Cutler wants say in final roster

And so as the last quarterback who mistakenly believed that his job duties included the functions of a General Manager fades (we think) into the Mississippi sunset, a new candidate for player-executive emerges.

Jay Cutler.

Cutler, per the Arlington Daily Herald, intends to give his input on the team's final roster.

"I think they're definitely going to ask me," Cuter said.  "If they don't ask me, I'm going to tell them what I think because I've got to be the one throwing to them on game day, and I've got to trust them."

Look, the extent to which the starting quarterback and his receivers work together has to be a significant factor in shaping the depth chart.  But there's a line, somewhere, that the quarterback shouldn't try to cross.

Publicly indicating that he intends to chime in on who should stay and who should go probably is on the other side of that line.

And if the Bears don't nip this in the bud, it won't stop with Cutler telling the media that he plans to tell the coaches which guys should be turning in their playbooks.  What if they keep someone he doesn't want?  Will Cutler make his feelings known outside the organization?

Or what if Cutler isn't happy with the offseason decisions that the franchise is making?  Will he make like Lord Favre (and, to a certain extent, Donovan McNabb) and make his displeasure known?

Caveat emptor, Chicago.  We know you wanted him, but just how closely were the powers that be paying attention to how this guy was behaving as he was trying to get out of Denver?

Good for him McDaniels let him go then. That guy comes from the school of Belichick, if a player for Belichick/McDaniels says this publicly they're getting cut the next day.

I think Jay Cutler still needs a Super Bowl win 10 years ago for his GM to be willing to listen to him.

Florio, y the jab at McNabb?

He's been getting his brains beat in all his career, been throwing, or attempting to throw, to receievers who couldn't make a high school team and got unfairly benched last season.

Didn't lord peyton bitch about his teammates publicly, fight with them on field?

Comparing McNabb, a true class act, to cutler is just wrong...

Oh I see why u did it, you did it on purpose, that's kinda whorish

And, apparently, Jay Cutler is a QB we can count on to cross that line. I wonder if this kid will ever mature, or if he is really on his way to being Jeff George Part II.

Uhm, why the hate on Cutler? He's right...

All QBs should have at least some decisions on the players they need to operate with from week to week. It's helpful to both the team and the QB. The QB gets to choose players he feels comfortable with, especially receivers, which can and will lead to better production most of the time.

And if the QB chooses players who eventually don't work out, the team has a scapegoat in the QB.

But I think the guy who is blocked by, and passes to, and hands off the ball to the players on the field is much better suited to make roster decisions than some dude sitting up in his office.

You're off-base here Florio, by a lot. I can tell you think he should have SOME say in who his players are, but you don't think he should be allowed to say something? He's not complaining about the cafeteria food, or saying that he heard a rumor that Bobby Wade told his cousins girlfriends uncles son that he secretly thinks Tarvaris Jackson is a pussy.

He's simply talking football and saying something that SHOULD be common sense.

This is just the begining Bears fans. Cutler is a little B***H and it's just a matter of time before he starts throwing his O-line under the bus, crying like a little baby when he doesn't get his way and chewing out his receivers when they drop a ball. Trust me, you will get sick of his act by week 8. I was the biggest Cutler fan when he was in Denver, but his pissy attitude gets old quick.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Hilarious! By seasons end...you Teddy Bear Rubes will be demanding that this ass Cutler is ran out of the 2nd City! But somehow you will blame the Packer or Vikings for your 6-10 record!

  12. texline says: August 13, 2009 8:54 AM

Seems Denver made the right decision after all. I do find the comparison to Favre humorous though.Favre is a Super Bowl winner, league mvp, Super Bowl mvp, and holds virtually every QB record there is. Cutler, on the other hand, has won nothing, least of all the favor of the fans in Denver, and seems to be on the same track in Chi-Town.

Couldn't happen to a nicer club. What irony. They finally get their "franchise" quarterback and may end up wishing they'd kept Orton.
I wonder about Cutler's temperment, if by mid season, his elite set of receivers are "zigging" when they should have "zagged" or dropping balls that in his estimation, they should have not?
    Calling Dr. Phil.

And to think Bears fans thought the trade to get crybaby was a good one.
Crybaby Cutler is what Urlacher said he is, and the whole city of Chicago is going to find that out. Cutler only put up good numbers because of Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall. With no receivers in Chitown, watch Cutler crash and burn, and when the city starts calling for his head he will try to whine his way out of town.

  22. Marty says: August 13, 2009 9:10 AM

The guy delusionally continues to think he belongs in the same sentences as Brady, Manning, and Favre because of some decent stats?

Thank you, thank you, thank you Chicago for taking this whinny, sniveling brat out of Denver. Maybe they should've picked up T.O. It would be a fitting match and Urlacher could pummel them both.

This article is completely BS because what Jay said has nothing wrong with it at all! If you guys don't think every respected QB in the league has influence on management about which WRs make the team, you have got to be kidding. Romo practically got Owens booted from the Cowboys! This is just another offseason article with someone trying to make something out of nothing....

And you are all jealous your team did not trade for Cutler. Get over it. Every analyst at training camp said "I don't want to buy into the Jay Cutler hype, but he made plays I couldn't believe."

  30. Pastabelly says: August 13, 2009 9:26 AM

@Marty, it doesn't make a difference what positions he wants input on. He should just keep his mouth shut and give his input to the coaches, if asked, and not the media.

It is pretty clear that there would not have been a healthy situation with Cutler in Denver. He may have tried to test McDaniels or any other rookie coach who replaced his "guy" in Denver. Shanahan had the aura of offensive genius in Denver and Cutler probably never appreciated some young coach replacing the legend that he respected. Cutler has a lot of prima donna in him. It remains to be seen if raw talent will be enough to get by with him or if other factors will get in the way of him becoming a great quarterback. He's not there yet. He's only there in his mind.

  34. FFTnet says: August 13, 2009 9:38 AM

Florio, you need to stop your Jay Cutler Bias.

    From Ron Turner (bears OC)

"“If you’re a receiver, the best thing you can have is your quarterback asking the coordinator about you,” Turner said with a laugh. “It doesn’t get any better than that if you’re a receiver, right?"

From that quote, you can see that the Bears are perfectly OK with Cutler chiming in and telling who he likes.

And Jerry Angelo has publicly said that he plans on getting Jay Cutler's opinion when it comes to roster cuts.

  35. Staff Sergeant Bandazewski says: August 13, 2009 9:42 AM

It's funny to see how this quote is taken in and out of context depending on which newspaper you follow. As a Bears fan, I read as much as possible for the variety but also like this, for the various spin.

The rest of the quote went like this "But [offensive coordinator Ron Turner] and I have been on the same page since the start of training camp with what guys we wanted to see work in with me."

He was responding to a reporter asking him about his expectations of preseason and which receivers he thinks will make an impact. He has consistently mentioned Devin Aromashadu in after practice interviews when asked what he thought of the WR play that particular practice. That guy in particular is a long shot to make the roster and Cutler is pushing for the guy because he's made plays. Thats the type of QB you want. A vocal leader who voices his opinion to make the team better.

Does anyone believe Peyton Manning has no input? Tom Brady? Carson Palmer? Phillip Rivers? Donovan McNabb? Those guys ALL lead vocally as well as by example. And like it or not, Cutler is in that category and yes, his opinion does count.

  36. GRpatriot says: August 13, 2009 9:52 AM

I seriously laugh at all you people that sound like jilted ex-girlfriends when talking about Cutler, when he does and says things and you spin them wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of context.

"OMG he's talking about the fans...see I TOLD YOU we were right about him! Wahhhhhhhhhh"

"OMG he says he wants input on the WR's...he...he...I just can't believe him!!! I'm SOOO glad he's gone" (then secretly rushing off to cry realizing you're stuck in your current terrible relationship, in Denver's case, one Mr. Kyle Orton)

Staff Sergeant Bandazewski's comment nailed it 100% on the head...I can't wait to see what "that bastard" Cutler did next, while Orton hears another boo until he's replaced with the next bad relationship (aka Chris Simms)

  39. Sports Fan says: August 13, 2009 10:07 AM

HA HA HA HA........Look at the haters.......nothing was said when Big Ben said he wanted taller wide recievers, nothing was said when McNabb wanted T.O. nothing was said when Brady wanted Moss, if you don't think most Q.B.'s voice their opinions to the coaches your crazy only difference is Cutler is under the media microscope because of the big trade.

  42. WeMissYouDan says: August 13, 2009 10:30 AM

Cutler is right, he deserves a say in what happens, at least as far as the receivers are concerned. That being said, publicly voicing those opinions is where he's crossing the line. I don't think this kid is ever going to get it, and I can't believe there is NO ONE within his circle of people helping him get it. Of course, he got his way in Denver by acting like a child, and that only serves to reinforce the notion that this is the right way to do things. Still, someone (agent/friend/family member) should be in this guy's ear telling him that, in the long run, you are going to alienate anyone and everyone by acting like you are more important than you are. Plenty of guys have proven that talent alone does not guarantee employment in the NFL, and a teamwork mentality is what's really important in this game.

    Well said, Staff Sgt.

God, you people are such gullible sheep. You're like a flock of dumb birds that follows Florio (and the rest of the media), swooping in unison whichever way he swoops.

You just blindly buy into his anti-Cutler bias, which he's pushed all summer long. And since so many of you already have your various agendas/axes to grind agaisnt Jay (AFC west/NFC North people), I bet you gladly open up and say "ahh" for whatever tripe MoFlo and the rest of the media want to feed you.

    The REALITY is:

Jay's been razor sharp in camp, saying and doing all the right things as a team leader and face of the franchise, clicking with his receivers, offense, and coaches.
The entire atmoshphere of camp is electric, it's palpable--this team is poised for big things, with Jay at the helm.

Unlike Queenville and Packland (where dysfunction reigns, especially in the former), everything has been just PEACHY in Bears camp.

    That's the TRUTH.
    Not some contrived, systematic character-assassination.

But once again, you make malaria out of a mosquito bite when it comes to Jay, a mountain out of a divot. And the gullible zombies come out in droves to pile onto this bunch of nothing, to wag their faggy little sanctimonious self-righteous reactionary fingers at everyone...

"Oh! What a BRAT! I can't believe he HAD AN OPINION AND WANTED TO SHARE IT!! The NERVE of him!"

What a bunch of pus$ies you all are.

The Bears are in a position where they must meticulously evaluate a handful of unproven but talented prospects, then award/order roster spots accordingly. Bears want and need all the assessments/variables/perspectives they can get/use, including Jay's.

Jay simply saying he wants to give his input is merely S.O.P. for the Bears--it is appropriate, intelligent, and expected.

This "story", then, is about as ho-hum as a cheese sandwich.

You don't think Neckbeard gave his input?

This is what Jay said (from chicagobears.com, a story about sorting out the receivers, who will make the cut, etc.):

Having Cutler push for a certain receiver to make the 53-man roster certainly won’t hurt their cause.

“I think [the Bears] are definitely going to ask me,” Cutler said. “If they don’t ask me, I’m going to tell them what I think because I’ve got to be the one throwing to them on game day and I’ve got to trust them. But [offensive coordinator] Ron [Turner] and I have been on the same page since the start of training camp in what guys we wanted to see working in with me and what guys have stepped up and what direction we want to go with this group.”

But you dolts go on with your bashing, you blind gullible sheep, you Florio zombies who eagerly await your marching orders.

Believe whatever contrived nonsense Florio hands you, whatever media-manufactured crap they try to slander Jay with.
"He's a brat!! See--he even wants to give the Bears his opinion!"

Get out of here with that garbage.
You people are like empty vessels, waiting for the media to fill you up with opinions. So impressionable. A bunch of parrots.

No wonder Obama won. No wonder he gets to wreck the country at will and on a whim.

The media loves him. (The same media that wants Vick re-instated).

We'll see how Jay's impact on the Bears plays out.

But the way I see it, the more the media (Florio) dislikes him, the better he is.

Carson Palmer - Widely respected in the league and vastly underrated
Phillip Rivers - Pro Bowler (and no fan of Cutler)

Should a quarterback be asked his opinion about the roster, who he works best with, what might work best for him? Yes.
Should a quarterback undermine the coaching staff in a public forum by stating he wants a say in personnel decision? No.

All of the above guys have earner their way into their opinion mattering.

So, what do we have so far......

    - A strong arm
    - Accurate passer
    - Makes many mistakes based off of trying to "create plays"
    - Rubs his teammates the wrong way (the majority of the locker room in Denver was not sad to see the Cutler the boy go)
    - Publicly decries anything that does not fit within his parameters

He may be talented, but he's a pain in the ass.

Check out MileHighReport and read what the interviews of Kyle Orton's teammates say about him. Number one on the list is that he is a professional.

He'll be the Bears' Farve for the next several year, with a LITTLE bit of Ryan Leaf thrown in.

I always liked the toughness of a Pittsburgh, or a Chicago, and disliked the climate controlled, change the rules to suit us, whining of Indy. Now with such an egotist as there spokesman, Chicago is now in the "hope you lose them all" catagory. And it saddens me when all these enablers justify the behavior of these out-of-control prima donna's and bring it to football.

Florio, usually, well, sometimes you are right on but as for this topic, you are clearly just stirring the pot. And, as far as a good journalism goes, good job. It makes us all talk about it.

Cutler, or any other good quarterback has to know and trust their wide recievers. They need to know what to expect performance wise from a guy. It is not like the Bears have a bunch of all pro recievers currently on their roster. His input is invaluable to the Bears organization as to who runs good routes, who can go up and get a ball in traffic, and who will alligator arm a pass when you know the hit is coming (former Bear Bernard Berrian). Basically, who he is going to be able to count on in the clutch. I love it he wants to give input. I hope D.A. is as good as Cutler endorses.

Bears fans are nothing but ecstatic over Cutler. The talent, the leadership, the whole package.

As far as all the "pu&&y" and "cry baby" comments from all of the heartbroken Broncos fans and jealous Vikings fans...shut your pieholes.

Broncos fans, if your little Hitler of a new head coach hadn't crapped in his nest, Chicago would never have Cutler, blame the coach not he quartback.

Vikings fans, Cutler's going to throw you a beating twice this year with or without the cheating "Williams Wall" that has had a "good 'ol boy" state judge protect them from a federal matter. They will get their's too. Hopefully they mess around and have to serve their suspension in December. I can't wait to hear all the whining then! Purple, what a manly color...

  57. Bob Loblaw says: August 13, 2009 11:17 AM

Good, I hope the listen to him on the WRs.

Then it's just a matter of time until he gives input on who to keep on the offensive line -- those arethe guys blocking for him.

The the RBs -- those are the guys he hands the ball off to.

Then the defensive personnell and special teams -- those are the guys who determine field position and get the ball back to him.

And just wait until future drafts when he publically pushes for guys that he wants over team needs.

Hopefully in the near future, if he doesn't like the way the team is being coached, he just goes straight to ownership with any philosophical disputes so the Bears can bring in the coaches that Cutler wants -- after all those are the guys who are calling plays that Cuter has to execute and making decisions that impact Cuter's job as the quarterback.

I was a big fan of him being traded after what happened with McDaniels not manning up to trying to trade him (Right or wrong, the guy should have at least been up front and not tried to backdoor Cutler). But this is a bit ridiculous.

I think Cutler wants to be Starting QB, GM, Exec. VP in charge of Football Operations, Exec. VP in charge of Player Personnel, and Owner. That's a lot for one plate...

I've lost a little respect for Florio on this one. Please Mike, next time, post the full extend of the comments:

"Oh yeah," Cutler said. "I think they're definitely going to ask me. If they don't ask me, I'm going to tell them what I think because I've got to be the one throwing to them on game day, and I've got to trust them. But (offensive coordinator) Ron (Turner) and I have been on the same page since the start of training camp in what guys we wanted to see working in with me and what guys have stepped up and what direction we want to go with this group."

According to coach Lovie Smith, players have input, but only so much.

"Yeah, sure, all the players have influence, I mean we listen to them," he said. "Of course we'll listen to the quarterback, and not only the quarterback, but the rest of our team, too. We want to know how a player fits into the rest of the group. The quarterback has to feel comfortable with the receivers, so we listen to them but in the end we know who is going to make those kinds of decisions."

  61. Rasputin says: August 13, 2009 11:40 AM

It's not that the QB's opinion isn't important. And it's not like any starting QB can't just walk into his HC's office and ask "Why the fudge did you just sign that jackass?"

It's that you don't say this kind of crap to the media. You don't distract the team from winning for one instant. Especially when the idiotic things you say are really all about flexing your ego.

    STFU and play.

Wow - It's interesting to see how a harmless article/comment from Cutler can incite such throes of nerd-fury here. But it's hilarious reading some of your comments cause the caliber of your remarks has me picturing many of you in oversized baby bonnets and diapers throwing a fit at your mom's computer. lol - So keep up the mindless yet rampant anti Bear sentiment! Jealousy is not very becoming but, er...um, you guys make it work!!! ; ) Serves as a good giggle for real football fans who are tired of meaningless non-news items and just READY FOR THE SEASON TO START!!!! lol! Thank you and cheers.

This idiot has sh*t cept a whiny attitude. Even when Favre did try to get involved with management it was an attempt to get Randy Moss, and even then he would have forfeited some of his salary.

Don't compare one of the greatest QB's of all time to one of the biggest cry babies in the game!

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. Corky....er, Cutler just doesn't get it. In order to be a leader he needs to be a winner. Something he couldn't do w. one stud WR named B.Marshall, and two very good WR's, Stokely & Royal. Now Bear fans expect him to lead their team to the promised land!?! Without a true #1 WR!?! It's going to be a looong winter in Chicago and Cutler will once again show he isn't a winner. Oh well, Life Goes On (pun intended).

the game of football goes a little something like this....

You do your job, you trust your guys will do theirs and you hope you move and function as one unit together. If you don't do your, the other guy doesn't do his, then its the coach's job to put another guy in their for the sake of the team....not a single position.

Who does this guy really think he is??? Does he have an MVP/Super Bowl win I don't know about....is he a hall of famer come back to play a new legacy in somebody else's body? NO....he is a punk who thinks he is owed something. You play this sport with blood sweat and tears...not your mouth. Shut up and try winning a few before we hear back from you. Be thankful you have your blessings and opportunity and go make something of it instead of trying to cry yourself to a super bowl.

Thats right. NFL quarterbacks should just shut up and never speak their mind. Never stand up for themselves!

If they do their just whiny little bitches.

They need to let the real experts on football do the talking.

Dim witted, overweight, nimrods who spend their days posting insipid comments on websites responding to inflamatory swill published by some tool who has never seen the world through a facemask are the real experts!!!!

Why can't this Cutler jerk see that? How dare he have an opinion!!!

Cutler should quit football, eat his way to being fat and out of shape and take stupid pills for a year and then maybe he'll have the same credibility as the true experts that post on this fountain of football wisdom that they call the internet!

  81. Avs4Ever says: August 13, 2009 1:58 PM

I grew up a Broncos fan and liked Cutler for a while. Once I saw what type of player he is (i.e. whiny baby), my view changed of him. He thinks he's a prima-donna, and continues to tell everyone his arm is better than Elway's, Brady's, etc. (I'm sure Montana and Marino are in there somewhere).

Who won Super Bowls were MVP's? He's shooting himself in the foot by wanting to make these decisions. It will only lead to dissent in the locker room. "Cutler didn't like so-and-so, so why should I play for him?"
I believe that's why the Broncos did so poorly recently because there was more going on off the field than we saw.

How many times did we see Jay argue a call by an official, then turn around and do something stupid because he couldn't get his mind back on the game. Some people call that passion for the game, but I call it being whiny. If you can't control your emotions, the other team has already won!!

  82. SixBurghDude says: August 13, 2009 1:58 PM

    Dewey,

Get off your F*ckin' soapbox & stop preaching you whinny little CUNT(ler)...you know nothing about me FOOL...I've been a Steeler diehard since the early 70's, born & raised, LOUD & PROUD...so save it with the bandwagon bullshit, if you had half the brains you try to make people believe you have, with your "witty" little posts (btw, they might actually be funny if they could be heard in your assinine midwestern accent), you'd know that the MAIN reason for the enormity of SteelerNation, is moreso because of the mass relocation by so many S.W. Pa. natives in the late 70's thru most of the 80's, while the city was undergoing a transformation from blue-collar to white-collar, than for bandwagon jumping like the Cheatriots, who had no fan base to speak of, prior to this millenium...don't believe me PUNK? Check out footage of the 70's Super Bowls the Steelers played in, particularly SBXIV which was played in the back-yard of their opponent the Rams (that's
right son, the Rams played in L.A. once upon a time & in Cle. before that) yet the stadium was blatantly partisan Steeler...I always respected the Bears, but until your team proves to be more than a ONE-HIT wonder, since they haven't been able to do so in about 60 years, don't come on here spewing your bile about every other team that makes the news (most of which is GOSSIP) & acting like your team is a bunch of choirboys...TANK JOHNSON had a F*CKIN' arsenal in his house asswipe!!!

  83. bgaima01 says: August 13, 2009 1:59 PM

PFT and a lot of you posters on this sight are a joke. First off, PFT doesn't post my comments because only they are allowed to name call. Then, I have to read you idiots try to find flaws in a young Pro-Bowl QB with a bright future. He said and did nothing wrong. I can't believe the amount of fans that are jealous that they did not trade for Jay Cutler. It makes me smile being a Bears fan knowing you are all saying "he will be irrelevant" and "he has no WRs" whereas he could very well be an MVP canidate this year.

Read up kids, a ton of analysts that were at Bears camp had said "I do not want to buy into the hype about Cutler, but he made some plays that made me realize why there is one". Call a spade a spade, Cutler is a good QB. Worry about your own team and stop being jealous that the Bears are a top team in the NFC now.

  84. bgaima01 says: August 13, 2009 2:00 PM

  86. Jackal138 says: August 13, 2009 2:25 PM

Cutler's not wrong to want input, he's wrong to talk like he has it. What he did to get out of Denver didn't happen on an island - Bears fans are ignoring that he acted like a little b%^ch by moaning his way off the Broncos, and the fact that what he said reinforces what we saw from him then.

Maybe he's just concerned, but his track record makes it suspect.

    Oh, and Hey, Vox.

44-6, and the "class act" Romo falls down crying in the shower.

Who does Cutler think he is?? He hasn't been a starting QB, much less in the league, long enough to think he can go around telling the powers that be who he will or will not work with. I was originally furious with McDaniels for the entire fiasco, but now I think maybe the man is smarter than I gave him credit for! We shall see. Go Broncos!

I think Jay Cutler is a highly talented QB, and the Bears were smart ot get him. Isn't it just normal procedure for franchises to get roster input from their starting QBs?
Seems like a lot of angry people are out to get Jay for no good reason.
