 years… what does that say about “the best roster in the NFL”? You, sir, are an idiot.
@vox …when the pats lose, it’s always because the other team cheated them. obviously.

  16. Nard100 says: Aug 12, 2009 1:32 PM

Corn Kolb probably jimmied his own knee so he won’t have to face the Giants pass rush!!!! Go Giants!

  17. PFTiswhatitis says: Aug 12, 2009 1:41 PM

    @Voxdumbass
If your team goes to the big game as many times as the Pats have over the last decade you do not really have anything to complain about or anyone/anything to blame.

“where do you put the blame on the fact that your cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since clinton’s first term?”
Bad luck, mostly. Not surprised to see that you’re not man enough to answer my question though. Where do you put the blame for the Patriots having no fans 10 years ago? Also, did you know that the Patriots had a 12 year stretch where they didn’t even make the playoffs, let alone win a playoff game and a 21 year stretch where they didn’t win any playoff games? I guess that just goes to show you that even shitty teams can rise up (some need to cheat, others don’t).

  19. Section731 says: Aug 12, 2009 2:07 PM

Herremans is out for the entire preseason.

  20. purpleguy says: Aug 12, 2009 2:12 PM

Depth on a roster is as important as anything — the Eagles are losing depth. Also, some of these injuries will nag the players all year, nixing their effectiveness. Those who say there’s nothing to worry about are viewing the team through silver and green glasses.

  21. jreed says: Aug 12, 2009 2:24 PM

Whats the big deal with resting your starters??? I remember last year there was talk on why more teams dont do this in preseason…Now that the Eagles are doing it..its a huge controversy?? Dont get it….Really Dont get it.

  22. jreed says: Aug 12, 2009 2:28 PM

So Vox…were you just calling the cowboys a shitty team?? Thought you were a fan of the boys?….Oh and the Cowboys.

  23. Jackal138 says: Aug 12, 2009 3:41 PM

If the Patriots did this, it would be heralded as a genius move by Kraft and Billy Jesus, keeping the starters rested for the best season of football man has ever seen on this earth.
But the Eagles are doing it, so Joe Banner is a fool and they are scum. I get it.
And I love how the people talking doom-and-gloom with injuries insist that every little thing “will be nagging the players all season” — uh, hello? Your team is going to have the same problem. Dudes are going to be nicked up, but so will the other team. That’s football.

  24. Jackal138 says: Aug 12, 2009 3:42 PM

Vox is right, though. If the Pats have the best roster in the NFL they should have been able to make a SB appearance every year – after all, the Ravens made Trent Dilfer a SB winning QB, and nobody claims that Brian Billick is half the “genius” of Belichek.

Vox, I usually don’t even read your posts anymore, due to complete biased statements which are typed without any previous thinking…. but this one I did… For once, I agree with you on this one.
