Advantage, Sage

Multiple readers tell us that Vikings coach Brad Childress has told our pal Paul Allen, the radio play-by-play voice of the team whose touchdown calls are the stuff of legend (as is our ability to suck up), that a decision has been made regarding the starting quarterback for tonight’s preseason game at Indianapolis.

Sage Rosenfels will get the nod.

Childress previously has said that the two candidates for the starting job won’t split reps with the first team, but that one will get the first-team reps in each game.

Presumably, Tarvaris Jackson will start the second preseason game.  The third preseason game, in which starters typically play all of the first half and into the third quarter, likely will be significant to the ultimate question of who’ll start in Week One of the games that count.

who cares both these guys would be back ups at any other team! This idiot team should have signed Vick

  2. Big ben Rapistburger says: Aug 14, 2009 11:01 AM

I dont think Sage is starting the game because he is better, I think Sage is starting, because Major Dad was watching the EPIC collapse of the Texans last year against the Colts, engineered by Sage Rosenfels. One of the worst 2 quarters of football ever!!!!!!

Booty must be terrible if he isn’t considered at all with the guys in front of him.

  4. purpleguy says: Aug 14, 2009 11:08 AM

With the whole Colts starting secondary on the bench with injuries, he better complete a couple frigging passes.

how is that advantage sage?? so stupid. it gives him less time to get used to the system before being put i with the first team in front of an audience. Childress went out of his way to point out that it isn’t an advantage, they can only start one person. so dumb.

  8. ducej11 says: Aug 14, 2009 11:36 AM

Childress is starting Sage to make the front office happy. To show them that he is not playing favorites when Tavaras will really be the starter. Mark my typed words, Tavaras Jackson will be starting opening day.

  9. myasylum says: Aug 14, 2009 11:41 AM

I’m not so sure Farve is that far out of the picture yet either. This could all be a smoke screen anyway, who knows?

  10. ZN0rseman says: Aug 14, 2009 11:46 AM

I don’t like that setup at all.
Sage will be playing against a tough Colts defense, at the packed and noisy Indy stadium.
Then Jackson will get to start against a toothless and clueless Chiefs defense that couldn’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag.
That’s hardly a fair setup for Sage. My guess is that Childress is doing exactly the same thing he did with Bollinger and Ferrotte, in that he’s trying sell Jackson to the public again by setting him up to be successfull while setting up his competition to fail through questionable matchups and playcalling.

  12. Slim says: Aug 14, 2009 11:49 AM

Sage or Tavaris, Tavaris or Sage. If the Vikes are going to repeat as division champs, it will be on the backs of Adrian and the defense again.

  13. killachap says: Aug 14, 2009 12:03 PM

I think Tavaris should get the job. What exactly has Sage ever done? It is kind of like what the Texans have done with Schaub. For some reason they thought he was capable of starting after being a back up for his first few years. He hasn’t been consistent and Sage wont be either. I’d like to go out on a limb and say why not give John David Booty a shot too. He is the youngest and probably has the best chance to be a future leader.

Look it’s Dewey Axewound with another lame attempt at humor.
You must have got that joke from the 3 stooges, whose height in popualrity was the 1930’s.
You know a joke isn’t funny when you have to bracket it, to explain it.
Dewey, I can’t beleive you are actually still posting. How many times do you need to be bitchslapped by several posters before you go away?
By the way, why don’t tou have your team get a defense before you proclaim any advantages?
Seriously, you are the biggest glutton for punishment I have ever seen.
How does it feel to suck on here as bad as you suck at life?
I know I probably shouldn’t use the word suck, that will have you off on one of your homosexual tangents again. But, then again, you don’t need an excuse for that.
I’ll be waiting for your tried and true 5 point posting plan.

    Dear Adrian Peterson,
Please don’t get injured. Nobody can stop you. Not the packers not the bears not the lions. We will repeat if he watches his knees and stays healthy. If he doesn’t well then one of these 2 Qb’s better show me something new, or we could be in trouble. At least we don’t have packer-type problems. New defense, over paid RB, moronically stubborn owner and the inability to close out close games. Paul Allen is the greatest by the way

I don’t think that Major Dad has any othger way to go on this. I spent two days at summer camp in Mankato and Tjack couldn’t hit a receiver to save his soul. I think he’s a guy who needs to be concerned about even being a pro football player. One thing for sure, if the Queens don’t produce this year both Childress and Jackson should be sent packing.

  24. defensiveplaymaker says: Aug 14, 2009 12:48 PM

T-Joke will be the opening day starter I’m afraid. Childress has repeatedly hinged his fate with T-Joke. It all started when Childress drafted him in the 2nd round and gave up several picks to do so. Since then he keeps giving T-Joke chances and of course he keeps failing. This season will be no different. T-Joke will continue to hold this team back from what it could and should achieve with a decent qb. What a waste of one of the most talented running backs to ever play in the NFL (AP). Hopefully when Childress and T-Joke fail together this year we’ll get rid of them both…..get a decent coach and qb and then win the super bowl!

  25. SidHartman says: Aug 14, 2009 12:55 PM

    @ Big Ben
Your comment makes absolutely no sense. They want to start him BECAUSE of the collapse against the Colts?!? I’m speechless.
And to all you who think the Vikes should have signed Vick – he was never a good QB and 2 years away from the game isn’t going to help him.

  29. Big ben Rapistburger says: Aug 14, 2009 1:17 PM

Ok Sid Hartman, let me break it down for you:
Sage Rosenfels tore up the Colts last year, in the first half. And then he had an epic collapse in the second half, mostly a 10 minute span n the 4th.
So lets break it down further. In the preseason, a starting QB might play 1 half of football at the most.
Further breakdown, after Sage gives the Vikes the lead, he will get pulled from the game, and thus, wont be able to have an epic second half collapse (because T Jack will be in the game).
To go even further, if T Jack starts, and gives them a lead, Sage might revert back, and give it all back again……..
I am speechless……. I didnt think anyone was that dumb…..

Welcome to the show. Childress and Spielman are at odds over who should start. Spielman has been talking up Rosenfels, while Childress and some of the local media keep talking up Jackson. I’m hoping Childress has finally seen the light this time around, but whether he has remains to be seen.

The Viking haters need to start coming up with new material. Terms like Viqueens, Major Dad, and T-Joke are old and played out. It’s like calling Cutler a crybaby or a pussy, calling Packers a team that can’t live up to its teams of the past, or talking about the Lions losing season…They are all old. The Vikings offer more than enough shots to take each season, it should be easy to find something new.
To comment on the story: I think T-Jax and Sage will do good. Favre would’ve been nice to shove down the Packers throats, Cutler would’ve been horrible, and I don’t think Vick will have it anymore (not that he was ever that great of a QB). If you look at the projected NFC North starting QBs, yeah the Vikings appear to be the worst. But look at everything else on the team…RB, OL, DL, LB, S, WR…The Vikings are clearly better in every position than the Bear, Lions, and Packers. The QB for the Vikings does not need to be Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or even Donovan McNabb, they just have to step up, not throw INTs, and complete the occasional pass (20-27 per game). There is no way that Childress/Bevell are going to throw the ball 45 times a game. Not with Adrian Peterson, Chestor Taylor, and Percy Harvin. Even when Sage and T-Jax throw they will be throwing to Bernard, Bobby, Sidney, and Percy. I would also expect Jaymar and Glenn to contribute as well. Plus look at the TE’s, Shiancoe and Kleinsasser. The rest of the NFC North, whether they like the Vikings or not, have to admit that the Vikings are the team to beat….Like it or not.
Also, I don’t think JD Booty is going to get a legitimate chance until he steps up and learns the offense…

  36. Bob Nelson says: Aug 14, 2009 2:28 PM

    1) A Paul Allen touchdown call? That is a rather rare event. They had only 37 offensive TD’s last season which was less than the Miami Dolphins (who were 21st in scoring offense).
    2) How really bad is Sage Rosenfels if he cannot clearly be more successful than that failed QB Tarvaris Jackson?
    3) Jackson has never started more than 7 consecutive games in a season. How can anyone think much of a guy who can never get on the field?
    4) Never ever underestimate the vikings capacity for failure. As bad as their QB situation is now it can only get worse.

Sage will be the starter in the end, unless he’s injured. If Klink is doing the rotation thing, he’s setting up Sage to be the starter in the third game, which is the most important pre-season game.
Let the fans of the other NFC North teams trash the Vikes QBs, as for the most part they are right; however, the Vikes won the North with crappy QBs last year, while the cheesers and teddy bears are one hit away from playing backup QBs named Huey, Deuy and Luey.

ugh god not more of this horseshit. who has to let these retarded queens fans (and their organization) in on a little secret:
YOUR QB”S are both two of the WORST in the entire league…and youre trying to compare them to one of the hottest QB’s in the league, Aaron Rodgers.
Over 4,000 yards? The only other first time starter to EVER throw over 4,000 yards was Kurt Warner in his first season with the Rams.
    28 td’s
    12 INT’s

yes, this isn’t about Favre…but it shows you the situations the Rodgers was in last season…but you want to make it that he was simply 0-8 in comebacks…never mind its a team game.

  45. JimmySmith says: Aug 14, 2009 3:52 PM

Calm down folks, its the first pre season game so who starts this week or next week is insignficant compared to the offensive genius that is calling the plays.
Sage is a 7 year back up so one might think that in those 7 years, he would have flashed something to move up into the starting position. Since he didn’t, can anyone realistically expect him to do it this weekend? I mean, other than head in the clouds Viking fans?
The altertive is even worse. T Jack Off is wildly inaccurate, can’t read defenses and has trouble pronouncing simple words in the English lanague. And you want that douche being the face of your franchise? Didn’t think so.
No worries though, Col Klink has stopped by Dick’s Sporting Goods to buy a pair of knee pads and he is heading down to Mississipppi two weeks prior to the season opener.

Its obvious to me that sage will be the starting QB this season, after watching the game with the colts. Tjack can’t get his accuracy down on his passes. Some things never change! He doen’t look comfortable in the pocket like sage did. The defense looked awsome.

  51. footballrulz says: Aug 15, 2009 2:41 PM

Ragnar–Rodgers actually put the Pack ahead with nice drives in 3-4 of those games but unfortunately left 2 or 3 minutes on the clock. Too much time for that leaky defense to stop a scoring drive. That’ll change this year and this “can’t win a comeback” BS that everyone spouts about Rodgers will go away.
And like zangy I would also like to know the name of the “moronically stubbor owner of the Pack”. Obviously that guy doesn’t study football much.
