Michael Vick to the Eagles

The speculation is over.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Thursday night on air that Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

To paraphrase the fearless leader of PFT: Wow.

The deal was first reported, as best we can tell, by Dan Sileo of WDAE in Tampa.  Buzz had been building about a possible deal with the Eagles for about an hour all over the Internet before Mort reported the news.

The destination is surprising on a number of levels.

First, there were multiple media reports that the Eagles weren’t interested, including one by Mort himself.  Our own Tom Curran had an Eagles source tell him as recently as Tuesday that the team wasn’t interested in Vick.

But as Mr. Florio pointed out numerous times, Philadelphia’s statements and whispers before the Vick signing are the least of their concerns now.

They now have a vocal fan base and a certain sensitive starting quarterback to address.

2 year deal? Is Vick retarded? Wait….don’t answer that.
In other news, Vick was seen leaving the Eagles HQ on a stretcher, so he must be a member of the team.

I have no doubt he’ll be welcomed by the scuzzy Philly faithful with open arms. Hell, they may cancel school tomorrow just to throw the man a parade. Oh well – God bless America…

What a shame. Really. The Eagles organization is going to regret this decision. I was planning on attending a few games this season – that just saved me a boat load of cash.
That being said, as a Raiders fan… my second favorite team will be ANYONE WHO PLAYS THE EAGLES…. GET ‘EM BOYS!!

Smart move… Mcnabb is a stud but he averages only 12 games a year. Ron Mexico will do whatever he is asked (just ask his cell mate and the ladies he infected). I’d treat him like any felon and have him doing pos duty.

  74. nasheagles says: Aug 13, 2009 8:51 PM

    LOL@Vick.
    I wonder what he’ll do.

  78. Pastabelly says: Aug 13, 2009 8:52 PM

Interesting that the Patriots announcers (Criqui and Cross) haven’t mentioned the signing. Of course, Criqui sucks. Why does Kraft put up with such incompetence every year from Criqui? What is this, 10 years now?

  79. Slow Joe says: Aug 13, 2009 8:52 PM

I’m shocked, but in retrospect, it’s actually perfect. McNabb is not exactly a supportive starting QB to his backups, but he would be a good role model for Vick to follow in his attempt to be a starting-caliber QB.
And, with most Eagles fans being such unrepentant douchebags, the uproar over the signing is probably minimalized the most in Philadelphia.

  80. SheHateMe says: Aug 13, 2009 8:52 PM

I’m rarely at a loss for words, but this just blows me away! What could Jeff and Andy have been thinkin’ (or smokin’). Do they expect to make a receiver or something out of this guy? Although I’m not a Vick hater (or fan for that matter) I truly didn’t expect him to play this year. WOW!

  81. Theismans Leg says: Aug 13, 2009 8:53 PM

  84. BleedGreen says: Aug 13, 2009 8:53 PM

As an Eagles fan… I’m conflicted. He’s a piece of shit. We don’t REALLY need him… but if he helps us win, so be it. He’s obviously not going to be the QB, so he’ll play maybe 3-4 plays a game as a wildcat type player. I’m not mad at the front office for trying to win.

  85. mustbechris says: Aug 13, 2009 8:53 PM

    Well, I stand corrected.
    And shocked.
At the same time, I’m pretty intrigued by this. I can’t wait to see how Andy utilizes his talents.

  86. string888 says: Aug 13, 2009 8:54 PM

  87. LarryBird18 says: Aug 13, 2009 8:54 PM

Wow!!! Did not see that one coming….I’m confused as hell…sign Mike Vike to play in the wildcat that you probably wont use often . (5 plays a game maybe?) Oh well…Hopefully now the Eagles will release Mcnabb and get rid of that big contract..so the Vikesters can swoop him up….God Damn you Sage “FumbleCopter” Rosenfels…God Damn you T-Jack…God Damn you Brad Childress…I’m pulling for Lezlie the Fragggee (Leslie Fraiser) next year…

  88. Florios_a_tool says: Aug 13, 2009 8:54 PM

You will not be missed, and you’re not morally superior for jettisoning the league now considering that Jerramy Stevens is in the league and you don’t give a damn. But rapists aren’t worse than dog killers. Right……

  94. philcommander says: Aug 13, 2009 8:57 PM

    LOL!
    Bring it on PETA!
He’s gonna sit on the bench for a year and let PETA get use to the idea that he plays here…so it’s really no big deal. PETA will eventually get tired and go shut down some puppy mills that the Amish run and do some real good (as they sometimes do).
I’m glad Philly gets to see some of the excitement…it’s been kinda quiet around here since TO left…unless you factor in Andys little convict kids.

  107. redsquare says: Aug 13, 2009 9:13 PM

Why would the one team who doesn’t need him–with a solid offense, some dynamic receivers, and a quite good backup quarterback–want to take him on? It really makes little sense. Why take on all the controversy when you’re perfectly fine without him?
But I hope they regret it. I hope they get a backlash that will make an example of them, and that Vick fails, and that the team chemistry suffers. I really do. The guy’s been out of the league for a long time, and his type of play won’t age well–he’ll age more like a running back than a typical QB. What kind of an investment is that?
Just when I was starting to waffle on my support for the Cowboys–of whom I’ve been a near-lifelong (oft-suffering) fan–now I’m back behind them 100%. Revenge will be sweet.

  108. watchmorebaseball says: Aug 13, 2009 9:14 PM

You must be suckers for punishment or bad publicity as that is what you will get. The players better keep their dogs under lock & key if he visits your homes…and come to think of it, the Eagles mascott better do the same. I am so sick and tired of reading the dog-worshipper comments. I have nothing against dogs, but all you self-righteous dog lovers really need to go somewhere and get a life of some sort. H was not sentenced to a lifetime of punishment. He served the time that our judicial system determined was appropriate and should be free to get on with his life, as you should get on with yours. Most of you are probably only lukewarm fans anyway, so nobody’s going to miss you when you go off to sulk for the season. Leave what is shaping up to be a really great season (Cutler, Owens, Brady, and other, storylines) to those of us who really like the game!!!

Vick, as a young QB is a work in progress. Even worse he had a horrible offensive line and an even worse defense the years he was with atlanta.
A lot of those rushing yards were more from necessity than design. there were two weapons in atlanta. Vick and Crumpler……..Even some of the better QB’s in the league would have been hard-pressed to be star….Anyway, GO EAGLES.

You can truly determine the “true football fans” that are totally against Michael Vick. The are the ones who wouldn’t know a subject and a predicate if they came into the room with name tags. They sound like they came from the back woods of Gut Bucket, Mississippi, which would explain their abundant hatred for Vick. You ranted and raved that you just knew Goodell would not reinstate him. You were wrong. You knew for a fact that no team would ever pick him up. Guess what, you were wrong again. Why don’t you just admit that you resent highly that Michael Vick is getting a second chance and will possible come out of this a better man and with a little cash in his pocket…..once his obligations are paid. You don’t make that kind of money, why should he? You say he is the most dispicable human being around……killing dogs, etc. Everyone obviously does not agree with you and your “knowledge and expertise in the football area” is not being considered. So…..get over it!!!

If you think you’re on moral high ground because you’re walking away because Mike Vick is playing football, you’re delusional. The fact is that a rapist, Jerramy Stevens, is still in the league, but it takes a dog killer for you to walk away says a lot about you. You’re telling me that someone who killed dogs is worse than someone who raped women? Are you serious. Please don’t hit anyone with that highfalutin nonsense about an organization having no moral fibre when Jerramy Stevens is in the league and you were still fans while he played. Good riddens. We’ll see how long that not watching the NFL thing lasts. So does that also mean you’re going to quit your job if your company remains a sponsor of the Eagles as well or are affiliated with sponsors of the Eagles in any way? You must be suckers for punishment or bad publicity as that is what you will get. The players better keep their dogs under lock & key if he visits your homes…and come to think of it, the Eagles mascott better do the same. I bet a lot of homeless pitbulls will be going missing in Phila. in the next two years.
    _____

How about this: Stop flagging players for spiking the ball when they score a touchdown and start banning criminals from the league! I’ll take poor sportsmanship over a criminal any day!

No surprise then that Philly fan’s reaction is generally positive toward the Mexico signing. Considering the generally low brow nature of the region, its a perfect fit.
Here’s hoping for a career ending and/or severe injury to Ron Mexico. Yes, I sincerely mean this, and no, I would not wish this upon anyone else but him. He is a sociopath who has no value to society. If he did what he did to humans, he be sitting on death row right now.

  143. redsquare says: Aug 13, 2009 10:09 PM

Michael Vick isn’t a “young quarterback”. He’s an old running back. He was never a very good passer; now he’s a 29-year-old runner who’s been out of training for a couple years. By the time he gets back into “football shape”, he’ll be a 30-year-old runner who’s had little playing time and less leadership experience for 3 years.
So Philly just made an unrepentant washed-up former star a millionaire, and what’ll they get for it? A guy who’s no better than anyone else on the team at their respective positions.
In the dreams of Eagles fans without moral compasses, the Eagles just added a brilliant edge to the team that smashed the Cowboys at the end of last season.
In reality, the loser Eagles who sputtered out in the playoffs last year just wasted money on a short-term investment who will only bring stress to the organization.

All I can say is that I do believe in a second chance. However, as a person who has worked in the corporate side of things I just don’t see how it is justified that he should be reinstated. He is a gifted athlete but I know for sure if I went to the big house as soon as they saw a felony on my record you could kiss my resume goodbye. It is a privelage to play in the NFL and I do not believe that just because he did play before and did his time that he should get another chance to do so. I wish the best for him as a person but for the people that say he did his time he should be let back in you must not be working in the real world

Hey, if it looks like a rat, smell like a rat and moves like a rat, guess what? Its a rat!
Unreal. This guy can kill dogs, lie to the commisioner of the NFL and the owners of the Atlanta Falcons and still the Eagles want him. Truely I am disapointed. He will not have paid his dues until he spends time in the areana with the same number and type of dogs he touchered.
Vick had a litte vaction in the big house and now he thinks he has repented. (For what ever reason Mike, my Pitt Bulls diagree!)
In my opinion he has not changed. I saw him for the first time a few years ago at the Norfolk Sports Club Jamborie. I did not know who he was at that time. But as he strutted his way on stage with so much attitude, I said to myself I hope he can speak as well as he walks and as loud as his bling is. Needless to say he lived up to my expectations. Then this weekend the news reported that he spent 12 minutes in Atlanta speaking on the ills of dog fighting and only allowed one news crew into the meeting and then exited to a limo to get out of Dodge. If Michael truely wants to repent, why doen’t he join a federal task force and bring down the house on dog fighting and share every thing he knows about who is in the business.
Last week he walked into Harris Teeter (a grocery store) and the lady waiting on me almost fainted. I asked her if she was ok – to which she replied “…there is a football player in the house…” I thought may be Bruce Smith stopped in. When she told me who it was I said he doesn’t play football. He is an ex-con who kills animals, etc. Why would you pick him as a role model. She could offer no explanation other than he was from the area. Lets see how she feels when her kids wind up in jail because they followed in the footsteps of her role model for similar crimes and learned to lying as part of their core values in life.
Anyway, my prediction is that the Eagles will regret this decision long term. To Micheal, the Eagles uniform will only hide who you really are for so long. In the end your true stripes will show through.

There are moronic fans from every city, they just aren’t publicized as much. And as for the Michael Vick signing, I am absolutely sick over it. Although he may be a competent player, his presence will surely bring trouble and lower the morale of the whole city. This decision was a despicable one to say the least! King Donko, I don’t know what type of sports fan you are, but any professional sports league is not like a regular job. How that makes me a jersey chaser by saying that, I really don’t know. I think your anger about the Vick signing is making you irrational, but athletes are paid for what they do on the field. Sure, the public is now caring about what these guys do off of the field, but TO isn’t making 6.5 million dollars because he’s a nice person. Face Stomper Albert Haynesworth isn’t signing a 100 million dollar contract because he’s going to be driving around people injured in car collisions. These guys are paid for what they can bring to the team, production wise, and how they can help their team win in order to generate revenue and win a Super Bowl.
You think the Washington Capitals were relevant in DC before they started winning games? People love winners. Go ask Boston Red Sox “fans” or Patriots “fans” about that. Do you watch football to watch nice men run around and hit each other, or do you watch football in order to be entertained?
How many musicians glorify drug use? How many songs that are classics were written/crafted duing heroin induced stoopers? These guys are entertainers. You won’t give a damn about them when their career is over in the average of six years and they walk around like cripples for the rest of their life, and neither will the league (why do you think the retired players are complaining?). The only thing the NFL cares about is if you can play, and when you can’t anymore, they get rid of you. It’s not a privilege to play in the league. That just goes to show how much you really know about football, calling it a privilege. If you’re not good, you’re not in the league.
Did you watch the first episode of Hard Knocks? When a player asked why he was getting cut, the personnel guy said, “Well, here we go by numbers and talent. You just weren’t good enough.”

You all know what Hitler and Stalin did, But PETA has unleashed the most God awful campaign against young children at McDonalds . They have made up Happy Meal boxes with Ronald McDonald holding a knife with blood dripping off of it and fake blood in the happy meal box. This bunch of psychos have traumatized many young children and all they can say is ” It is a good thing “/ I hate what Michael Vick did, But he went to jail, Paid his dues to society , Lost millions of dollars and is truly remorseful for his actions and he deserves to have the chance to work as any other American is allowed to do. PETA on the other hand has damaged the minds of thousands of children and they are not remorseful at all. Go figure .

I mean, on one hand you have this reprehensible turd who hurts dogs. On the other you have a howling horde of ignorant hypocrites and Eagles haters who think the people of Philly wanted Vick here because the FO signed him and say horrible things, feeling justified because of the unpopularity of Vick.
Vick isn’t a good man, but you know what? None of you are good people. You didn’t torture dogs, so you aren’t like him – congratulations. You’re a completely different breed of douchebags.

    Eagles to the Super Bowl.
Westbrook, McCoy, Jackson, Maclin, Curtis, Vick.

But not as bad as dog-torturing, interstate gambling, game-throwing Vick. You know, I always saw Pacman as a wanna be gangsta… Vick is a legit gangsta, complete with being immersed ears-deep in organized crime. Not just a felon, but a federal felon. He’s as unemployable as a man can be…radioactive… but then here come the desperate, win-at-any-price Eagirls!

Anyways, If this is what it takes to get rid of half assed fans and posers who just watch football so they wont be accused of being a brokeback mountain kind of guy then GREAT!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe we can get rid of another bunch of fake humans/fans when stallworth comes back next season….This is SOOOOOOOOO AWESOME. Love getting rid of you guys!!!!!! Please o please tell us more about how you are disgusted and wont be watching the NFL anymore…..It makes us HAPPY….Thats what you peta morons dont get. They should make a reality TV show out of you guys…..It’d be must see TV.

Right you are, but let me add in a little tidbit,
24 days jailtime for killing a human, 2 years jailtime for killing a dog.
The moral of the story you ask?
Kill more humans, do less jailtime, earn more money in the NFL.
Thanks PETA for clearing that up for us. I was starting to think a human life was worth more than a dogs life. Thank god you showed up and got us all straight.
    One question though,
How outraged would your family be if-
You, the peta employee was murdered by a man who also murdered a dog. Then, in court, the judge says, give the murderer 24 days for killing the peta employee(you) and 2 years for killing the dog.
    Wouldn’t that be rich?
No need to reply, you cant.

What kind of fanatics are you guys? Not very good ones….Anyways,
Why dont you and the other 24 guys go on a hunger strike too? Starve yourselves till theres nothing left and the world will be that much better off………

I have three loving Pitbulls and when I see the TV specials on what he did to the dogs there is only one way to help this asshole understand what he has done. An Eye for an Eye is so right in this case! I will be first in line to watch and lets get it on pay per view so we can raise money to help homeless animals have chance at a warm and healthly life. Maybe his brother will join him in the ring to so we get two for the price of one. My dogs are salivating as I write.

  212. porkey says: Aug 22, 2009 1:01 PM

I just don’t know when all the talk about Vick is going to end!!
I just don’t get it..he fights dogs and gets two years. Stallworth kills a human being and gets two months!! I haven’t heard of too many people being up in arms about him taking a human life. I guess it’s ok, as long as you pay off the family.
I have pit bulls of my own who are like my kids and would never dream of fighting them and I don’t condone anyone who mistreats animals!!
But enough is enough!! Everyone deserves a second chance!!
